Have you ever done a tour of the Northern France/Belgium trenches/war memorials/graveyards tikay?

Much the same feeling, an eerie calm no matter how many people there

Unbelievably poignant.

No, never. I'm not sure I could face it, to be honest.

I was fortunate enough to win a competition when I was 16 in a local paper and the prize - owing to the release of Saving Private Ryan, was to go to see the Normandy beaches.

Completely took my breath away. We speak of how precious life is and you stand in the midst of thousands and thousands of white crosses (and the odd star of David).

Lyndsey's mum lives in Normandy and we go over and visit occasionally.  Should really sort out a trip to see this.

I was scanning USA websites for news on Hurricane Sandy. It's hard to get a proper handle on how serious it is, or may be, but it's certainly a whopping news event.

Anyway, mid-scan, I chanced upon this.

Pictures beat words, all day & night.

I have this planned in 2013..A company wants me to go and give my thoughts (he saw my blog and was interested in a younger persons views on it) along with lots of photos of past and present from some famous trenches/battles from WW1/WW2. I must say I am more interested in the WW1 stuff though esp. the Somme (3 of my great uncles all go married in Leeds on the Friday and plodded off to the Somme the week after and died, my great aunts all remained widows the rest of their lives all living together in Beeston until they all died).

My nephew in Harrogate who is 14 and had no previous interest in WW1/2 went on a school trip around some of the historical places in Europe and he came back an changed person, he is amazed and totally immersed into battles, books, movies about the famous battles now. I am so proud of him!

Wow. Just a throwaway line, but such impact. Nobody can imagine the pain & sacrifice behind those lines.

Yeah its crazy stuff, my Dad told me all about them and the ladies growing up in Leeds in the 20s without husbands. This sadly was not unique, villages where the whole lot of men signed up for WW1 simply didn't return, leaving the villages with 95% women after the War. One thing you notice about going around the countryside is the amount of memorials you see listing the men that died in the WW1/2. A generation lost.

Love stuff like that. My cousin has learning difficulties but he has achieved lots more than many so called 'normal' people I know.

This is my own personal all time favourite story of someone overcoming this kind of adversity, why they didn't give him a chance to play sooner I have no idea:

Unbvelievable!

I'm sure I'm going funny in the head with old age, but when he came on, & everyone stood & cheered, I was welling up.

There's a whole lot of human kindness around.

That is possibly my favourite YouTube video. This one is a close second.

Man called Guy Goma goes to the BBC for a job interview, at the same time a man called Guy Humey arrives to do an on screen interview about Apple and the music industry. What could possibly go wrong?

The most wonderful part of this is that there would have been plenty of people watching who didn't realise the error. We are completely used to not understanding the answer or seeing someone avoid answering questions.

Don't think they'd need to photoshop - Bull Sharks are known for feeding in shallow water, have been spotted in main streets in Australia during floods and have even been found hundreds of miles up rivers (Mississippi, Zambezi, Amazon & Ganges to name a few). They're also quite aggressive, I'd be staying put there till the waters subsided.
