What's happening about you and Red Dog playing the WSOP main event this year?

Bump

I don't really know to be honest, Keith.

I was incredibly humbled by the whole thing, I find it a tad embarrassing to discuss really.

A good bit of water has flowed under the bridge since then, too, one way & another....

Do it.  Would the most epicnessest rail thread ever!

I'm pretty sure he would far rather play one or both of the $10KPLO/PLO8 tournies.

It would be equally epic and somewhat more equitable IMHO.

Meh.

There is nothing more exciting than playing the WSOP main event.

Plus much more ev.

win win win situation.

I've heard the standard is roughly akin to a £150 comp here. About right?

It's completely random.

The year I went deep I didn't have a decent player with position on me until day 6

The next year I had a table from hell. Phil Galfond, Edward Moncada and couple of Pokerstars Team Online.

Bet Phil Galfond tells the same story Smiley

I had fun playing almost playing getting close to almost playing railing last year. Going from watching Teddy Sheringham to Live Boeree to Phil Hellmuth is quite surreal.

It's absurd to me that someone who's had so much involvement in the game over such a long period of time has never experienced playing the Main, you know you'd love it, it has to be done, imho ofc Tongue.

When it's put like that I agree obviously you should play the ME once in your life.

After a great meal with friends, last night, we ended up in the Rainbow casino. This was the first time in close to 15 years. This was the place where I, and so many others, cut my teeth on holdem poker. This was a great place with all the old stalwarts of British poker plying their trade. In the 80's the £10 rebuys regularly made upwards of £4k.

As an aside there used to be an old Greek boy called Nikita who achieved 7 wins in 7 days one week. He was a larger than life character who played an absolutely great game.

Anyway to cut a long story short, it's changed, It's been totally remodelled baring no internal resemblance to the good old days. No poker tables, no cash games, no craps, only 4 roulette tables (used to be 12 in its heyday, fruit machines everywhere and NO atmosphere. Such a disappointment all that history and nothing to show for it apart from memories. I don't think I'll be visiting again in the next 15 years.

On the bright side I sat down and played 3 card poker and the very first hand hit a straight flush followed closely by 2 flushes and 3 straights and my initial stake turned into £300 in less than 20 min.

Good Lord, The Rainbow!

Back in the day, that was THE place to go for Live Poker.

I'm sure Karabiner has a hundred "Rainbow" stories, if we could but persuade him to tell a few.

Kim, who passed away a few days ago, was a regular there, too. Everyone was really, it was where it all happened then.

Taffy, from Derby, won the UK Open or somesuch there back in around 1990, or so he used to tell us all. Every night.

I have just randomly googled a Tourney at the Rainbow in 2000, this was the Top Ten.

John Bostock

Allan McLean

Dave Colclough

Craig Grant

Garry Bush

Rumit Somaiya

K Vasiliou

Kevin O'Connell

Frankie Knight

Tony Girasoli

Blimey, some stories between that lot, the only one who does not ring any bells with me is John Bostock.

Tony Girasoli was quite a chap, he was the original Tony G, as I recall. Lived in Glasgow, I think, & was, by trade, a Librarian or Accountant. Possibly.

Garry Bush, was he known as the alien, due to his gaunt look? If so there was a TV documentary on some poker players, mainly from the Rainbow, the year escapes me but could have been late 90's and he was claiming to make £300k a year back then from cash games. Lucy Rokach may have been on it too.

Ha i remember that documentary, hilarious.

It was bad, I've been trying to find it all morning with no joy. Anything to get out of work.

Was that the one with Hellmuth and Trumper in?

I have to quote that, because Karabiner can be SO subtle, & you may have missed it.

If I played Omaha WSOP Events, it would be a more equitable investment. Can you think of a nicer way of stating the fact that I'm shite at NLH?

Quality stuff Ralph, & well done on cashing again in "your" Omaha Tourney last night, for about the 3rd time in a week.

Masterful.

It was great to see you in Vegas last Summer.

Teddy & Liv played out one spectacular hand, which lasted all of 20 minutes, with more "face like thunder" staredowns than enough. Great to watch, pretty sure Teddy was bluffing, & Liv had the absolutes, but I've never seen one hand take as long to play out.

BAFTA Awards a-plenty.

I was really hoping you would find some material you could dance with, we showed 3 or 4 hands from your Table, but you had nothing to go to war with.

Hope you got the seat for tomorrow's £30,000 Biggie though. Whoops, bit of spam slipped in there.

It was a really fun Show, actually. I had not been at my (mediocre) best on Tuesday's Show, but Thursday was much better, I think the Sky Sports simulcast, with the (relatively) huge viewing figures deffo revs me up.

The non-poker theme"was "Trading Places", & as I was on with Film Bore Hartigan (but VERY good Presenter, must be said), I had to take questions on his subjects - Films & NFL - & he had to take questions on Concrete, Bridges, Trains etc.

I did OK, too, I got most of the NFL ones correct, except for the origin of the name "49-ers" & the name of the American Football team who play in Omaha, Nebraska.

On Films, not so good. I had never heard of David Lean, or "Skyfall", which caused some embarrassment. It's a Bond film, apparently, though not a Fleming novel. How that work? And I gather Sean Connery no longer does the Bond films.

One chap wrote in & asked what was the best product to lay his drive, tarmac or cement.

cement?

What? So, that opened the door to lengthy explanations of the difference between cement, & concrete. You can't lay a drive, or anything else, with cement for goodness sake. The Sky Sports audience must have been transfixed.

Next up, the difference between a roof & a ceiling, or tiles & slates.

What do people learn at school these days?

I have flights and accommodation sorted to go back this summer so, if you're making the trip again, I'll see you there.

I just remembered the journey we shared going deep in the same event at the WSOP this year Tony, what a great memory. The highlight of my poker in 2012

Not sure if you mean that James, but assuming you do, yes, it was just the greatest experience of my poker life ever, I loved every minute, & I ran so good, too.

8 or Better attracts, largely, a different sort of poker player, it is much more relaxed & convivial, just perfect for me.

Because of the nature of the game, the Tables break very slowly, so you get to know your table companions better, & we were all on first name terms & just enjoying the ride.

When you came to my Table, & with position (we were short-handed I think), I assumed my number was up, because I knew you'd pummel my BB & just keep playing back at me, & I knew I could not handle you.

But poker is a weird game, & I found some absolutely corking hands & boards against you, & think I had two scoops, or would have had you not wisely passed. Nut-nut both times, obviously.

Around 1,000 runners entered that, & from what I witnessed, less than a few dozen seemed to understand that the game is about potential scoops, not splits.

I also vividly remember you running horrifically bad & busting soon after.

A few days later, I railed you deep in a 6-Max, I think, you had a ton of chips, but again got coolered several times & exited prematurely.

It was the first year I had ever gone to Vegas to actually play for a few weeks, except for the previous November, as opposed to "work" only, & I've never enjoyed any poker experience as much as I did that two weeks.

You have stirred my memory now, so look away, as I may have to reminiscence on that trip a little more.

Yoiu have been warned.

I will try not to mention my exit hand......
