After dropping my older children off at school today I noticed a beautiful little dog running along the road.  I asked some passing kids if they knew who owned him. They did, and as it happens he lives just down the road to me.  As I was fashionably dressed in my jim jams and dressing gown the kindly kids caught him for me so I could take him home.  He was so loving and friendly, I think I’m in love… Anyway I took him back and was approached by a neighbour who said the owner let him roam free most of the time.  I witnessed that he had no road sense and he often follows the children to school apparently (some 30 min walk).  This is not responsible dog ownership and I am appalled that people who profess to love their animals can act like this.  I think he would love it here with my family, as he obviously loves kids and hopefully other animals.  My question is this: if a dog is used to being allowed to roam free, how likely is it that he would readjust to being housed.  I have a regular visitor in a dog from a local stables.  He comes here to eat and nap (and a brush with the flea comb) but after a few hours wants to leave.  He would not be happy to be confined, but has good road sense and is looked after.  If it isn’t obvious I’m thinking of approaching the owner and asking if I can buy him.  But I wouldn’t want him to be unhappy…

He would not be unhappy, especially if you find him something to do.

He will always be prone to roaming if he gets the chance, neutering will help.

we have a bit of a similar situation at the mo. We have always had a dog in our house and we have a sheepdog (patch) who is 14, she is lovely but we have also adopted my nans dog is is a lot younger and a proper working sheepdog (ben). He adapted very well and apart from the odd jailbreak he has settled excellently now and trust him to stay within the confines of the grounds but we also now have a farmdog. On the farm, he belonged to my great uncle who passed away just over a year ago now and since the dog (sammy/sam/sambo) has remained on the farm, even though noone now lives there. A month ago a bitch went on heat in the area an he kept on running off after her, to which the on heat bitches owner wasnt too happy as it was a pedigree bull mastiff and would ruin her if sam did what he wanted to her so he had to be kept in in the farm buildings. But me and my mum, being as soft as **** with dogs ddnt want him to be inside all day so we brought him down to us and so he has lived for the past 4 weeks all happy and content. But he couldnt stay down here so when we thought the bich was no longer in heat off he went backup the farm but now he has started wandering down to my nans house (which is between my house and the farm) and lodging there. He wanders off all the time and is soft as muck to people so we dont quite know hat to do with him as he is in truth a little simple and set in his ways and couldnt be trained to stay in one place now.

But zelda if the dog is young/clever enough and you provide enough reason/love/FOOD for him to stay with you, he should adust quite happily!

I'm sure as had been said if you care for him and give him attention he would be very happy.

We got Max to replace our old boxer Rufus who had died and to keep our other boxer Zelda (yep honest) company, always seems to be more fun with two. Anyway we went to a boxer rescuer and found Max who had been in two homes previously so we asked what was the problem that 2 households would want to give up such a lovely beast. The first had a couple of children and the mother had got pregnant and they felt the dog was too much work. Which is fair enough i suppose you can understand that they wouldn't want him to be neglected and therefore give him the chance of another family who could give him the time he needed. The second person was a lady who brought him back as "he barked at cats and jumped up at the window" a dog that barked at cats   obviously a design fault?

Well we don't mind a dog that wants to bark at cats so Max came home with us he was about 18 months old at the time. That was in 1998 and since then we have never had a bit of bother other than a few odd smells that boxers can be partial to making. He hardly even barks at cats and never jumped at windows. When we had our daughter 5 years ago we obviously wondered how the 2 boxers would react to a new member of the household and that they wouldn't have all our attention in future. Well we need not have been concerned the pair of them have been fantatstic with her. Max never blinked an eye with Samantha crawling over him when she was smaller and they both have been found to have moved to sleeping next to her bed instead of ours.

