Bloody Hell! I go away for a few hours and it takes me for ever to catch up on this thread.

You know when there's a heavy downpour after a dry spell and you see a little river of dirty water rushing along the gutter, dragging a pile of flosam and jetsem with it as it goes....

War Horse, urgh

Loved the battle scenses and WW1 re-creation. The rest of it is schmaltzy rubbish, an abomination of lazy screenplay vignettes and maudlin nonsense

The book and the stage play were, though, superb.

We proper Diaryists call it a window of opportunity. You were away on some jaunt, Cos was on a go slow, Vinnni was eating, Alex was playing his pianoforte, so I snuck in & nicked their audience. Gotta be done.

Like that, especially "maudlin".

Thanks Miss D. You know those puppies, who don't want to be taken for a walk, so they dig their heels in? Well, it may surprise you to know that I'm like that, the more pressure I get, the more stubborn, obdurate, & stupid I become. And every time I turn on the wireless, I get "War Horse" hype. They seem to do this annually, pick a film, & hype it to death. The Director - some famous chap, apparently - was on R4 yesterday, bla bla bla. It seems we will all be required to see the film & then burst into tears because it's so cute, & sad, & schmultzy. Sod that. But now you tell me it has lovely scenery & stuff. So many decisions......What did shock me, listening to the guys on the wireless rattling on, was how many horses died, or were killed, on "Active Service" in the War. (I assume WW1?). Which is tragic, very tragic. But then again, so was the loss of human life.Pray God we never do that again. How is the comedic career going?
Of course the statue in Park Lane http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4037873.stm that we drive past all the time is testament to the animals killed in war. There are some great walking tours in London that help you discover the stories behind what we take for granted, as I seem to spend more time in London these days I think a Sunday walking tour is on the cards.

Comedy going well so far - 1 promotor has given me 4 bookings over the next 6 weeks which is pretty good - and another one is sending me some dates for March.  Chuffed that I have been given a gig at their venue in Richmond - real feather in the cap that one for a newbie - so yes it's going ok. Thanks for the facebook LIKES yesterday. Sorry if that caused ructions. :-(

Today is a biggie for me - at 11.30 I sign my first commercial lease for the business in my own right. Previously I have always sublet so I have been without responsibility. Today that all changes and I am shit scared. 5 year lease, shop front, security grills, alarms - all my responsibility. It might not sound much to others but at a time when I wish i spent my days writing jokes and the evenings performing this is a big commitment. It's the right thing to do but it also means I have to be at work more than I am now because I will have a 'shop'. No nipping out during the day if I don't have a client. So say hello to the colonic clinic, 47 Adams Avenue, Northampton.  :-)

Ralph

Although I agree with your moor allerton comments they are very much struggling financially at the moment!

If the economy doesn't pick up within the next 4 years, I really fear one of the 4 north Leeds big courses will go pop! I imagine that they would be bought as they are all excellent, but my gut tells me MA would be first to feel the strain.

I would guesstimate that 70% of the members at Moor Allerton are Jewish and I would doubt they would allow the club to go under even if it were running at a loss. I'm sure they would subsidise it to the hilt. I'm not sure what would happen to that majority membership in the unlikely event that the club did fold though as Moortown, Sand Moor and Alwoodley do not have one Jewish member between them.

He hit the rock, then he drove the boat towards shore to save lives.  That is at least one of the versions of events I have read.

He is obviously not a complete hero on some of the other things I have read.

BUMP

You can see the route he took here in red.

But the captain is starting to look a bit less of a villain on the newsnight link in that story

Meanwhile, satellite tracking information given to the BBC by the shipping journal Lloyd's List Intelligence shows the Costa Concordia had sailed even closer to the island on a cruise last August.

Lloyd's List told the BBC that the vessel passed within 230m of the island on 14 August 2011 to mark La Notte di San Lorenzo - the night of the shooting stars festival on the island.

The route deviation on that occasion had apparently been authorised by Costa Crociere.

Lloyd's List describes that occasion as a "near miss" and says the ship's route would have been less than 200m away from the point of collision on Friday's voyage.

But Richard Meade, editor of Lloyd's List, said: "The company's account of what happened, of the rogue master [Capt Schettino] taking a bad decision, isn't quite as black and white as they presented originally.

"This ship took a very similar route only a few months previously and the master would have known that."

Apparntly, this advert is "going viral".

It completely whooshes me, but if you like Star Wars, Dogs, or Music, this is for you. For grown ups, & the more discerning, not so much. Tom will like it.

Nothing makes much sense on this whole story any more, & once the mob mentality gets on someone's case, I default to trying to support them.

However, would the facts you note, whilst being very unexpected (a "near miss" which was then authorised again?), surely, the relevance of how near it was to the shore needs to be seen in context of the tides? Low tide, no, high tide, yes? Captain Whatsit testified that "the water was too shallow". So if the tide was low this time, & high last time, it makes a difference to the correctness of his actions, & it was his responsibility to check that?

PS - You'll get me in trouble with Tom next door, he's claiming the scoopio on this story. But worry not, I need an Actuary or two on here.

I was younger...

I can name the team from that final at Wembley almost without thinking
Stepney, Brennan, Foulkes, Dunne, Stiles, Crerand,  Sadler, Charlton, Aston, Kidd, and of course the incomparable Best.
I remember the night as if it were yesterday. Watched on a small black&white tv with my dad :-)
Of the others, obviously Law and Herd are there but my anorak wearing days are long gone.

Dennis Law spoke at a sportsman's dinner I was at a few years ago. A fine line in self-deprecating dry wit. He missed the final due to injury, he hid his regrets well.

Remind me - what was the deal as to substitutes back then - if indeed they were allowed at all?

One - United had Jimmy Rimmer on the bench, he'd have been needed if Eusebio's late shot had been a little higher and hit Stepney in the face (or a little lower...)
