It is a courtesy to the other dealer to say without words, the cards need shuffling, so rather than the next dealer just picking the cards up he is forced to shuffle, some dealers do it differently, i.e. half shuffle the cards but still usually turn the top card over. What you should never see though is a pre shuffled deck waiting for the next dealer.
Well thats what the explanation the person who trained me many moons ago said
EDIT: It is also an excuse for someone to bet the dealer a fiver that he can't turn an ace over
so basically what i said

sounds good to me Iron
it is good as its the truth
with one card face up the new dealer is forced to shuffle
wheras without a face up card they "might" accidently just start dealing
not going to happen alot but its a safe guard
The world must be coming to an end as Iron actually made sense...I think i can hear the horsemen approaching now.

Luton Days Inn, Friday.
Well, the answers Iron & dik9 gave come as close to making sense as any, so I'll leave it at that, my curiosity is entirely satisfied. Well, 90%......

It's Tighty's Birthday today, & I'd like to pay tribute to the grumpy old fart.
Do you know that without Tighty, blonde would either have closed down completely, or, at best, be in a real hole? Well, it's true.
He worked for us from Xmas 2006 until August 2007 as MD, CEO, or whatever title you prefer, but during that period, worked for free gratis. That's it, no pay, nothing. And paid various expenses out of his own pocket. From August or September last year, he got a small - & I do mean small, it's less than Minimum Wage I fancy - wage. It went up a bit recently, & not before time, but it's still daft small.
He's really come onto his own recently, & has struck deal after deal for us, almost always cutting it in such a way that the Members benefit, via some sort of cross-promotion with added-value. And he has lots more up his sleeve, watch this space.
More painfully, & I share this problem, running blonde has cost him a lot of friends. Decisions have to be made sometimes to keep blonde the way we want it, & Richard, being easily the most eloquent, best & most skilled writer, usually is the one to whom it falls to write the "Warning" or "Ban" PM/e-Mail. As a result, he gets the blame, every time, & there are plenty of blondes who have beseeched his good name, fallen out with him, just because he's the Messenger, delivering a collective message from the Mod Team. That's so wrong, & short-sighted by his detractors, but poker players are a weird bunch. He gets mauled on other Fora & Blogs regularly because of blonde, & gets PM's so offensive they make me cringe, ffs. How wrong is that? But he takes it in his stride, what a top bloke. He actually received an apology from a disgruntled Member yesterday - almost a first.
He works incredibly hard on APAT too - no pay there, nothing - but he has led from the front from Day One, along with Des.
See Rich in a Cardroom with Inernet Acces, & he's "on duty" again, checking that everything is cool on blonde. Things like that Brian Wilson "attack" the other night occur from time to time, & are more of a headache to us than most realise, they cause mountains of work, & lots of decisions, get one wrong & we are pilloried. And usually it's Rich who gets it in the neck.
Only one thing ever gets priority over his blonde & APAT work, without exception, ever, & that's his Kids, & rightly so, they are just THE most well-adjusted & beatifully mannered bunch you ever saw, & he's some proud Dad. Rich will do anything for blonde or APAT, but not when it's "kids weekend", no way.
His Posts are thought-provoking, & well-presented, & he works hard to generate Forum interest & buzz by being creative with new Threads.
Rich, you are the tops. I don't know what I, or we, would have done without you. Thank you.
Happy Birthday Big Fella.
PS - But he's still a grumpy old fart.