Max was always a very boisterous dog, first to greet you at the door boundless energy would walk for days and chase anything you let him. So when last week he wasn't interested in getting out his bed and was reluctant to go for a walk we were concerned. He even growled when we tried to get him out so we knew something was wrong, max wouldn't even growl at other dogs. We took him to the vet who said he had an eye infection which may be causing some pain in his head, give him these eye drops and anti-biotics and bring him back if it gets worse. Needless to say we were back fairly shortly as he became more reluctant to do anything and very lethargic. This time it was the vet's kept him in for the night to observe him and in the morning we were told to take max to Glasgow to the veterinary school where they could perform MRI scans etc should they think it is required.

We had a conversation with the surgeon, a very nice Spanish vet who spent a lot of time going though his symptoms and what the possible diagnosis could be. It could be trouble with his spinal column as he seemed to be nursing his back a bit but also there was the possibility it could be a tumour in his brain as he was showing signs of being uncoordinated and confused. We got the results on Tuesday which confirmed our worst thoughts but what we both had probably knew the day before that max had a tumour in his brain and another in his neck. These tumours were inoperable and the only possibility was for chemotherapy. We have seen a dog going through this next to Debbie's parents house and it wasn't what we wished for max. He was obviously in a great deal of pain and the neurosurgeon asked what we wanted to do. I was working in an open plan department that morning and the staff must have wondered why that guy who is always giving them a hard time about staff levels and amounts of overtime was crying like a little girl.

Max went to sleep on Tuesday morning and didn't wake up, I miss him.

I am so sorry for your loss.  Thankyou for sharing.  He was lucky that you found him...  I hope you enjoy this poem:

I’ve changed my ways a little; I cannot now Run with you in
the evenings along the shore, Except in a kind of dream; and
you, If you dream a moment, You see me there.

So leave awhile the paw-marks on the front door Where I used
to scratch to go out or in, And you’d soon open; leave on
the kitchen floor The marks of my drinking-pan.

I cannot lie by your fire as I used to do On the warm stone,
Nor at the foot of your bed; no, All the nights through I
lie alone.

But your kind thought has laid me less than six feet Outside
your window where firelight so often plays, And where you
sit to read– And I fear often grieving for me– Every night
your lamplight lies on my place.

You, man and woman, live so long, it is hard To think of you
ever dying. A little dog would get tired, living so long. I
hope that when you are lying Under the ground like me your
lives will appear As good and joyful as mine. No, dears,
that’s too much hope: You are not so well cared for as I
have been. And never have known the passionate undivided
Fidelities that I knew. Your minds are perhaps too active,
too many-sided... But to me you were true.

You were never masters, but friends. I was your friend.
I loved you well, and was loved. Deep love endures
To the end and far past the end. If this is my end,
I am not lonely. I am not afraid. I am still yours.

Sorry to hear this Eck,

At BB4, RED-DOG and I discussed similar events that had happened to ourselves over the years concerning pet dogs we had.

Eck, I'm so sorry. But you did the right thing.

I had the same decision with Charlie (my old Tabby cat) & though I miss her terribly, I know I did the right thing.

We do get so much pleasure out of our pets, so we owe it to them to do right by them in their moment of need. If that means putting them to sleep, so be it, it has to be done. Keeping a pet alive when it is suffering, & has little chance of recovery, is selfish & cruel.

It always annoys and saddens me when I see dogs running around the streets.  Two places near where I live seem to always have dogs running around without their owners.  It is so sad to see dogs near roads,  I sacked my first driving instructor after getting into an argument after I swerved to avoid a Lab cross running in front of the car, he said I should of kept driving. No chance, I would rather hit a fence than a dog.  People who allow their dogs to  run loose should be fined and banned from keeping animals

Eck

I've never had a pet in my life (parents never allowed one when I was a kid) so I understand less than most people about how pets become part of the family.

However, even someone in my situation can understand your emotions after reading a post like that.  Sorry to hear about your loss.

I think you should print a copy of your post and put it somewhere safe.  In years to come, when the short-term grief has gone, I think it will be a fantastic thing for you to pick up and read as the memories you expressed are so fresh in it.  A fitting epitaph for an obviously much-loved family member.
