Poker

Just for a change, a post about actually playing poker, instead of all the associated stuff that goes with the day job.

Today, fingers crossed, I'm going to play a little PLO Tourney, the APAT thing over at Aspers Stratford. A proper day off, away from all that has gone off in the last few months, lovely job.

Aspers Stratford is situated within one of London's biggest shopping malls, in the Olympic Park.

Big venue, we held a SPT there a few years back, & in doing so, upset the Party Poker crew who were filming "The Big Game", they got uppity with me for doing commentarty on our Event as they were filming. We had paid Aspers a fee to hold the event there, big fee, too (we don't pay DTD), so I had no intention of ceding to their request, & it all got a bit unpleasant. It was complicated by the fact that Kara was working for Party at the time, & she was there, & I had no wish to upset her, as we are good mates. Just one of those things. I seem to be able to find trouble without looking too hard. Fortunately, Kara understood, & it never affected our friendship.

Anyway, the place is a bit of a pain to drive to, right across London, & with it being Saturday, there will be queues & jams to access the car park, so I'll have to take the jolly old tube train. I'll drive to Hatton Cross, then it's something like 27 stops on the Piccadilly & Central Lines. You can usually reckon on 3 minutes per station for tube journeys, so thats 1 hour 20 minutes each way, plus driving to & from the Station, call it a 4 hour round trip, & allow £25 for fares & car park. All for a £50 comp, which makes no sense at all, does it?

It's PLO, too, in which we can very easily go busto early doors, which would be a bit of a bummer, as I've been looking forward to this for weeks, but thats the nature of the beast. So I won't play "money scared", but I might suffer from "all this way for nothing if I bust" scared.

I've tended to do quite well in these little affairs over the last 2 years, a strike rate (to cash) in excess of 50%, but sample size & all that, so it means bugger all really.

Even now, I can predict the early levels, I just sit there folding hand after hand, whilst the lads are playing every hand, limpety limp limp. Then the derogatory comments start because I'm such a nit (just joshing, tongue in cheek) & I get more & more uncomfortable & embarrassed. But too bad, that's just my game, & how I play. I played some knockabout PLO @ UKPC, it was (almost) any 4 cards (or 5/6), but this is a Tourney, so a different matter. I'm incrediubly fussy about my opening hand ranges, unbelievably strict. Anyone who wants to play PLO needs to get their opening ranges dialled in properly, imo, that is where success & failure begin.

Be great to see the APAT lads again, too, & see how what was once something very special to me has grown up. Never played an APAT event before, actually, incred when you think abouit it, as I attended dozens of them.

I'm excited, really. Love Live poker, love PLO, love APAT. What can possibly go wrong?

Think the PLO is a double chance so you should be comfortable.

Enjoy it, hopefully see you for the 4/5/6 PLO there Monday, now there's a proper tourney, 6 card where you need big hands (not just to hold all the cards!).

Ahh, never realised it was Double Chance - that's excellent news.

I've been dithering all week as to whether to take the car, or go by train, now I'm dithering as to what to wear - should I wear my Sky Poker gear, or would that seem a bit "ooh, look at me in my posh poker shirt".

Wish I could stop dithering & worrying about everything.

Sounds all rather jolly & exciting, Tom, though for context, it was 12 years ago. I'll take a book to read, just in case. (Using the torch on my Moby, presumably).

I'm with my family this weekend Tony, starting my five day WCOAP shift next Thursday.  Going to hate missing your debut at APAT.  You (and the Tight one) did so much for APAT and recreational players over the years with your blonde, APAT and Sky work.  Not to mention 425, PNL, etc.  I'd love to see you keep that cashing record up, or maybe even walk away with the bracelet and medal.  Now that would be something special.

Hey, had sky sports down the other day to film a pilot for a new programme called Golf Juice, being pitched to the bigwigs on Monday! If we get this it will be a right coup! Put in a word for us!!

https://app.aframe.com/links/8864f7dc064eb74d231204ec753cc912

If only I could.

Is that your golfing emporium? Most impressive.

Hope the Show gets the go-ahead, club golf needs a bit of a pick-up right now, as you will be only too aware.

Why the show title - "Golf Juice"? Juice? Don't quite get that.

Hope they don't dumb it down too much either. Even if you paid me good money, I'd not watch any Show, never mind one about golf, that had dreadful & inappropriate backing music as was heard on that clip. Oh no Sir.

I'd much prefer a golf equivelant of the excellent "Tight Lines", that would be just the job. No silly music or gimmicks, & a grown up Presenter. Don't much like all that singing & dancing bollox.

Fingers crossed for you, though.

Hey Tikay, no idea about the dynamics of the show cos we're only providing the venue. What I do know is sky sports want a "TopGear style show" about golf, so I guess it's going to be kinda laddish with the odd fracas thrown in for good measure. Our brand is going to get a load of exposure tho which is the only thing I'm worried about.

I doubt it will boost anything to do with club golf, if anything it will be detrimental. In all honesty I think club golf will steadily decline for ever and a day now there are more fun ways to get a golf club in your hands.

