For Laz (or other Johnny Cash geeks), do you know the story behind these incredible lyrics? It has a whole Wiki page to itself, & seems steeped in confusion.
In a way, it's the story of my, & so many others, lives. What a wonderful piece of writing it is. It's called "Cats in the cradle".
A child arrived just the other day,
He came to the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay,
He learned to walk while I was away,
And he was talking 'fore I knew it.
And as he grew he'd say, "I'm gonna be like you dad,
You know I'm gonna be like you."
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon.
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
When you coming home dad? "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then,
You know we'll have a good time then."
My son turned ten just the other day,
He said, "Thanks for the ball dad come on let's play,
Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do." He said, "That's okay."
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed,
He said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah, you know I'm gonna be like him."
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon.
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
When you coming home dad? "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then,
You know we'll have a good time then."
He came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while."
He shook his head and then he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like dad is to borrow the car keys,
See you later can I have them please."
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon.
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
When you coming home son? "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then dad,
You know we'll have a good time then."
Now I've retired my son's moved away.
I called him up just the other day,
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."
He said, "Love to dad if I could find the time,
My new job's a hassle and the kids got the flu,
But it's nice talking to you dad,
It's sure nice talking to you."
And I hung up the phone it occurred to me,
He'd grown up just like me, my boy was just like me.
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon.
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
When you coming home son? "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then dad,
We'll gonna have a good time then."

although i know the song, i havent every heard a JC version of it anywhere. not really surprising since he must have recorded in excess of 200 albums in his career - so i doubt anyone has them all.
JC's last work was with a producer called rick rubin, who he recorded a series of 5 albums with (The American). These albums had a stripped back sound, and also were mostly cover versions. This is an interesting contrast to his earlier work.
My favourite work is the stuff that was 'left behind' after these sessions - 'Johnny Cash - Unearthed' is a series of 4 cd's which is basically the stripped back stuff, stripped back even further. It is available as a box set, and is a very worthwhile investment.
lyrically though this song takes some beating
Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry,
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky.
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River.
Then I'm gonna sit right here until I die.
I met her accidentally in St. Paul (Minnesota).
And it tore me up every time I heard her drawl, Southern drawl.
Then I heard my dream was back Downstream cavortin' in Davenport,
And I followed you, Big River, when you called.
Then you took me to St. Louis later on (down the river).
A freighter said she's been here but she's gone, boy, she's gone.
I found her trail in Memphis, but she just walked up the block.
She raised a few eyebrows and then she went on down alone.
Now, won't you batter down by Baton Rouge, River Queen, roll it on.
Take that woman on down to New Orleans, New Orleans.
Go on, I've had enough; dump my blues down in the gulf.
She loves you, Big River, more than me.
Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry, cry, cry
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky.
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River.
Then I'm gonna sit right here until I die.

After hearing yet another "Them and us" type argument the other day, I was reminded of these lines from an old Waylon Jennings song...
Two horses were trotting, they pranced and they ran
each one was commanded, by a cavalry man.
Two horses stood grazing, where their dead riders lay
a Union mare and a Confederate grey.

I'm a bit concerned here Trace. I always fancied treating myself to a bum clean out but I aint got no 6"stiletto's any more, unlike the girls in your piccys . Now my worry is, does the heal sort of of open the door for the tube so to speak, they all seem to be wearing them, as my steal toe capped work boots would kinda hurt a little more.
Don't worry Maureen - those pics were from Tikays personal stash - they didn't look like that when they came in to see me!

"Cat's in the Cradle,", is a song by American singer/songwriter Harry Chapin. It is the story of a father who does not have enough time to spend with his son, and then his son grows up and does not have enough time to spend with his father.
The song was written by Harry's wife Sandy, a poet and writer, long before the birth of their son Joshua. When Sandy showed it to Harry, there was only casual interest. After Joshua's birth, Harry realized just how much the song meant to him and, after retooling it some, eventually recorded it. The song became the best known of Harry's work and a staple for folk rock music.
The song was later recorded by Johnny Cash, Simon & Garfunkel, Ricky Skaggs, Finn Kalvik, Ugly Kid Joe, and Mandy Patinkin.
Interesting fact: The song was used as the music bed for the Northern Ireland Office anti-terrorism advertising campaign in the late 1980s.

Great stuff, thank you.
Except the last para. What?
They have ad campaigns to stop terrorism? Are you sure?
The mind boggles at the potential slogans.

Government was the largest advertiser in 2008, usurping P&G and pushing them down to the No.2 spot. Unilever in 3rd.

Jeez, some day. I arrived at the office raring to get started at 7am & walked into a real delicate situation. blonde, obv, sigh. GG 2 hours sorting that. Fast forward to nearly midnight, rinse repeat. "Time & place" seems a lost concept to some.
In between, the rest of the day was good. Recorded a Show at 10am, & followed that with 2 Promos.
Then we did a full block-through - that's sort of camera & lighting choreography - for a new Show that starts on Saturday. A very different Show it is, too, which might just shock a few. Traffic to the Site will soar as a result, pretty sure of that. So Rich Orford & I will do back-to-back Live Shows every Saturday night for the next 13 weeks, one of which will have a pretty full Studio, with other folks - as yet not named - involved. Who'd have thought I'd be messing with these sort of things at my age? All Bonus.

Tonight, I go home, & tomorrow, it's the long haul up to Harrogate, to meet a few people at HQ, & stay over. In theory I need to drive from Harrogate to London on Friday, ugh.
Saturday will be at Feltham all day, Sunday probz pop to Luton for the £100, & Monday down to Llanfrechfa, just north of Newport, on some private stuff. Then working the Friday, Saturday & Sunday, also Boxing Day & New Years Eve, praise be. I really have a major aversion to Xmas & New Year. They just get in the way of having a good time.
