tikay the viewing platform on the Shard opened last week

Spectacular views for 30 miles etc etc

Without googling, guess how much it costs per person to be allowed up there?

What would you consider "value for money" for the experience?

No need to google, I already tried to book a ticket. £24.95.

Value for money? Yes. At what max price? Can't even guess.

I think the perspective it would give on London, views none of us have ever seen, would be memories for a lifetime. Especially with my photographic skills.

ADD to Bucket List.

Have a view of this.....

Meh, on a good day I can climb Queensbury hill for nothing, and see Ben Lomond in the Highlands, the Lake District, the Irish coast & Arran.

Quick quiz - where on earth can you see the most of the earth from?

As always, Rod, you put things in such great perspective.

I still intend to do the Shard thing though, the building is iconic, & can be seen from all over London. Will take my camera, too.

Queensberry Hill, meanwhile, is different gravy. Another one for the Bucket List.

I've done the top of Snowdon a few times and am told that on a clear day you can see The Lake District, South Wales and Ireland from the peak.

I have to take the word of those lucky few who have been there on clear days, it was hard to see the roof of the cafe from the peak the first time, and not much better on subsequent visits.

I had the same problem on Snowdon, I have been there 5 or 6 times, but never on a clear day.

When I do the Shard, it will need to be a clear day or it will be a waste of time.

I often used to visit a place called Crich Stand, in Derbyshire (only 20 minutes from DTD), from where it is said that five Counties can be seen on a clear day.

Crich Stand is a real oddity, almost a folly.

It it a sort of lighthouse sticky-up thingy perched atop the highest hill for miles around. It is actually a War Memorial, to the Foresters Regiment. It's perfectly wonderful & dignified.

Over 11,000 Sherwood Foresters died in the Great War, & the entire Regiment originated from Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire.

11,000

Tough to imagine that, 11,000 men died from just two counties of England.

I'm sure that all of those soldiers being killed must have a direct correlation to Nottingham's legendary ratio of two women for every man.

Was thinking the same.  Maybe somewhere like South Africa, Peru or Scunthorpe?

the majority of the locals are high and the general morale of the town is flat. We can see Lincoln Cathedral on a good day tho.

Edit: well over 40 miles away

The Empire State Building charge $25 and I would say that is far more value for money than the Shard and far more interesting things to view imo

I doubt there would be many clear days in London where you would get a clear view like the one advertised.

Tikay , if you haven't visited New York I suggest you do so, I think you would love it.

Its my favourite city in the world that I have been fortunate enough to visit.

No, never been there Craig. I would like to, but it is not top of my list.

So many things to do.......

You back in India now? Going OK?

I saw The Bandit on Friday, asked him about the twins, they are 2 years old now. Who'd have thunk? He seems so relaxed & happy now, too.

I've not seen Ash Pervais for years, what is he up to these days?

I think the myth comes more from the Nottingham lace industry when there were over 110,000 women working in Nottingham in the 1860's

Antarctica is flat, high up and, because the Earth is a slightly flattened sphere, the horizon is a bit further away at the poles than it is elsewhere, so maybe that's it?

We can say oblate spheroid here. I like your logic.

Hi Tikay,
I can see this beauty from my garden.
It was built in honour of the Duke of Wellington after his victory in the battle of Waterloo.
