It's called Picasa Rod.

It's not very sophisticated but it's extremely simple to use. You can crop, straighten, sharpen, increase saturation, adjust brightness / contrast, tint, make B&W or sepia etc.

It's free to download.

If you do alter any pics, make sure to save the new ones as a copy. That way, you still have your originals.

Yes. I tested it on Kizzy but I think I did it wrong.

free and easy to use for simple edits.

If you're serious about getting into nature photography Tikay then I'd suggest you need an SLR and some long lenses. I have a Canon300D which was one of the early Digital SLRs, the current version is the 500 I think - not pocket sized, but not overly bulky with the standard lens attached (will fit in most manbags).

No matter what you sepnd on a compact camera you can't match the potential of a decent SLR. But if you choos that route - look out for ranges which have the capacity to have an added optical lens to hekp with those long-distance shots. Fuji finepix (again not a 'pocket camera' but will fit easily into your manbag)

Thank you for the photo-enhancement software tip, it certainly makes a big difference. Not sure I wholly approve of it though, it seems a bit like cheating, almost like poker tracking software. Probably just what I need, in both cases, in fact.

Thanks for the camera advice.

I've already decided that it needs to be a SLR, though that's as far as I've got.

I went into a proper camera shop yesterday, but the bloke made my head spin with all his sales speak. I said "look, I'm a complete novice, I don't mind what it costs, but I need to be able to understand it, & work it, & just want an SLR "starter camera"".

I might as well have spoken to a brick wall, off he went with his tech-speak, & off I went out of the door, in a chompy-esque flounce.

The quality of salesmanship is SO poor these days, in general, as so many peeps don't understand O level psychology.

Not a bit of it. Every camera 'interprets' what it sees depending on the type of lens, the way the sensor is set up, and lots of other tweakable features. All you are doing is adjusting that interpretation to show something that is closer to what you think it should be.

It's no different than when we used to use film and do the tweaking during the developing.

Software? I hear you, yes, but it just seems like covering up one's inadequacies. Anyway, you said yesterday "don't worry about the "bad" photos, it gives the atmo"......
