Thanks DimTom, & others.

This will make no sense tro anyone.......but I actually wrorte the thing in several parts, then C & P it here. And I missed one part! For the purpose of continuity & completeness, I'm going to Post the missing part shortly, for no other reason than that I need to keep it all in one place, as I'm assembling a series of little anecdotes for future use elsewhere.

The missing part. Ignore, it will make no sense at all out of context, but I need to keep it all together.

This was just after Rose arrived in America.

Almost immediately she falls pregnant. Fancy that. Hubbies name was Isadore, & soon a daughter was born, Frances.

None of them spoke a word of English.

Eventually, 2 years later, they move to Omaha, Nebraska, as they yearned the company of Russian & Yiddish speaking friends. Over 30,000 Russian immigrants loved in Omaha. All good now, she has a home at last.

Isadore opens a pawnshop, Rose stays at home. Three more kids follow, 2 girlies & a lad.

Bit by bit, she saves a little money, & sends $50 a time back to Russia, to finance bringing the rest of her brothers & sisters, & other relatives, to America. One by one, 10 of them came across.

By now Isdadore’s pawnshop was not doing so good. Bankruptcy threatened. A problem? Not to Rose.

She takes over the business, & starts selling clothes. Cheap. Buys stuff here & there, sells it for 10% more.

She got hold of a job lot of suits, & advertised that she could clothe a man for less than $5. She advertises this by delivering flyers by hand to 10,000 houses in Omaha.

The suits fly off the shelf, & they take $800 in one day – more than the store took in the entire preceding 12 months.

Boom!

More of this, & she’s running good now. Soon she is selling clothes, jewelry, & furniture. Trouble looms though. Wholesalers refuse to sell to her, because she is undercutting established businesses. Damn you all she says, I’ll undercut the lot of you.

The wholesalers won’t deal with her now, so she borrowed $2,000 & trotted off to Chicago, to buy up job lots.

A step too far this time, & she does not sell the stuff quick enough, so the bailiffs come knocking.

So she sold all the contents of their house, to pay off the bailiff.

Eventually, she resold the gear from Chicago, & made $200 profit. A HUGE sum in those days.

So she decided to open a furniture store in Nebraska.

The Nebraska Furniture Mart was born.

Happy 90th Birthday, Radio Times.

It used to be published on a Friday, back in the day, & cost 3d. We looked forward to it, it was a big thing. Print magazines then consisted of Womans Own, Womans Weekly, Womens Realm, Radio Times, & a handful of comiics - Beano, Dandy, Eagle.

Christmas was not Christmas without the Radio Times Bumper Xmas edition, & we all fought over reading it.

In the eighties its circulation was 11 million, these days it is 800,000, & still falling. In the 80's, another rival emerged - TV Times. One for BBC, the other for commercial TV as we then called it.

Now it cost £1.40, & is no longer owned by the BBC.

When the BBC used to advertise it on BBC1, the other stations took out a court order, saying it was wrong to use the monopoly that way. So the Beeb added a rider, from which derived an expression still in use today - other magazines are available

The world has changed, & the print version will soon disappear, & there an an App now I believe.

Lord Reith would be aghast.

You can't wipe your arse on an App.

You'll not believe this, but Toilet Rolls were only for posh peeps then, & newspapers were used for toilet paper. The Radio Times used thicker paper, so was a bit of a luxury. Sit down, have a read mid-evacuation, tear it up & use it. Proper time-efficient, that.

We knew the good from the bad, too. No good using Womens Own, it was glossy. Glossy was no good, it slid all over the place.

You boys with Kleenex Quilted don't know how lucky you are. Quilted toilet tissue, wtf?

Dont you start slagging off quilted 3 ply, your fans will leave you in droves.  Says a lot for a product when its last remaining use is for people to wipe their arse on.  I will not start on toilet humour, I will not start on toilet humour, I will not start on toilet humour, I will not start on toilet humour, I will not start on toilet humour!!!!!

And anyway, apps for that are in the pipeline.  Im sure I've heard loads of people saying, "You'll soon be able to get an app that wipes your arse for you!"

The Radio times was a staple at home growing up. I am just about old enough to remember buying the tv times as well for ITV and Channel 4 programmes, quite ridiculous looking back now.

As you say the Christmas ones were of special interest that used to do a fortnight instead of a week iirc.

What about that "bronco" loo-roll that we used to get at school.

It was like wiping your arse with grease-proof paper.

Me too, would read through it all to what films etc were on over crimbo. Used to fold the radio times & tv times together in a certain way so that the same days pages on each were together!

I came across this today

It was news to me, this juxtaposition of greyhound/speedway track with football ground. Both have gone now...

Know which it is?
