Dublin was absolutely freezing yesterday, everywhere was flooded, & the torrential rain continued long into the night.

I was curious about the Poker Comp Venue, which is also our Hotel,  - "Ballsbridge Inn", as I've made 30 or 40 poker forays to Dublin down the years, but had never heard of it.

Upon rrival, I realised that most of us know it as Jurys Inn, where the Irish Open used to be held. I recall coming here in '05, or '06, Rob Yong played beautifully, coming up just short, Chili ran deep but tried to make a move on Mickey Wernick, she might as well have played her hand face up.

Anyway, the word at the time was that the Hotel was about to close, Dermot had decided to demolish it & build luxury apartments. It's in a nice part of town, right opposite the US Embassy.

I suppose the Credit Crunch scuppered that, as it's still an Hotel (an Hotel, see?), but nowadays it's a " Hotel", "Ballsbridge Inn", not a Jurys Inn.

It needs to be demolished, & fast, the place is in a dreadful state. Every corridor has buckets here & there to catch dripping water, as do lots of the rooms, & even the Coffee Bar has 5 large buckets on drip-catch duty. Given that the Coffee Bar is on the Ground Floor, & it's an 8 storey Hotel, that's impressive. The whole Hotel smells musty, & feels damp. It cannot possibly remain open to the public much longer. A nailed on candidate for a mysterious "total-loss" fire if ever I saw one.

Many of the rooms are "not in use", the doors being barred by a hasp & staple with padlock (!).

However, every cloud.,........

In the well-treed Car Park there is  splendid array & variety of mature trees, headlined by this beauty, a rare sight indeed in a City Centre, surely - a Californian Redwood.

A sign on the tree says it has "red wood, hence it's name". Fancy that.

Very fine tree indeed.

Affixed to that tree, is this sign, which is, in itself, a grammatical curiosity in several ways, notably.....

"the thick, almost inflammable bark".

"almost inflammable"?, but meaning, according to the sign, "almost does not burn".  I'm confused. I like oddities though.

Well done Chilli and Ralph. Dreadfull state of that hotel Tikay. The pic is the roof of St.Stephens Green shopping centre, marvelous when the sun is shinning brightly through.

how does it mean 'almost does not burn'? almost inflamable means 'almost does burn' which makes sense in context even if it is written very clunkily

Obv. a typo, should have been unflammable.

PS This is in Ireland.

I thought it was.

It is a very nice looking little shopping centre.

Not very interesting shops though.

I shall be writing a stiff letter to the guy at Sky Poker who recommends where the crew stay, trust me. He's tez. Not sure if I should address it to tikay, or the more formal "Mr Kendall".

Very nice pic, thank you.

Lol, behave. How can something that does not burn be described as "will almost burn"?

OK, I'll find you a better example. Today, I am argumentative & tetchy. It's morning, & I don't do mornings.

The Hotel Car Park. Signwriting by Ironside. Interesting upper case usage.

On the upside, the Hotel has a Massage Parlour.

It's named "Blow".