We are now official partners with MGM and break ground on our Vegas location in a week or two. It's going to be a $80m construction and will be situated right next door to the MGM, everybody will drive past it from the airport. A four tier driving range and entertainment complex with about 1k staff. We are just about the fastest growing company in the world right now and we learnt in the AGM this week that the company will be worth a billion dollars within a year. The best news is rather than coming to Dallas for these boring meetings we'll be having them in Vegas from next year onwards. Sweet baby Jesus!!

Thanks Des.

It was not to be, it was a 2 day affair, but I managed to distribute my chips inside the first day.

Would not have missed it for the world, the APAT atmo is still very much there, and if a nicer bunch of people ever gathered for an event, I've yet to meet them. I had a grand table, too.

Irish Tom (?), welcomed me, & was incredibly warm & friendly, even gave a little speech in my "honour", which was all a little embarrassing.  He seems to be a top top bloke.

I won't be there tonight or Saturday, I'm sorry to say, partly explained by a post or two to follow. (What a pain that place is to get to by road or train). I have to work tomorrow, too, so I can't risk a semi all-nighter tonight. Can't go the pace these days I'm afraid, & I need the energy tanks topped up for tomorrow night. Saturday, I'll be on allotment duties.

Really hope the rest of the APAT Fessie goes well - I'm sure it will.

The tourney was 4 card PLO, and if there is a better game than PLO, in it's various guises, I've not played it. I adore that game.

Lovely table, all friendly, & was sat next to blonde's very own Luther. Minimum age was about 50, lol.

The structiure was lovely, perhaps a tad too slow, as it allowed us all to splash around with all sorts for a good few hours before it got serious. I got some gentle ribbing for being so nitty, but I can't play without decent material, & I think that's the key to the game.

I dribbled from 15,000 to 12,0000 even so, I could not win a hand.

Around the time of the first bresk, a young man joined the table, & it was like turning a light on - he was clearly a player as opposed to a roffler or splasher.

We got chatting, & later, during a break, he introduced himself to me, after addressing me as "Anthony". Turned out he was a regular but low-profile blonde, and a really smashing chap. He asked to remain anon, but he works for a company I used to know quite well, who specialise in concrete products, so we had a proper excited natter. If he is reading this (unlikely, he does not read the Diaries afaik) was great to meet you bud, & I hope you took it down.

I never had too many exciting hands that I recall, but I just love the feel of cards, chips, & the puzzles that PLO set us.

More follows.....

Just after the 1st break, I was down to 12,000, but had not taken my Double Chance chips.

No need to bore everyone with too many deets, but I flopped bottom set in the BB, & check-called a bet from a decent player. I just wanted to see how he progressed on the turn. Bottom set can be dangerous. The flop was a great drawing flop, too...

He can have a lot of draws there, or even a set. I wanted to see a turn & then decide how to proceed.

The turn was another 6, giving me quads.

I might be the only player alive who thinks its neat to get the lot with quads, but he either turned the house or he did not, so I decided I may as well bet, & see what he did. After some not unreasonable theatrical dwelling, he re-raised me. Now I knew, & we got it in pdq. Full 2xup. Felt sorry for the guy, you just can't get off these buggers.

This put me in great shape but alas, it was all downhill after that, not helped by one dubious call in the BB (unraised pre) with bottom house. I flopped bottom trips on 10-4-4, then turned the house when a 3 arrived. He had been betting a bit wide, but I eventually conceded/decided he had the over house, but not before dumping too many chips off.

It got to 10pm, & I was still bumbling along nicely, & then something like this went off.....

I had......

...and we got to the turn on this board.....

So, two nut draws & one bad draw. There was plenty in the pot, & I c/r all-in. And got TWO callers for an abso monster pot.

I missed, & that was that.

The payout structure was in my mind, to be fair - 8 paid, & just £165 for 8th. (Prize pool was 66 x £50 = £3,300, so probably about £1,500 to the winner). The journey to & from Straftord was a perfect nightmare, so if I was going to come back, it would be with a big stack. That's my excuse, anyway.

I still have some waffle & nonsense to write about the APAT thing last weekend, but for now......

Tonight, it's the 2nd "Sky Poker TV" thing on Sky Sports.

I was asked if I could do something on the Show I've never done before, & I'm pretty sure I'll be poo at it.

The sooner midnight comes, the better.

Then I have a break from TV for 3 weeks, which will do me - & the viewers - a world of good.

I've got in a bit of a hole again with a backlog of PM's & stuff, & I've not written an article for 2 weeks as the old bonce is spinning a bit.

Plans for lots of other stuff, currently under the radar, are progressing well though.

Easter should be a nice break, I have company, so that will interfere with my addiction to online. Might just play Online on Saturday evening though, Next Door have their Easter UKOPS, which includes a nice, affordable little PLO Tourney. £22, & a £1,000 G'tee, not exactly a big deal, but it's all so nice & relaxed in those things, with plenty of friendly banter in the chat box.

OK, gotta go. What a fascinating post that was.....

You might as well play the $33 Omania on 'Stars if you're free.

It starts at 7.05pm and gets 350/450 runners with almost double on Sunday.
