Flight Lieutenant Ted Nestor, from Stockport, Greater Manchester, was shot down over Germany in 1943, and held at the prisoner of war camp immortalised in the film The Great Escape.

Amazing diary.

Thanks Kev, I'll reply to that soonest.

I jus re-re a book that Tom gave me, "The Train Man" I think it was called, about a Scottish Soldier who was a POW in Burma during WWII. Unbelievable.

Was it this one, I read it years ago, a very fine memoir.

That's the very one. Now that WAS a bad-beat story.

Great book,he was captured a few days after arriving in Singapore, straight after training iirc and his story is fascinating.

Yes, & he was a Train Geek. And ended up helping to build the Burma Railroad, which killed so many in such dreadful ways. Oh the irony.

Later, 40 years on, he returned to Japan to meet his tormentor-in-chief, & they spent much time together, healing wounds.

Breathtakingly painful & wonderful, all in one book.

I could not put it down - I read the whole thing in a day! Then re-read it, to better absorb it.

Sounds a great read.  If you were to suggest your top 10 books, what would they be?
