Earlier, I wrote...
Been a testing 24 hours one way or another, both on & off the poker tables.
So, to yesterday's poker.
It was one of those days when 2 or 3 seats were getting all the cards, whilst me & others were sitting there being dealt hand after hand of deleterious matter. Not complaining, & every single one of you have experienced the same thing. It's how poker works, sometimes you just have to drop anchor & ride out the storm.
So it becomes a test of character. Just sit there & suck it up without getting arsey or testy, that's the challenge. Not saying I love having a hard time, or I'm a masochist or whatever, but there's tremendous satisfaction in meeting adversity & not letting it get under your skin, or at least not showing it. Lashing rain, wind in the face & uphill can never be nice, but afterwards, if you've not buckled & thrown a strop, the satisfaction is enormous.
It was a little $240 Limit O8 affair at Orleans, & I don't pretend to fully grasp the mechanics of Limit Betting in Tourneys but I get by. 185 players, but with Limit, at the sharp end - especially in a $240 - it gets super quick.
And I sat & waited & waited for about 6 hours. I can do patience, no problem, & my sweet spot in MTT's is when I have a quarter or third average at the sharp end with 3 or 4 tables left, that's when it's the most fun. Every hand is life or death. And I don't mind losing, I just love that buzz when you are all-in & the hands are opened. The winning buzz of course is even better.
Anyway, the cards eventually started to turn & with some 40 players left (24 paid) I started to manage to get in the game, but then three successive pots in which I got quartered each time did for me. It's important to avoid getting quartered of course, but 2 of these were identical, I flopped wheel & 6 high straight & bet it for all it's worth, but my man had the wheel & rivered a flush both times. Same bloke too.
To compound all that, the convo somehow turned to conspiracy theories. 9/11, Man on the Moon, JFK assassination, Trump shooting, Oklahoma bombing, the entire table all agreed that they were ALL the work of the FBI. I was almost pleased to bust in the end, conspiracy theorists do my head in. Twats.
And on reflection, though it was only a $240 & I came home empty handed, it was probably one of my best efforts of the trip. Patience is much under-rated.
And so, after patting myself on the back, so to speak, I'm off shortly to give that Wynn $1,100 a spin. 1 bullet only though. Somewhat surprisingly, I've not had any second bullets yet this trip, mainly I suppose because I'm overly tight early doors.

See you in a bit Tony. Got here early for my one decent meal of the trip. So much nicer here than the Horseshoe. Got some Dim Sum and Sushi on the way. Food of Champions, sure you'll hate it.
Quite enjoy the daily deepstacks at the Horseshoe. Skill level is patchy. Not as painful as WSOP hold em.

Am done. Got AA twice that cost me the rest of my stack on the first buy in and half my stack in the 2nd buy. First I was short, and the other somebody else was. Both times there was barely anything to put in after the flop. Both times they flopped top set. Don't think I could do anything else to avoid it both times.
There were a couple of genuinely horrid hands on the first buy in. First one I had A9234ds. I raised from EP. Got three calls flop AT9 with nut flush draw. Bet got 2 calls. Turn A. Checked for disguise, but then someone after me bet large. Had to call (obv?). I checked river and he shoved for maybe half pot. I decided he must have A9 or AT, and as I had A9, AT was more likely and folded. He had A9. Think I lost 25k.
Not long after I had 2nd nut/2nd nut, and had to call off after hand above. This time he had nut/nut, but was only 20k total loss.
So had gone 65k to 20k in not very long just before the AA loss. I think when I said one level, it was probably just 2 orbits.
Think I'll miss next year unless something good happens. Will work out the total damage Tony.

