Quick question
My mother just got out of hospital so I drove to where she lives, got a bunch of flowers but by the time I got to her house she had gone for a nap because of the anaesthetic
what i want to know is how long can flowers last before they need water? I dont want to put unpackage them into a vase unless its completely necessary because she likes to do that.
Thanks

Pop em, still in their packaging, in the kitchen sink if you can.

Just lay them in the sink with the bottom of them in water. No need to unpack them.

If you need to use the kitchen sink, place the stalks in a small plastic bag which is about 1/4 full of water and seal. This usually allows you to keep the bouquet together and still stand it up in a safe place.
If they gave you some of that flower feed powder stuff you can put this into the water also. If no flower feed, add a coupla teaspoons of sugar tends to help.
A wee tip from the Sarge's Grandma.

When it was mothers day i kept the flowers in the boot of my car overnight and they were fine in the morning, still lasting now 4 weeks later.

Stick 'em in water an add some sugar and some asprin or vinegar (or other acid).
The low ph value helps to prevent bacteria and fungal growth in the flower stems (these can clog the stems and prevent water being drawn up by the flowers), and the sugar will provide some food for the flowers (now that they can no longer photosynthesise enough energy since they've been cut from the rest of the plant).
