do you stake ppl that aren't personal friends?

Tongue

No.

I assume you are referring to last weekend, which was a whole different story, & reason. In short, I got the stake accidentally.

A friend asked me for some advice. He wished to buy half of someone in the £300. I know Dreenie vaguely, but know her game & style rather better.I  know her brother better than I know her, but I know her game better than I know him. If that makes sense.

I take such requests very seriously. Advising good friends who to stake is like tipping winners - it's all downside.

So I rung Dreenie, & told her I may have a backer for her. Nothing to do with me, I'm just brokering it for someone else, in effect, as I was asked for advice. I asked her a lot of questions. She answered them all fully, & honestly.

I went back to my pal & relayed all this. I said "you won't get better value than this kid. She has incred spirit, game, & aggression, but she does get a bit hot-headed & tilty at times". (FWIW, & imo, only 4 or 5 players have been as watchable as her in all the time I've been playing & watching poker, I would pay good money to watch her play, it's sheer dramatic theatre if you are a student of physical mannerisms - but that's another Story, & will have to wait).

As I signed off the phone call to my friend, & on impulse, & trying to underscore my strength of conviction in my recommendation, I said "& if you want me to take half of your action, I will - that's how strongly I believe in her". (He had wanted to invest 50% of £300, so I assumed the worst I'd be in for was £75).

He rung or wrote me a day later & told me he'd purchased 100% (at x%/x%), & that I owned half. Which was a bit of a shock/surprise to me, but I was happy to let it ride. And so, I got lucky. Very lucky, as I had no intention whatsoever of getting involved, I was just responding to a question from a pal of many years standing. He did all the "business", the confirming by e-Mail, the buying-in, the payment stuff, the negotiations, I did nothing. Except give him £150 on Sunday afternoon. I was a passenger, or sleeping partner, in the transaction really.

As Garrison Keiller famously wrote, "how do these things happen?".

I stake quite a few friends privately, on a one-off ad-hoc basis, & have several stakes in play at the moment. I have no plans to extend it beyond my close friends, but I would probably make an exception in this case if the chance arose again.

She didn't let you down, and if it hadn't been for that one hand, I'm sure she'd have gone on to win it.  She impressed a lot of people over the weekend.

Wouldn't have helped much, there was a king on the flop.

When Boshi had KK in against her AK, were you rooting for the Ace?

That was THE most extraordinarily interesting & perplexing moment, more of which later. Of course, I knew Boshi's hand, or, at least, I had narrowed it down to 2 hands, max. I had no idea what Dreenie had, & was quite surprised how strong her hand was. Even so, 5 handed, it's a tough lay-down. Given her range, I suppose Dan could be as weak as Queens there.

Did I wish the A to fall?  Well the K flopped, so it's almost irrelevant.

Suffice to say, for now, that many people congratulated Daniel after he won, but my "well done" was as warm, sincere & heartfelt as any, & I think Daniel would confirm that.

Once I got above my stake (£170, not £150 as I stated earlier) it was all Freeroll for me.

I thought it was an incred moment, when she was on the dwell. I thought about it non-stop in the 3 hour drive South after I left DTD. I'm really fascinated by that juxtaposition of wishes. Of course I wanted her to win - & no less, for Dan to win. The money was sort of irrelevant at that moment - but I was torn.

During 1 break, 5 or 6 handed in the Final, I bumped into Dreenie, who had got all the Table perfectly "figured", except Dan. That was another "interesting" dilemma.

There's another dimension to the whole thing, too, but I'm not sure I dare write about that right now, because it may accidentally give offence to someone I have no wish to offend.

It was, truly, a very interesting day, all in all.

You going to York next week?

Yes - on Friday. Full "Corporate box" jobbie. You going to be there?

Am staying at a Hotel right by the Course, I believe. I'm actually working "Online" on the Friday evening, as it happens, so I need it to be nearby.

I used to be a Member at Cheltenham & Newmarket, & (my company) had a box at Donny, & was big into Racing, but time constraints, & telly (watching Racing on TV wins hands down), &, you know, you move on in life, different things appeal (I took up golf etc) so I have not been for 20 years or more. I'm not entirely sure I'm looking forward to it, to be honest. Well I am, & I am not - it will be very "Corporate" for me.

I was awarded - I await the mocking, it's OK, fire away - a "High Achiever Award" from Sky Poker/Sky Bet, & part of the prize was a day with the Sky Bet Group MD & his party in the Sky Bet Corporate Box at York. Sky Bet, of course, sponsor a lot of races these days.

The prize also included a Meal at a posh eatery with the CEO & the MD in London, which so nearly went disastrously wrong. The arrangement was to eat in an upmarket Fish & Chip Restaurant (!) near Waterloo, opposite some Theatre, which was fine, or would have been if I were not dieting at the time.

But they slung me a curve-ball at the last moment, & moved the location to a Tapas Bar. Yeah, me in a Tapas Bar.....

In fact, the food was lovely - posh sausages, grilled liver, bit & bobs like that, & I actually liked it. Little plates though, saucer-size, not sure what that was about. But it was ruined by music - they had a pianist tinkling away, which was OK, but he was singing, too. In foreign. Can't be doing with foreign singing. Why on EARTH would they have foreign music in a Tapas Bar? Who wants that? It was Spanish, or Mexican, I think.

Another part of the prize was a weekend at a beautiful Country House Hotel. For two. Shame I'm solo these days, that would have been a rather pleasing weekend for two.

Must be nice to work for a company that nice and not one that rejects holiday requests so you can't go away with your family after they have told you it would be okay originally.

I know the exact Tapas bar you mean. It's pretty popular.

My uncle has a shop a few doors down. If you fancy a sandwich where no one sings in foreign you should pop in there.

No, unfortunately only going on Tuesday and Wednesday this year.

It's my favourite meeting of the year, fantastic course and tremendous racing, without the starch of Royal ascot or Glorious Goodwood.

Plus I met Katharine there, Ebor Day, 9 years ago. Those years have flown by!
