A nice piece about Rob Yong, & Eastwood Town in todays "Times". Eastwood are away to Kettering in the FA Cup.

Here's the piece. The pic is after their previous FA Cup victory. Here's hoping he looks as happy tonight. I think he will.

The two pupils of Ellis Guilford School in Nottingham shared a classroom and played in the school football team. Yet their dreams were different. Paul Cox wanted to become a professional footballer; Rob Yong wanted to become a millionaire.

In the pre-Premier League days of the Eighties that meant going their separate ways, although Cox recalls that Yong was “a tricky left winger with a nifty left foot”. Cox became a defender with Notts County, Yong embarked on business ventures that, combined with a love of gambling, found their most flamboyant expression in Dusk Till Dawn, Europe's biggest poker club, and dtdpoker.com, the website.

Now they are united again as the manager and chairman of Eastwood Town, the UniBond League club who continue their remarkable FA Cup venture by travelling to Kettering Town, of the Blue Square Premier, in the all non-League third-round tie on Saturday: two 36-year-olds whose friendship holds firm despite the balance of their working relationship.

“When I heard that Rob was interested in becoming involved in football, I took him on a tour of local clubs,” Cox said. “Fortunately, he chose Eastwood. He is a quick learner. Yes, he's put in some money that enables us to have a little bit of clout to compete with clubs at this level, but it's as much that he has brought energy and complete commitment to Eastwood Town.”

Cox, in turn, has had to learn the rudiments of poker to satisfy television crews setting up features at the club. “I'm not a gambling man,” Cox said. “I find it hard to part with the pennies that I have earned like that.”

The manager, in charge since October 2006, now earns his precious livelihood full time from Eastwood, at the behest of Yong, who took over as chairman in October 2007. “It wasn't an easy decision to make,” Cox said. “I had studied hard to become a schoolteacher and really enjoyed it but in the same way that I wanted to go as far as I could as footballer, I want to go as far as I can as a manager.”

Eastwood, beaten by Gateshead in the play-offs semi-final last season, lie second in the table in a pursuit of a place in Blue Square North. They are enjoying a 14-match unbeaten run, while Kettering have slipped to tenth in the the Blue Square Premier after a flying start to the season.
