War Horse, urgh
Loved the battle scenses and WW1 re-creation. The rest of it is schmaltzy rubbish, an abomination of lazy screenplay vignettes and maudlin nonsense
The book and the stage play were, though, superb.
Yup, go with that. The WWI stuff was pleasing. When they cut Joey free from that nasty barbed wire stuff, Curtis wanted the Jerry to say "I have a cunning plan" but Spielberg wasn't having it

Loving this Diary as well as RED-DOG's
Shame all the conversation is so clever and grown up - leaving me little room to participate!

Which reminds me - I must Post my New Years Resolutions. 18 days in, & most remain intact. Almost.
Demba Ba done an interview with your lot over the New Year, I loved this part:
Interviewer : "Have you got a new years resolution for 2012"
Ba (insta replies) : "No"
Interviewer : "Oh, that was said very firmly, why ?"
Ba : "Because my resolutions are everyday, I just try everyday to be good with people"
Doubt I've ever heard that question answered so well, great philosophy to live by.
Like that a lot, Ray.
I'm the same with Christmas, it hacks me off, all this ritualised pressie giving, & I refuse to do it - I like to give pressies when least expected. This year was bad, I received a load of gifts, dozens, & I gave exactly one. But the rest of the year is payback time for me, & that's the fun part, the giving.
When do you move into the new place? Oh, & Malmaison rocks, really good. Enjoy, Mum too.
I kinda agree with you about Xmas but I do enjoy seeing how much the kids love it. Malmaison was great, best hotel in Newcastle ainec, moving into the new place tmoro. Not as swanky as yours but should be fun

those pics u posted earlier teeks were amazing....had to look up all 25 of them. Unbelievable to think that within the last 100 years poeple still lived like that (the first black student and the lynchings) and the vulture/strarving picture is too sad for words. I think we should just print some more money so everyone has enough, surely nuthin can go wrong with that
Thanks Jeff.
I really believe pictures have more impact than words, especially ones as powerful as those I Posted yesterday. I plan to Diary a lot more photos in 2012. One of my NYE's.
Print more money? That's called "QE" these days, as in "quantative easing", & a lot of that is going off at the moment, as countries grapple with debt, & so called kick-starting economies. Sadly, yes, it will all go wrong, & sooner than most think.
I read somewhere yesterday that Brazil is now loaning the IMF money. Thats "third world" Brazil as of a decade or two ago, now loaning money to the rich & powerful first world nations.
Stranger things have happened, but not many.
How you running? Any better? You playing that Omaha Fessie @ The Vic?
You'll be pleased to know, I'm sure, that Stu Rutter did an awesome job on 865 (your invite remains open, though!), & Stu returns tonight for the Thursday Show, half of which simulcasts onto Sky Sports.
I'm coming in later to meet him, & help him with some technical stuff (rest easy, I'm talking non-poker) as to how he handles himself front-of-camera. He is, I believe, immensely talented at it, once we remove one or two minor rough edges. Nothing would make me happier or more proud than for him to go on from there, he's a good man.
These guys are doing a decent job of collecting old pics and links to Edinburgh in the past. Some great stuff.

P.S. they have added some more pics of the old Princess Street station

I want a hat like this. How neat does that look? A little too raffish maybe?

The hatted gent is, of course, Ian Hislop. Not a man I'd much want to engage with in verbal battle, he's a bit too sharp, but I'm sure he is terrific company.
I looked him up today, as I have been following the Leveson Press Inquiry thing with interest, & Mr H made a typically comedic & aggressive appearance on the stand.
When he was first appointed as Editor of Private Eye, back in the 80's, two of the regular contributors, including the odious Nigel Dempster, lobbied the then Owner/Editor, the late Peter Cook, not to take Hislop on board. Cook ignored them, appointed Hislop, who then promptly sacked both his detractors on his first day in the job. That's called sending a message to the team, I think.
He has been ever-present on HIGNFY for over 20 years, & has never missed a single episode, which is some achievement. Proper pro.
He has a peculiar ancestry, his Dad was Scottish, his Mum a Channel Islander, & he was born in Wales. His Dad was a Civil Engineer, on projects all over the world, so he is well travelled, & very well educated too.
He is said to be the most sued person in Great Britain (awaits verification by Gatters), as a result of his Editorship at Private Eye. When he lost a damages case against Robert Maxwell, having accused him of being a crook, he announced, wiki states, "I have just paid a fat cheque to a fat Czech". Later, much later, it transpired that Maxwell was indeed as bent as a nine bob note.
He's almost an institution these days, right up there with Stephen Fry.

Maybe just me but I've always thought Ian Hislop has managed the rare feat of being able to come across as both posh and clever but not a complete prick.

Thanks Jon. I'm quite intimate with the area, I worked there for 30 years.

Also, is it just me or does it take other people longer to make a post itt compared to any other, any other thread I post in it's always instant but when I post on here it takes at least a few seconds to post it sometimes takes quite awhile ? Doesn't happen all the time but quite regularly.

That's because the server can't understand your posts.

Yes, but I'm not sure that the default for posh & clever people is to become an appendage.
I can lay claim to being 1 out of the 3, I believe.
