On Valentines day, last Tuesday, WSOP bracelet winner Jason Somerville posted wrote a blog, & stated he was gay. Vanessa excepted, he is almost the first high-profile poker player to out himself.
http://jcarver.badbeatscrew.com/thoughts-and-theory/real-talk/#
The reaction was interesting, the internet was buzzing, & the 2+2 Thread runs to 30+ pages & counting. It is, as ever with 2+2, a mixture of inane childishness & sheer genius.

Almost all the reaction was positive, but, as ever, with the internet, a few simple souls thought homosexuality was an excuse to have some sport, “ewwwwww”, & “do you play at the Four Queens?” sort of nonsense. I guess where there is the internet, there are simple, spotty, souls, sat in their back bedroom, making smartalec remarks, but fortunately, they are very much the minority.
could of been a worse reaction if it was a sportman rather than a gambler as those on teh religious right with all the bigotted hatred are not reaally going to frequent a poker website

One for Keefy Boy.
Danny Negranau, mentions the Jason story in his “VBlog” (for Tom, “VBlog = “Video Blog), but he really finds his stride when he starts to discuss Lederer, Ferguson, & Ray Bitar. He really cuts into the three of them, & advocates his comfort with Lederer & co being beaten with a baseball bat. He also descends into calling them “scumbags”. Helpful & constructive, not much.
Maybe he is just attention-whoring, but Danny, who I believe fulfils his role as a ‘stars Pro wonderfully, & is an example to all aspiring pros (whether we like him or not, which is not relevant) has overstepped the mark here. A guy in his position, advocating physical violence, is bang out of order in these circumstances. It’s only money.
The Lederer & Co rant starts at around 5.59.

I chose this photo especially for Keith. Nice one, eh?

It would not surprise me at all. Short memory & attention span ftw. We have seen it plenty of times in poker, & on blonde, down the years.
If, say, Lederer opened an online poker site tomorrow with a $1,000 Weclome Bonus & 50% rakeback he'd be knocked over in the rush - I absolutely guarantee.
We are a forgiving crowd. Or greedy.

Given that Russ Hamilton who committed a far worse crime in theory than Lederer, Ferguson et al plays cash daily in South Florida casinos (and is fairly well liked from what I can see) I frequent I would be somewhat surprised if they didn't.

mmmm - I'm not sure on this one, I think the points DN makes in his blog is perfectly valid, (obviously the baseball bat to the nuts is a stupid thing to say but w/e) whereas it doesn't appear that Lederer/Ferguson/Bitar set out to deliberately defraud anyone, there actions at the end of it all were nothing but fraudulent, and them hiding away refusing to answer questions when they've sunk $300m+ of poker communities money, and put a huge dent in the reputation of our industry is pretty much unforgivable.
I think, the russ hamilton scandal was certainly a worse crime as he set out deliberatley to cheat people, however (and this isn't right but how it is i think) he cheater far far fewer people for a lot less money, so scorn for him is no where near as widespread as it is for the big FTP 3. The only way we'll be seeing those guys in a live tournament again will be several years after everyone gets 100% of their money back, and only if those 3 have been seen to be playing an active role in helping repay.
If GBP buys FTP out them and the DOJ get player funds back even in full I still think there is no way public opinion can ease on them, at the moment it seems that they are being evasive and attempting to hide there own money, which would be seen as an attempt to hold back the repayment of players, combine this with there refusal to even issue a single word statement, sitting back and letting people paid a lot less money and with a lot less responsible sadle a lot of heat on their behalf.
No way back for them, if they open a site with a 1000% deposit bonus imo. I certainly wouldn't touch it, and no1 i coach or stake would be going anywhere near it.

Meh, I'm with tikay on this one. The public reaction to the UB scandal was unreal. Did the traffic even drop at all? And as soon as all the CHEATED players were refunded half of them were playing on the site again degening it up with 'free' money.
Plus don't forget Vegas (and other) games are sometimes built on fish whose source of money is shall we say dubious? Morality and ethics usually takes a back seat when money wants to drive.

Jason Somerville is a cool guy he has been a huge contributor to the somethingawful (Not work safe many of the sections) forums for ages and is hero worshipped there, being one of the lads. Not much reaction to him coming out, kinda non news. He has a great personality and spent loads of time answering questions etc so thats all that matters.

Can only hope that in the future people won't even have to go to the need of making an announcement on the issue. If your a homosexual, that's your choice and people should respect it.
As crudely as it was written, I fully agree with the post below that was on the first page.
