............. That the Sgt Pepper album was released. One of the greatest albums ever and still stands the test of time. Got me thinking, what is your all time favourite album?

My personal favourite is The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. For me it was the whole show based around the album and the incredible lyrics, especially for the opening track Five Years that helped make this album so good.

A Day in the Life is arguably the best Beatles song.

Thought this was going to be MickyP's birthday thread.

Good Choice Rich if i was your age would probably agree. But seeing as i grew up listening to the 2 greatest bands ever in the Beatles and Led Zeppelin it would have to be one of their's but can't be arsed choosing as i'd change my mind in 5 minutes.

Anyway need to get back to work, knocking off early for 5pm flight beginning to taste the guinness already

Yes, SPLHCB was defining of an era, I still play it regularly, have 6 or 8 versions, & I could never tire of it.

"The one & only lonely hearts club band". So simple, so good, those boys were special. I don't go for cryptic lyrics, who of our generation could not associate with "I wanna hold your hand" or "She loves you", "She's leaving home" & so many more. It says something when the Band deemed the best of the late 90's - Oasis - were no more than a Beatles Tribute Band.

Ziggy Stardust was another defining album as was some of the Roxy Music early stuff. And Maggie May, by Rod Stewart - what a great, & prolific songwriter he was, too.

We had Pirate radio in those days (pre Radio 1) - ships broadcasting from just off Clacton & Frinton, in Essex - & bands such as The Hollies, Yardbirds (some talent in THAT group), The Animals, Stones, Freddie & the Dreamers, Gerry & the Pacemakers, even Cilla was a pop star then. The golden age of pop, for sure.

The Pirate Stations started it all really. Radio London gave better reception - "Wonderful Radio Londonnnnnnn", but Caroline was good too - "Caroline, sound of the nation, Caroline, sound of the land". Before that it was only Radio Luxembourg, "208", with awful reception, funded almost entirely by adverts by Horace Batchelor, who sold football pools tipping systems. The most memorable ads ever, so good that 40+ years on, I can still remember his address, the ads were that clever. "Horace Batcherlor, Keynsham - that's K-E-Y-N-S-H-A-M - near Bristol". Jimmy Saville was the Star , he did the Teen & Twenty Disc Club - "TTDC".

As the decades moved on, so the supergroups arrived, & attending their gigs was magic. Fleetwood Mac, TenCC, Genesis, Yes, Dire Straits, ELP, ELO, Queen. I'd not swap those memoroies, or that music, for anything.

Nobody - NOBODY - actually liked Cilla or her songs - "Anyone who had a heart - boom boom", but she was popular because her PR peeps put it around that she was pally with the Fab Four, & that was good enough.

PS - I land Dublin 8.50 tonight - what time you arrive?

Rage against the Machine by Rage Against the Machine, loved it when I first discovered it, and it has never worn off. And I don't normally go for that heavy stuff.

Fantastic post TK.

My wife was a huge Bryan Ferry fan and the family dog that we had for 18 years was named Roxy. Pure sounds generated by fantastic musicians and then mixed  together, unlike so much of the purely computer generated nonsense we often hear today.

Radio Luxemburg (208) what memories that brings back, a couple of us soldiers then, set up on HF to receive a better reception. The memories of raising and lowering the wire antenna without the barrack guard catching us.
