Exactly what is says on the tin, recommend me a car for around the £4,000 mark, fuel economy being a priority as I cover a lot of miles... Cheers...

It'd probably be a diesel then if fuel economy is a major concern.

What size car are you after?  Any other considerations?

A small car is fine, no kids, just the girlfriend every now and then... Not fussy on colour/make etc. Just after some ideas as I need to get a new 1 before the football season starts in mid-july... Have a Zetec fiesta at the mo, jus fancy somethin a bit newer...

Not a diesel, but an ultra-reliable small car with decent petrol consumption, that also looks pretty good (IMHO) is the Toyota Yaris.

Have a look here:

http://www.buyyourcar.co.uk/Used-Car/Toyota/Yaris/Page-1/Size-10/LPrice-3000/HPrice-4000/SellerType-PT/Sort-HIGHPRICE.aspx

Is that the sort of thing you're after?

For MPG I dont think you could beat the VW deisels. My pd130 Passat has superb fuel economy. 50-60MPG on the motorway and 40MPG around town. It is a spacious car and moves quick as well....

I've got a scratched up old Honda accord to get rid of in a couple of months.  Less than £4k too Smiley

I saw the thread and was just gonna pot audi, they dont rust, ultra reliable and people dont hate you when you undertake them on the motorway!!!

BUT i see petrol consumption is a priority. I dont know how much much a turbo diesel Audi A3 would be but will look now!

the only problem with buying a second hand 4K german car is that you get decent car for you rmoney, but the servicing and running costs are still going to be on the steep side (especially the diesels). Eg - probably best part of 90 quid for a tyre for a passat.

I would go for something japanese.honda civic diesel, nissan almera diesel etc.

Depends on what you want.

I rather like

http://www.usedcartrader.co.uk/carsforsale/Lancashire/PEUGEOT/206/1082843.html

But then I like the french diesels.  The interior can be a bit plasticy, but fun to drive.

Also SEAT / Skoda  diesels are good value.

But if you want something easy to look after.

The Vauxhaul Astra 1.7 Diesel is good steady stuff.

( The 2.0 HDi is fun tho )

Yeh servicing is ridiculous it is on my audi but very very rarely does anything go wrong with them but mines a petrol not a diesel so icant comment on their reliability. The only thing is a suspension change after 100k which is a bit steep but the engine just runs and runs and the paint job looks like new! They are perfect for long distance which in my opinion jap cars are not. Not coz of reliability but are not the comfy cruisers the jerry cars are!

well im looking for a new car too now, some ***** smashed into me on thursday and have just heard from insurance that it is written off.

I had a peugeot 306 1.9 TD meridian -  great car, alloys, leather seats, air con etc, no problems, had only done 46k miles, 50MPG+  that was £3000 about 9 months ago.  Cry Cry

The newer 306 Hdi models have even better consumption. My Dads last peugeot diesel has done over 180k miles with no major problems at all
