Outlane
Outlane, happy memories Maureen! I had a girlfriend there once, buxom lass.
I did a lot of civil engineering work in that part of the world, & when heading North on the M1, I'd "cut across" from Denby Dale (J38 or J39) up through some beautifuly scenic wibbly wobbly roads, & emerge into Huddersfield, then up the hill to the M62. I originally thought "Outlane" was a route direction sign!
I did a job - an Underground Service Reservoir (underground, on top of a bleak moor, bizarre), for a an old-fashioned Builder from Cleckheaton - lovely Yorkshire ring to that, "Cleckheaton", also home to BBA, who used to make Feredo Brake & Clutch Linings. The Service Reservoir was in a remote hillside moor location, & impossible to find. It was in Slaithwaite, so I'd ask the way, & the locals would look at me like I was mad. "Slaithwaite, no such place!" So I'd show them the address on piece of paper, & they'd say, "ahh me 'ol lad, thaa means Slawaa". And so I did - they pronounced it Slawaa. There was also nearby Linthwaite - "Linwaa" apparently!
I did another job on the old "A" road from Halifax across the Pennines - A58 I think - at a place by the somewhat unikely name of Blubberhouses. The Company was Blubberhouses Silica Sand Company. What?! Some lucky moor farmer found himself satting on the largest Silica sand deposits in the UK, they use it to make glass. So they spent £12 milion building this enormous quarrying facility to extract & process the silica sand. But they forgot 1 thing - adequate water supply, which proved impossible to organise. It's tough to get large quantities of water to the top of a hill......anyway, it never produced a grain of processed silica sand, & lay redundant the last I heard.
