Rex would grace any Eggheads team.

He should have put his name forward.

The long-awaited maiden flight of the Airbus A400M took place today.

It's a military transport aircraft, & there are confirmed orders for 180 of them. Airbus currently expect, on forecast sales, to lose €2 billion on the overall project. Multiply that by 10 & we could have a new LHC.

1) Why propellers, not jet engines?

2) Propeller design has changed since I was a boy.

There's an interesting article here about the propellers - you'll notice in the picture that engines next to each other rotate in opposite directions, which apparently is completely novel.

Rex to replace Boshi in the next eggheads team?

I don't like to blow my own trumpet (who does?), but I would have got the cement question Wink.

Great web-page that - thank you.

So, all these years, propellers have rotated in the same direction, & now, all of a sudden, they discover that DBE is much better. How extraordinary.

It's similar to the sudden & very belated change in thinking as to winglets on Civil Aircraft. And prersumably, DBE would obviate the need for winglets, as the airflow does not escape over the end of the wings, being concentrated in the central area.

I think I might become an A400M geek.

If anyone is interested - don't all rush - most of the Internet News Sites have a video of today's Test flight.

do you believe that the content of technical note 34 is adequate with regards to the definition of "high bay warehouse" or should it be more specific to allow "designers" less flexibilty in terms of  point loads and UDL loading?

Nah - the key here is to ensure the power-float finish is nice & shiny. Shiny is good, the CotW's & Artichokes like shiny, it impresses the Client more than "fit for purpose".

We did a fair few High-bays in their early days, for Sainsbury & Aldi in their Distribution Centres.

I keep meaning to jot down notes of the first Supermarket Petrol Station we ever did for Sainsburys, in Kingsway, Derby, back in the mid 80's.

As epic fails go, it was epic. Boy, did we make a cods of hat. The laws of natural bouyancy were a mystery to me then. Bouyancy & the construction of a Petrol Station? You bet.

I am a Chartered Building Surveyor (all commercial) and currently work for Malcolm Hollis LLP

My expertise is in acquisition and development work, and project management/contract administration. I also monitor developments on behalf of banks/funds/institutions.

I also for my sins deal with Dilapidations, but now that I am at MH there are far more experienced people to deal with those instructions.

If you've ever installed a septic tank (I've done 3 now) you learn very quickly about natural buoyancy. I buried the first one 6ft below ground and back filled with tons of soil. The next morning, there was the tank, sitting on the surface, laughing at me.

Got it in one.

Except ours was a 15,000 gallon petrol storage tank.

We dug the excavation, dropped the tank in with a big crane, & then backfilled with concrete.

I got a desperate phone call that night.

"Tone, you know that tank we installed today?"

"Yes....."

"It's sitting on top of the concrete".

"aaah...."

Latterly, we used big canvas straps to secure them in position, & filled them with water before the concrete pour.

Amazing to think how many Supermarket Petrol Stations we did - & that, pre the 80's, they never even existed.
