Off the the States again soon - I want to sort an ITIN number before I go - was in a position last year where I did deals to draw just below the $3k twice as I couldnt be arsed with the form filling in and waiting ages.

When I was at WSOP, I was told it was easy to get a number before you go from USA Embassy with forms....any advice please

Will take weeks to get one before you go.

Get ITIN number from Belagio next day! Alot easier.

All the info is here - http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96287,00.html

However, it has been suggested (by Matt674) that you cannot get an ITIN until you actually need it.

Maybe a phone call to the IRS dept at the US Embassy in London.

I agree with M3BOY.
I was in the Bellagio last year and cashed in a tournament.  The tournament director took my details and filled out the forms for me whilst I was still playing on the final table.  Got my ITIN number the next day and the official paperwork was mailed to the UK.
Couldn't be easier.

You can apply for an ITIN at any time..however if you are going to be in Vegas I'd recommend the Bellagio route mentioned by previous posters as the other method takes ages and can involve sending in your passport (copies not accepted) if you apply by post or making a personal journey to the IRS desk at the US Embassy which is longwinded.

I'm sure it is... but I assume you first have to enter a tournament at Bellagio AND then get deep enough into the money that you would need the ITIN?

...a chat with the cardroom supervisor and maybe a little sweetener should get you one even without being deep in one of their tournies..

If the history of the Binion family is anything to go by, compliance with tax rules isn't too high on their list of priorities.