At the time I was still in, in my original seat, that's when I found you in your new seat.
I was not there much longer though, think I exited in Level 7 or 8. Chasing the nut flush after I flopped 4 to the flush, I backed into 10's full, & did a huge mental fist pump, as it was a big pot, 4 way to the flop, 3 way to Turn & River. No good v Kings full though.
Decided against Bullet #2.
I've budgeted for 2nd bullets in several events, that one included, but when it comes to it I sort of bottle it, it just seems such a lot of money to lose twice. Old habits die hard.
Today it's the WSOP $1,500 Big O, probably the one I'm most looking forward to. Deffo budgeted for 2 bullets today, but whether I have the courage to actually do so is another matter. $3,000 in one MTT seems - & is - such a lot.
Anyway, I've regged using the WSOP+ App so I'm all set.
I find I'm too defensive/timid early doors, so I'm going to try & be more aggressive today.

Returning, if I may, to The Orleans Hotel, which Mr Raab rightly & fairly gently mocked, albeit tongue in cheek,. it's very successful. It has an Arena, a Theatre, Concert Hall, Bowling Alley & all sorts. The business plan is to have concerts & beauty pageants or whatever, & the attendees book a room for a few nights, gamble & eat etc.
I went down in the lift last night & there was some sort of Drag Queen competition going off, so I was squeezed in a lift with 8 or 9 Drag Queens. I stood right in the corner, head down, not sure where to look.
And a week or so ago that had an American Beauty Pageant on. Very much a USA thing, Beauty Pageants.
They had a representative from each State & there were several categories.
Over 60's.
Over 50's
20' to 40's.
16's to 20's.
10's to 16's.
Not all of which made me comfortable. A 12 year old in push up bra, cleavage, false eyelashes, caked with make up seems all a bit discomforting to me. But it's America.
And now I'm going to demonstrate absolutely THE worst piece of promotional writing you ever saw in your life, this being for that Beauty Pageant.
If you don't throw up after reading this unbelievably saccharin-soaked dirge, then I'll be very surprised.

Think that's called "over-egging it".
I mean, what can you say? Don't think I've ever read two more vomit-inducing promo pieces. Who on earth ever thought that was a good piece?
Anyway, I was at The Orleans when it went off & every room was booked, so I guess it worked.
Welcome to the USA, 2025.

They have various gigs too.
Recently they had the Pointer Sisters.
Only Ralph will be old enough to remember them, they were big in the 70's.
They are still touring full time, but "Sisters" is no longer relevant, most of them are no longer with us so the group is made up of Daughters & even granddaughters who appear in rotation so to speak, so sometimes a different line-up every night.

Even more remarkably, Englebert Humperdinck appears here regularly.
He was a 2 hit wonder in the 60's - "(Please) Release Me" & "Last Waltz" & all these years later he's still Touring on the strength of those 2 hits. He was sort of a poor man's Tom Jones.
His current Tour is called "The Last Waltz World Tour", which in various guises has almost certainly been the title of his last 36 world tours.
Age? 88.
Amazing that he still fells the need to work/entertain he must be well loaded. God bless him. Not sure I'd pay a penny piece to go watch him, mind.

I ordered a ton of popcorn when Musk & Donald had their spat a few days ago, but it all went very quiet very quickly.
Don't want to get into politics, but I'd bet my last penny that Elon is a coke-head & was off his head that day. If you look back at Elon's various public appearances, especially at Trump rallies, with chainsaws & whatnot, pretty sure he was off his head each time.

It may not appear so, but I think I have a lack of aggression problem in big O. I missed at least two places where I should have definitely took the aggressive option and it cost me yesterday.
By contrast, did 3/4 of my stack trying to get someone to fold 4th pair in the daily deepstack!
Think Big O is a much better option for aggression than hold'em. You always have outs. Feels worse whimpering out than busting in level 3?
Anyway good luck, rip them a new one

Strange fact about the Pointer Sisters.
Their best-known song, "Fire" was written by Bruce Springsteen. Early in his career, he was better known as a songwriter. "Blinded by the Light (Manfred Mann) and "Because the Night" (Patti Smith) are also his originally.
If there is an afterlife, I so hope the Donald is married to Elon. They deserve each other

Crikey, I well remember Manfred Mann, & once saw them at The Ealing Club, in a basement right opposite Ealing Broadway Station.
Paul Jones was their lead singer at the time though he later moved on. No idea what became of him but he was a very special talent imo.
