Spilt drink over laptop, please help
«
on:
March 24, 2007, 10:25:20 AM »
Ive just knocked a cup of tea over my laptop(well 1/2 a cup) and it wont turn on. I mopped up the visible tea straight away and turned it over. Ive placed it in the utility room to dry.
Is it beyond salvage or will it just need a day to dry out. Im useless a techy things so if i need to take it apart you will have to talk in lamen terms.
Thanks in advance for any advice given

There is a chance that when it has dried out it will still work but usually liquid spillages do damage the motherboard. I once did a similar thing to a Sony Vaio and was able to get it up and running again, however the hard drive was damaged and had to be replaced and I also had to fit a new keyboard. I left it alone for 48 hours before trying to reboot it and was pleasantly surprised to see it boot.

Leave it 24 hours and give it a go. I reckon your chances are similar to 72o vs AA preflop but sometimes you get lucky....
I did the same last year and claimed on the household insurance. I had to send the laptop to them first as they wanted to to try and fix it (300ml of Coke - I think not...). So they offered to replace it with a £250 Acer. 7 phone calls, 2 improved and rejected offers and 10 days later, I had a PC World voucher for £850 to spend.

Put it in your airing cupboard. Which model is it. If your not insured let me know. I can have our repair centre look at it for you. I will need to know asap as I go on holiday on Monday.

Take the battery out now if you haven't already.

Also, you might want to unscrew bits that come apart. You can remove the keyboard, hard drives, CD drives, etc. This gives it a better chance to dry out properly. Don't unplug any wires that you might forget how to plug them back in again, but anything that's obvious you're probably best to take it apart so you can get to the insides with a tissue and then let it dry over 24 hours or so.
If you use a hairdryer to dry it, make sure it's on a cold setting - otherwise you might melt some bis you shouldn't.

Do you have to turn it over half-way through?

I did this. Spilt 2 litres of lemonade on my Sony Vaio.
It would turn on but the screen went all fuzzy straight away. The guy at the shop said it was cream crackered and needed a new motherboard.
So i just got a new laptop, coz i wanted the latest model anyway, but a month later i turned it on and its been absolutely fine ever since.
So now i jus use one for poker and one for tv/music.

Did it have sugar in ?
Increases your chances from 7/2 off against AA to 9/10 suited if no sugar.
Remove parts you can and airing cupboard - a little time and a little luck and you never know.
