Okay let me give you the full story behind this poll. I am a regular at Luton. I love the people, enjoyed the standard of play and generally have received an education to live play as good as anywhere in the country. What happened on Tuesday night left me shaking my head in despair and wondering even though it is now the most beautiful cardroom I should now go and make somewhere else my home.
I arrived at 7.15pm for what I believed was an 8.30pm start. I had just been to parents evening and was in a state of euphoria after being told how well they were doing. It was every parents dream evening and one I never got close to giving my own parents.
I walked in the door and the usual "Hi Phil" welcome as I walked towards the door into the casino. I like the girls on the front desk and always try and stop and have a natter but they looked busy so I didn't bother. As I opened the door to the casino as I was called back. "Phil your shoes are not acceptable". I explained that they were not a trainer but a fashion shoe. Unfortunately they were not for moving. I asked to speak to a manager. The manager came and reinforced that they were training shoes. I did not make a big fuss at this point. Okay I thought I will go home (a round trip of over 30 miles) change my shoes and come back. So that is what I did re-entering the casino at 8.15pm. Unfortunately unknown to me the tournament was due to start at 8.00pm.
On the previous Thursday I was invited to the opening night. I had a lovely evening except for one thing. A very well dressed man in a suit and "proper" shoes had drunk too much and had to be removed from the casino very loudly and forcibly. I was in the same shoes that I wore on Tuesday
So the question is this. Are they trainers and does it matter?
By the way I do not blame the girls on the door they were just doing what they had been asked. Maybe the manager could have warned me. However you look at it the way it has been handled cost them because I did not eat in the restaurant and I did not play in the cardroom and right now I am not sure I will. Mind you every cloud has a silver lining. I did make $700 on Blonde Poker League.

1) They look more like trainers than 'fashion shoes' (whatever they are). And that ragged white sticker on the back is hideous. In fact the whole white sticker/suede toecap/leather upper combination is a bit of a mess. 'Fashion' is not a word which should be used anywhere near these shoes. Smiley

2) They shouldn't have stopped you from coming in, though. A simple 'those shoes do not comply with our dress code - we'll let it go today but remember for the future' would have sufficed. The staff were being a bit jobsworthy, especially as you weren't just some tramp off the street, but known to the staff.

It's a tough call, but I'm afraid that I would have to say they look like trainers to my not-at-all-fashion-conscious eyes

Wise old monkey once told me: "If in doubt put an extra pair in boot before you set off" Wink

I've done it many a time with shirts and shoes when wearing something that may cause objection thumbs up

Phil,

Went up there last night to play the £20 rebuy (nice £5k guaranteed), and there were several people behind me in trainers. Straight away they were told the "no trainers" rule. They kicked up a bit of a fuss but in the end accepted the ruling.

So I wait in line at the reception desk to register my details (first time at the new place), get inside and spot several people wearing what appeared to be trainers. Walk past them for a closer look, and yup, definately trainers. Not sure how they made it past the "trainer police"?

I would have thought with you being a regular at the old place, they would've let you in.

I'd give them another chance; the cardroom is the best UK live venue I've been to. Sectioned off from the gaming floor and very spacious. Come up tonight for the £75 freezout mate.

I was going to say, the rule is 'no trainers' isn't it?  Does it state you have to wear shoes at all?  Could you not have taken them off, put them in the cloakroom, and wandered in barefoot?

Bern has shoes that look like trainers or bowling shoes depending on your slant on these things. I know he's got a good chance of being turned away too, and they're not trainers - they are shoes from Tesco's. He's hasn't got a pair of trainers - why would he - he never does any exercise!

Phil - you should have looked at the manager and said to him "Does it look like I do any training?". That would have stumped him!

Great perf on The Open by the way - best person on the panel imho.
