I still don't really get the big kerfuffle about the whole personalised number plates thing

I think people who have them are tossers.

That doesn't actually make them tossers - I am not the final arbiter (although I probably should be!)

I could never get so heated or riled up about another persons views as some people seemed to get about my opinion of personalised number plates.

It is a forum Keith, & some folks can get ever so het up about THE most minor things. They must have had very dull lives I guess.

I actually found it surprising, & disappointing, that you disliked Sir Ian Botham. Why so? I admire him so very much.

I promise you it does not upset me one bit though! We are all so different, & that is just fine. I honestly don't give a toss whether you like him or not, but I am interested in why.

Did you see "Allotment Wars" last week? People getting EVER so uppity about how big there turnips grew. You'd better believe that.

In general I dislike people with big egos.

Botham has just about the biggest ego going and added to that when he commentates there always seems to be an agenda - he slants his views for or against people depending on whether they are his pals or not.

Good cricketer for sure, but perhaps not as good as he (or the public) thinks he was.

His whole career is defined by one (admittedly amazing) performance. There were lots of moderate showings and lots of dissent to those in command of him when decisions he didn't like were taken.

In poker, sport and life I like people who get it quietly.

Teeks if the bank indeed sees fit to lend me a chunk of cash I may be about to move almost next door to the Elm Grove allotments in Walton-on-Thames.

Would I be right in thinking you have an allotment yourself? Also do you happen to know anything about these specific ones?

I lolled.

Oh come on!

You have to love stuff of this quality.

Elm Grove Allotments, Walton on Thames? No, sorry, I'm not familiar with them, though I go into Walton almost daily, I love the place.

I have an allotment?

Err, well, umm, no, not technically, no. Well no, not at all really. When I say on Fred, as I often do, that I have to go "tend the allotment", it is a euphemism......

Now I feel SO bad. I assumed nobody believed I meant it literally. Ugh. I am pretty sure nobody else bought that. If they did, I apologise.

Let's change the subject. Did you know that there is a brand new bridge, over the magnificent river, at Walton?

Here you go, this is the before & after.

Incidentally, the black car in the foreground of the second photo is the very same model as my first ever car - a "Sit Up & Beg" Ford Prefect. £45 it cost me.

Ah, it would appear I had been whoosed on the subject. Worse still, Tom appears to have thought I was going for the 'old man allotment jibe' to you....when in fact I was being entirely sincere in my question. Tom - sorry to let you down!

I did not 'know' that re: the bridge, or at least, I am yet to witness it with my own eyes, though I may remember reading something to the effect.

Anyway, if all goes to plan (and I haven't put the mockers on in discussing it), Walton shall become home soon Smiley

I could not agree more. My wife bought me one for my 40th. GG 52 LAY or something like that with gee gees and lay at the end. She even printed the plates and wrapped em up.

I had only been with her 21 years and she never knew I subconsciously label anyone with a personal plate a bell end. Needless to say she got most of her cash back and sold the number on, but the plates turn up every now and again when I am looking for something else and always give us a giggle.

Think you have an interest in containers and ships - this video is of containers being unloaded from a ship at Rotterdam

http://youtu.be/nk72q801ACw

Incred, thank you.

How did you happen across that? Do you have an interest in such matters? If so, why, is it work-related?

Why does the Ship change sides, to another unloading dock halfway through?

Those beauties can transport unbelievable amounts of cargo, in TFE's (get the lingo?), unload & reload in double quick time.

It was not always so....

Nothing to do with work, it was just linked in an economics blog I read.

It linked to this blog http://jalopnik.com/watching-the-ms-renata-deliver-cargo-around-rotterdam-i-1099566299 which has some detail and added comments.

Thanks Rod, but oh my, how awful is that?

Interestingly, I travelled on the new District Line stock on Saturday (Post incoming, soon), from Richmond to Hammersmith, which really impressed me greatly.

I was never a fan of the Routemaster as such, my original love affair with buses began with the RT, & RTL. Proper buses them.

Ed may be interested actually, if he is moving to Walton on Thames, as the London Bus Musuem is just around the corner, in Brooklands, which is in nearby Weybridge. A wonderful place to spend a Saturday, assuming gardening duties do not beckon.

Here we have a Routemaster alongside an RTL. No comparision. As for that new thing, just ugh.
