What did it say on the bell?

The bell is very famous, Tom, it said.....

Presented to

Locomotive King George V
by the
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company
in commemoration of its
centenary celebration
September 24 - October 15, 1927

And here's the thing.

When the loco was sent to America for the celebration, in 1927, the Great Western Region Railway sent their own crew - can't be having Yanks touching a piece of GWR kit. They all sailed across the Atlantic in a Liner, how wonderful that must have been.

So they sent a Driver, a Fireman, two engineers, and a general loco-cleaner, for cleaning out the boiler etc.

The Fireman was a chap from Old Oak Common Depot (Shed Code 81a) near Paddington. His name was Albert Angell.

Many years later, after he had been promoted from Fireman to Driver (that was the usual way of things), he was given a new Fireman, fresh to the footplate. His name was Jimmy Kendall, who was later to become my Dad.

Albert had a Daughter, Elsie, and after Dad's wife Grace (my Mum) died, Dad married Elsie, (Albert's daughter) & so my sister & I had a new Mum.

So Albert Angell, who was THE most wonderful chap, became my other Grandad.

It'd be rather nice to say "& they all lived happily after", but it did not quite work out like that.

Time to lighten the mood after that, I think.

What better way than a photo of the Fens Finest, Chompy? He helps me out on the Tikay Tips thread, he's given us 327 tips so far, & his first ever winner is expected any day.

And here's a Blog I wrote this morning, entitled "Too Clever by Half".

Please note it is aimed at a very different market to blonde, but you can have a lol at my lol-ness, so it is not a complete waste.

I guarantee it is 100% Spam Free. *

* Except the last paragraph.

This is the shrewdest man on Blonde. Saw he'm yesterday, or more accurately half his back, the other half was already through the double doors, mid-flounce.

Incredibly superstitious for such a shrewd dude, played reasonable golf on Thursday so didn't change his trousers for poker last night.

Handshakers at 1am! Htf is one supposed to flounce properly when a meerkat and RUDonking try for shakes?

Epic table last night, mainly focusses on the Harry Worth lookalike playing DC. Didn't know who Harry Worth was until yesterday.

So glad it was what you are after so here is the link again as requested.

http://www.swindonweb.com/index.asp?m=8&s=116&ss=344

It's amazing what you can do with google. Just entered " pictures of bloke who looks like Tikay from the telly driving a train with the queen in Swindon" and Bob's your uncle. The hardest part was overcoming the disinformation provided.

Unbelievable find hector, thank you. I think AndrewT &/or bongo found some stuff about my Dad a few years ago, but that is the bees knees.

In the video, that is my Dad at about 3.32, on the footplate, far left.

The photo on that Web Page is EXACTLY the photo I was looking for - my Dad is the chap on the left as we look.

I cannot tell you what this means. Dad has been gone for around 35 years now, & when he died, it changed my life completely.

I guess none of this makes much sense except to those who have lost their Dad. To those who have, they'll understand completely.

I guess that photo must be around 60 years old.

This made me re-look at the British Pathe website and this video which has my Great Great Uncle in has been re-mastered/cleaned up or something because when I saw it before it didn't have sound
http://www.britishpathe.com/video/sir-winston-gets-the-winkle

It hasn't quite got the same kind of emotional resonance but I think this kind of connection of being able to actually hear what my grandmother's uncle sounded like is a pretty great reflection on the benefits of technology  Smiley

The one with the microphone is my great great uncle, the one next to Churchill in the light uniform is Monty

These type of posts are absolute gold and my fav bit about blonde. I like "yup sounds like value. Fred will have a tenner on" but these stories just move you emotionally. Penny for your memoirs Smiley

I've got to say these nostalgia moments really make my day. Thanks especially to John MW for the Pathe News link. It reminded me that my dad, who is still alive, always talked about how a he used to work in a shoe shop in London in the 1960's. This shoe shop was synominous with the winklepicker craze and used to make these shoes for a variety of celebrities of the day including the likes of Alan Wicker, Adam Faith and many more. This shoe shop featured on a Pathe News clip in 1960 and I've just found it.

This is a still from the clip of him putting the finishing polish to the shoes. He must have been about 21.

Lol yes I know. These just looked more like women's shoes than the traditional men's ones I recall.
Went to the beach with family friends this week and the wife and her mate could not stop laughing at the fact I looked like a Chinese cockle picker Smiley
