I think Watergate remains my all-time favourite news story. It ran for a very long time, & the story unfolded day by day, mainly as two journos on the Washington Post, Woodward & Bernstein, were slowly revealing more information bit at a time.

It was a real pot-boiler, and in an age where life was more innocent, we all read the story with jaws agog. Eventually, of course, President Nixon, after appointing & sacking several Special Investigators, had no choice but to resign.

And the most beautifully ironic part was that for reasons of vanity, Nixon had a secret taping device in his office which recorded every conversation in the Oval Office. It was that very taping device which proved his undoing.

The story was so wonderful because, like that Suez Canal problem last week, nobody died or was even injured, so we were free to revel & gloat without any pangs of conscience. 9/11 was a breath-taking story too, but with 3,000 innocent people killed we could hardly treat it with the fascination & eventual glee we did for Watergate.

Anyway, the man charged with organising the Watergate break-in & orchestrating the cover-up was Gordon Liddy, who died last night. He served around 4 years in prison for his role in Watergate, & never at any stage co-operated or grassed anyone up. After he was release, he earned an absolute fortune on the speaking Circuit.

Quite the character, & I eventually came to like him very much.

Not sure if life would be as good as it is without Wiki, it's a proper time-sponge but I adore it.

A friend sent me this one overnight. It's about a Baseball player  who made his debut in 1897. Yes, 1897, not 1987. And he was well handy;

a remarkably dominant strikeout pitcher in an era when batters mostly slapped at the ball to get singles. He had an excellent fastball, a sharp-breaking curveball, a screwball, and superb control; his strikeout-to-walk ratio was almost 3-to-1, and he led the major leagues in strikeouts for six consecutive years.

But he was a bit weird too.....

He was notably unpredictable; early in his career, he would often leave in the middle of a game to go fishing.[2] He also had a longstanding fascination with fire trucks, and had run off the field to chase after them during games on multiple occasions.[3] He would disappear for months at a time during the offseason, and it was not known where he went until it was discovered that he was wrestling alligators in a circus.[4] He was easily distracted by opposing fans who held up puppies, which caused him to run over to play with them, and shiny objects, which seemed to put him in a trance.[5] An alcoholic for much of his short life, Waddell reportedly spent his entire first signing bonus on a drinking binge, with Sporting News calling him a "sousepaw".

And that was only for starters. With hindsight, he had mental health issues it seems.

Some read, & there's plenty more besides.

I chanced upon this 'photo on Twitter this morning which I much enjoyed seeing.

Photos can be misleading, but I get the impression that against all odds Wayne might just be a good Dad, though I imagine Coleen deserves most of the credit.

Wayne gets proper ripped in the Media, sometimes deservedly, but he's not all bad.

I know a little girl who had a tumour on her retina discovered because of a white spot on a photograph.

Sometimes it's just a photographic anomaly, occasionally it isn't.

Good grief. Well I really hope it's not the case here.

PS - That was not quite the reply I was expecting.

Suspect we differ quite a lot on the Royal Family, but thought this was very good.

That's a good read, thanks David.

Meanwhile, BBC1 & BBC2 have devoted their entire schedule to him.

And BBC Four?

Programmes on BBC Four have been suspended

And BBC Radio 3. And all the regional BBC radio stations.

I'm a Royal fan but why broadcast on every channel, are we not allowed a choice, except turn it all off?

100% agree.

I'm a respectful Royal Family fan but this seems too much.

I use the sounds app all the time Tony but I was out in the camper yesterday and I only have access to ordinary radio in there.

I love Liza Tarbuck and Johnnie Walker, also Tony Blackburn Sounds of the Seventies.

Gary Davies 1980s is a bit too modern for my taste although he does play a few good records.
