It was only 200 years ago that the USA doubled in size, thanks to Napoleon. He'd come to power in 1799 and wanted to fund yet more wars in Europe but was getting short of cash.
France owned the middle third of the US, then known as Louisiana (for King Louis - not the orangutan). So desperate was he - perhaps so driven by the greed of conquering all of Europe - that he sold that entire strip of land...(the green bit)
...for $15m. That's just 3 cents an acre!
I'm sure I've mentioned this before but it'll never cease to amaze me. Could you imagine if Napoleon had been exiled before then or the USA had got greedy and refused to buy? That whole bit would be a French territory.
Is that really true?
If so, incredible, abso amazing.
How did they come to buy it in the first place? Thought we were there before them?

It really is quite a story. There are probably all sorts of similar happenings across history.

Grandad Angell was telling me the story one day of when a German WWII bomb hit his house in Shepherds Bush, landed smack in the coal cellar & the house collapsed, luckily with no fatalities, but they lost all their posessions, not to mention the home they had lived in all their life.
"Ooh, I was really cross
" he said. Proper cross, I imagine. Almost annoyed, like.
Love this.

I've just managed to convince myself TV is going to have to stop because the last possible show that could be invented and put on mainstream telly is now on.
Not only that but it isn't on channel five and it doesn't feature the word 'Celebrity'. The info button on my remote tells me:
Sex Box, Channel 4
Sex themed discussion show. Couples describe their experiences with the programme's host, Mariella Frostrup, in front of a studio audience and with a panel of experts
.
If I may be so bold as to summarise what this means:
1. A couple has sex in a box in the studio
2. The couple finishes doing the sex thing
3. The couple leaves the box (this is different to number 2)
4. The couple immediately is met by the woman who presents the Hay on Wye literature festival coverage on Sky Arts, who thrusts a microphone into their ruddied faces and asks how it went
5. A panel of experts - I expect they will be called sexologists or sexperts or something equally repugnant - analyses why the girl is looking at her watch and the bloke is crying
I mean - and I do really mean - wtf?
They'll be showing roulette for two hours next.

Watching other people watch TV, but you don't get to see what they are seeing; you just watch their reactions and that passes for entertainment?
This is why terrestrial TV is going down the pan. Never get something like that on sky

No, but seriously, how does this gutter wash get commissioned? It isn't there to be informative, really, any more than The Word was about music or Mock the Week is about political debate.

In fact, go on 4 on demand, they have the first two of this series still. The Brighton gays and posh couple from kent that always seem pissed are superb. The rest are merely very good.
If you don't like it, you can be me a nandos next time I'm up. If you do like it, then can buy me a nandos next time I'm up.
