I think "The Sporting Life" might have been my favourite newspaper ever, I never took to the Racing Post at all, & the Racing Chronicle (mainly distributed up north) always seemed poo to me.

Even now, I can remember the main contributors, Dick Whitford (he had a Rating System), George Ennor, & a guy called Tony Morris who specialised in the breeding side, which was the part I most enjoyed, trying to find winners by breeding.

The best staying pedigree at the time came from a stallion called "High Line", & Henry Candy trained a lot of his stock.

Amazing how I can remember this nonsense from 40 years ago, but can't remember what I had for dinner last night. 

Oddly, Sporting Life.com is part of the SB&G Group now, & they publish a bit of my stuff from time to time when they are hard up for Content.

Oh dear, I'm waffling again, time to move on.

a bit of history then Tikay,as you asked.
bought the shop in a south yorks village in 1987,just before the live pictures came in. just a run down wooden hut with a busy Working Mens Club next door. as you say, they had def "massaged" the figures a bit but it was in a good spot,and with hard work and good customer service we ended up with a shop doing £1 million turnover over the counter (2008).
changes to the "proof of demand" laws meant that when two of my customers wanted to open a shop in the same village i was powerless to stop them. when hearing of their plans i told them that one good shop would become two average ones and sure enough that happened. at the same time expenses were rocketing with turftv entering the picture market and the jobs for the boys Gambling Commission regulating the business. turnover decreasing and expenses increasing is not a good recipe,and i sold out to the "opposition" in Feb 2011.
not sure that i'd like the earlier openings and later closing times that seem to be in force now, and with betfair and mobile apps i'm not sure we'd be doing £1million otc, but i got a good living out of it when the times were good,and diff class been self employed.

The current diet combo for evening meal is......

Cod loins

1 small tin Chopped toms ("Tesco's Finest"), with several dashes of Worcester Sauce for added zing zest & bite.

1 small tin marrowfat peas. (To ensure I eat enough veg to maintain my physique).


For afters, a bag of fresh grapes.

Most satisfying, though it does tend to induce outbreaks of remarkably impressive Compo style flatulence.

Aldi tinned peeled tomatoes are the nuts.

Try freshly ground pepper and a splash of vinegar in place of the Lea & Perrins btw.

Only people who live, or have lived, around the Hinckley/Nuneaton area would know about a 'splash', or a 'dip'.
