For some reason I can't access certain sites from my laptop but my main pc works fine.  They both use the same internet connection.   It's nothing special, but sites like moneysavingexpert and kiva.org, I can't get on (would like to get on these two right now) but can't

any ideas?

I've checked the firewall and it seems ok, perhaps I'll recheck.

Do you get the same results in a different broswer, eg firefox? (Assuming you're using IE atm).

Do you happen to have peerguardian installed? Or some anti-virus software, or something else that could be blocking the sites.

I don't have much installed on my lappy at all, that's why I can't understand it.  My main pc has all that stuff on it and I don't get any problems.  My lappy is pretty much just for poker and surfing.  I'll recheck my antivirus and firewall settings and see if there's something there.

It could be a temporary ISP-related issue.

Could you try something?  Go to google and search for moneysavingexpert, and click on the 'cached' link.  Can you see the site from there?

Didn't work.   Also tried turning off firewall and AV but it didn't work with them switched off so I guess it's related to their settings.  It's in IE and Firefox so browser settings are unlikely, what does that leave?  I guess only the connection itself.  Can wireless connections cause problems like this?  It's just wierd that it's not all sites, it's only a few (2 so far that I know of)

(Assuming Windows XP)

From your laptop:

Click Start > Run > cmd > OK
Type 'tracert www.kiva.org'

To be able to paste the results here, click the icon in the top left corner of the cmd window. Choose Edit > Mark. Use your mouse to highlight all of the text. Then press Enter. That's the copy done - now paste it in a reply.

Is your desktop PC connected via ethernet cable? Can you try your laptop connected via that?

Results
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Graham>tracert www.kiva.org

Tracing route to www.kiva.org [64.207.133.194]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1     1 ms     1 ms     1 ms  192.168.1.1
  2     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  3     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  4     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  5     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  6     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  7     *        *

I could plug the ethernet cable to see if that works I guess, but I may have to change a few settings over wouldn't I?  I think that could be more of a tomorrow morning job rather than a late night one Cheesy

Tracing route to www.kiva.org [64.207.133.194]

OK, DNS is working i.e. your laptop knows where www.kiva.org is supposed to be found.

  1     1 ms     1 ms     1 ms  192.168.1.1
  2     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  3     *        *        *     Request timed out.

But once it gets to 192.168.1.1 (which I'm guessing is your router) it doesn't go any further.

Another copy-and-paste please - follow the same instructions before to get the cmd window then type 'ipconfig /all'.
