found his reasoning for not putting the D on the end of shitface, nothing to do with hyphens

Quote
One might expect a student of Mr Hurst's abilities to have spotted the remaining D, which can be added to the end of the word to form a concept most undergraduates are familiar with. "I did see that," he said, "but I knew I couldn't put it on the end. Shitface is a noun not an adjective."

Don't worry Claire I thought I may have copied you when I looked at the funny clips. Didn't check the times so I don't know who got there first.

I'm happy to call it a draw.

Sorry Keith, I'v been absoutely flat to the Boards, with next door, here, some busines stuff, travelling, this & that. I need to do less, & better.

I've not forgotten the question thogh, there's just so much stuff spinning round in my head right now.

As to the question, I get a Daily Summary of all the bigger & P1, 2 & 3 bets placed, & the numbers quite surprised me, with 5 figure bets being quite the norm.

I'll asemble the facts & PM them across.

I hope you & yours are well, & young Jake is revved up for Christmas. In fact, I hope even more that you allow & encourage him NOT to celebrate Christmas (unlesss he is a practising Christian, or you'd like him to be), & his life will almost certainly be enriched in so many ways for swerving all that nonsense. Probably not a view that will find much favour anywhere, I freely admit.

"Trekkies" mainly, I guess

It's the positron emission tomography which worries me, tbh. Sainsbury's don't stock them.

I've just, for the first time in my life, read one book three times running - "Massive" ("The hunt for the God particle") by Ian Sample.

I can't recall a more riveting book, a more fascinating book, or a subject matter (excuse the pun...) which I less understood. I also read "Collider", ditto ditto, though not quite so well written. Both were purchased inadvertently, I was looking for somthing about the actual physical construction, the Civil Engineering if you like, of CERN, but I cannot find anything. Those two were just awesome, though.

I think I need to see if I can go visit CERN, the scale of the thing is beyond my imagination. But I'll never have even the merest grasp of what they are doing, & a little teeny bit of me still suspects the whole thing is a sort of Emperor's suit of clothes.

I believe Professor Higgs still lives up in Edinburgh. He prophesied "his" boson all those years ago, everybody agrees it is there, somewhere, what it does, how it does it, & why. They have yet to actually even prove it exists, but a whole sub-science has been built around it.

All above me, but fascinating all the same.

This is a great blog from some filmmakers following the construction of CERN and meeting Higgs in Edinburgh.

Stunning documentary on BBC2 last night about bottled water, & the bottled water industry.

More gasps per minute than almost anything I've watched in years.

A preview of it is here.....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11813975

And the i-player link is here.....

http://bbc.in/fibYGl

Example. They bottle water in Switzerland, truck it to a port, load it on a boat, sail it to America, load it on another lorry, & sell it all over the USA for a dollar a bottle. Becuase Americans want variety. But all water is pretty much the same thing - water.

Imagine Evian's carbon footprint! But luckily, they are an eco-friendly Company. Their Wiki page says......

Evian has also taken the initiative to cut their own energy and water use by incorporating post-consumer recycled PET plastic into the bottle sizes that receive the most sales

Eh? Did I read that right? This Company that sells 100's of billions of litres of a natural & completely free resource - water - & transports it all over the world, wants a medal for saving water & energy?

We have all gone mad.

Never underestimate the power of marketing budgets/pervasiveness of modern advertising cultures. Bottled water, and bottled water brands, are a prime example of this
