Another thing kids today have been deprived of, with their X Boxes, BMX's & tellys.
This is Butlins, Clacton, 1947, & they are watching Punch & Judy.
I went to Butlins when i was a kid (28 now) and deprived is not the word i would look for.

Lol. Nothing unhygenic when I was a kid - you could get as dirty as you liked, build camps, drink from the same glass, race go-carts down the road, build tunnels from one kids garden to the next, spend long summers days playing in the fields and woods and no one was worried where you were until it got to tea time. And we always found our way back in time for tea and a bath. I survived on magic plasters and kisses. Obviously no germs in the 1960's.

The bad beat jackpot finally hit on Wed morning in the station casinos. The jacpot pot requirement was down to quad
or better getting beat.
At 3.45 am in the Sante Fe quad
got beat by quad aces resulting in the $432,000 jackpot being paid out.
The quad aces got $35,000 and the quad
got $45,000. The remaining $355,000 got shared equally between then 300 odd players playing at that time in all the station casinos. $1,150 just for being sat in a game
Its a hard way to make an easy living

Was chatting to one of tonight's Guests, Amer Latif, who's an awesome guy, from Laguna (sp?) Beach, California, & he's married to a lass from Huddersfield.
He's a Venture Capitalist, fascinating guy.
Anyway, somehow we got round to Facebook, where, word now reaches me that I've been getting hammered by snide comments all over the place. Hey-ho. (What a waste of anger if I don't ever see them!).
This Facebook craze is astonishing. In every Office I ever visit, all the kids are busy on their Facebook pages. What a strange phenomonen.
So, this guy tells me that at the top right-hand corner of Facebook pages, is a little button, or link/icon, called "Boss Approaching", & if you press it, the page turns into a business-like spreadsheet. Wow - surely that can't be true?

You can get a "panic button" that plugs into a usb port and will do that too.

If they worked for me, they'd need a panic button in their bloody arse, because it'd get a good kicking.
Mobile 'Phones, Radios, Internet browsing, newspapers, were all banned in my office. Jeez, I paid them to work, not play. And they showed their appreciation when I retired, & gave me a lovely send-off. Of sorts.

Funny that you say that internet browsing would be a no-no if someone worked for you. I have worked for several companies and have always done my best work when internet access was available or where I could read a newspaper. If there were very strict rules in any company I would move on asap..and, believe it or not, I am shit hot at my job.
In several company publications by the bigger employers it is now accepted that you only keep your best people if you give them some freedom in these areas. Mensa Magazine (the Mrs gets it as she's the clever one) had an entire article on just this subject..your best people need to be able to be creative..if you stifle that (by, for instance limiting internet access in my case..which gives me a chance to think about Hand histories and all that on Blonde and google for weird stuff) you dont get the best out of your best employees.
Admittedly most people are donkeys so this might not apply to some but overall I think its a good thing to allow employees some freedoms in this area.

I read a fascinating article about Aiden O'Brien, whose Duke of Marmalade won an astonishing fifth (is that true?) Group 1 of the Season today.
Aiden was being asked about a horse called George Washington, who'd been recalled from Stud Duties because he had fertility problems, & John Magnier had asked O'Brien if he could get some decent "black type" races onto his CV.
O'Brien was as pragmatic as ever.
George Washington is back at Ballydoyle, albeit isolated in a pre-training yard, and O'Brien must now try to convert his libido back into racing energy. "Sure it's possible, but your man's a bit more strong-willed than most," he said. "His mind gets unravelled and it will be interesting to see if we can put it all back together again. We always thought he was immature, mentally, and he got better as the year went on.
But at the moment he's got five legs!
He was getting up every morning and covering two, three, four mares. He'll be introduced to other horses in ones and twos.
He has to realise he can't cover everything he sees
. That's the way he is at the moment, which is natural enough."
