Poker is obviously becoming more and more mainstream and 'fashionable'. A friend of mine forwarded a marketing-related article to me, as he knows that I'm interested in poker. I guess the author of the piece wanted to hook the reader with the poker reference. Unfortunately, he got it wrong, his maths very, very wrong. In a recent televised poker tournament, Dave 'Devilfish' Ulliott went all in with a hand of ace-king against a seven-five held by reigning champion Phil Hellmuth. He was 97 per cent favourite to win - until the flop came out three-four-six. Hellmuth took the pot and Devilfish lost his confidence.
Royal Mail must sometimes have that feeling. On the upside, it has returned to profit, albeit limited. From missing all its quality of service targets two years ago, this year it will meet or exceed 11 out of 12. Prices have been rising in real terms for the past three years, generating increased revenues.
The downside is that profits have dived in the first half of the financial year,...
