It's come out today that Chelsea are after Daniel Alves who is a long time Liverpool target. It sparked a conversation between myself and a friend who is a Man U fan, and his missus (Arsenal fan) about Chelsea's transfer policy. It made for an interesting argument....
These are the players who clubs have been interested in or been close to buying before Chelsea came in...
Liverpool:
Alves
Simao
Joquin
Torres
Villa
Duff
Man U:
Ballack
Mikel (actually signed for Man U)
Essien
Robben
Makelele
Arsenal:
Diarra
Wright-Phillips
Not to mention the Cole/Gallas saga.
This doesn't include players these cubs have signed who Chelsea tried to get at the last minute:
Rooney
Walcott
Is there an element of buying players that you don't want other teams to have? I mean with the money available, why not?

Lots of Liverpool fans are worried that we haven't been linked with any big name signings yet - and that it doesn't appear we're close to securing any of them. I guess this could quite well be the Liverpool board being tight-lipped about who we're after for once and we might only know after the deal's been done.
As for chelsea signing up players to stop others getting them - yes, that's definitely what they've done on a number of occasions. SWP must be the most obvious example.

I think they buy them to stop others getting them, like mentioned SWP is the classic example. Not so sure they are doing it much now though. I think RA has realised that it doesn't matter how much he spends he isn't guaranteed everything in one season and after spending close to £600m is trying to cut back a bit.

I have had this conversation with a Liverpool fan at work and im not sure if they buy players to stop other teams from having them I just think Mourinho and his scouting staff arent the best in the transfer market. They look at what other big clubs are doing in the transfer market and then just come up with a bigger offer.
I mean look at some of the players that Mourinho has bought in Belarouz, Del Horno, Kalou, Kezman??(or was he already there?) Ferriera is not 1st choice anymore.
All of mourinho's best players are the ones that were already there or the ones that they have come in for after another club has made an offer.
I now see that they are interested in Maluda who has been linked quite strongly to liverpool and a bit to Arsenal.

of the players you stated dan belarouz was bought as a stop gap, del horno and ferriara are both first choice internationals who struggled to adapt to the premiership (hard to see that when buying,better players than those to have failed) kezman was a mistake, a profilic lower league scorer but couldn't hack the bigtime.
i wouldn't include kalou just yet, hes young and very raw with a huge amount of potential.
what about cahalvo? hardly a failure
jon obi mikel? this guys gonna be some player believe me.(and before anyone says we nicked him from man u it was actually them that hijacked chelsea on the transfer and took advantage of a loophole to cash in on the deal)

Our work in the transfer market has been shocking over the past decade or so. Far too many times have we gone after a target and failed. Hopefully though that'll change with the increased spending power and a different board structure. As for chelsea, they've signed some cracking players. But it could be argued that they've gone for the shot-gun approach rather than that of a sniper with his rifle. |

I agree - Liverpool's approach in the transfer market has been awful. Two reasons, our clubs set up and money. We made two offers for Alves at the price being asked and both times it got upped by Seville until we couldn't afford it. Chelsea would never have that problem. As Kinboshi says hopefully now that will change. |
