I was conned into watching that bloody film recently by a young lady of my acquaintance.  All wrong, there were very few planes, trains or cars. I shall never trust her again.

Do you watch films? Of all the many topics discussed here, I'm not sure I have ever heard you really discuss the flicks.

This particular one is amongst my all time favourites. Back in the days of VHS we must have rented it 10 times as a family. I wonder, however, how well it is recieved today, by someone who doesn't have the added incentive to like it that is nostalgia.

Not really.

To save questions, I'll try & list EVERY film I have ever seen in my life. If I go to my grave never seeing one more film, I'll die happily.

I don't object to others watching film after film, but its just not my bag.

At the cinema, where I was, as a child, sort of forced to go......

The Titfield Thunderbolt, 1953

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Titfield_Thunderbolt

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

The King & I

The Sound of Music

Bambi

As an adolescent or later, at the cinema.....

Jaws

Jurassic Park

A Night to Remember. (This was the real, proper, film about the sinking of the Titanic),

Last Tango in Paris

For "Cinema" films, that's it. I don't remember a thing about any of them, except A Night to Remember, which I much enjoyed, & was why I railed so much about the recent & utterly pap "Titanic". .

On Casettes, DVD's & TV, I've seen....

Heidi. (Every bloody Christmas until the age of 16). I cried every time.

All the Godfather films

Once Upon a Time in America

Goodfellas

Pulp Fiction

Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.

Snatch

I may have forgotten one or two, but that's about it.

The last 5 films I listed I watch over & over again, maybe 20 times each. Easily pleased, eh?

On TV these days, I only watch Sport, or stuff in the "Documentary" section of Sky TV.

When there is nothing of interest on TV, I read my books. Books are the best thing ever.

We should probably start a 'flicks for tikat' thread.

While I concur that a good book >>>>>>>>>>>>>>good film, he is probably missing out on so many great experiences.

I would have thought a good 3D film at an iMax would have been right up his street

Two more tragic 'golfers'

Good God.

One does not have his shirt tucked in, the other has his cap on arse-about.

Neither would get on any decent course dressed like that.

Disgraceful, a true embarrassment.

I think not. 3D films? Good grief.

I doubt I'll ever lose my affection for books, over & above everything else.

In my entire life, I doubt there have been a hundred days when I have not read a book for at least 20 minutes. They are my friends, I re-visit them again & again, & I get endless pleasure from them, & they never cause me aggro, worry or stress.

I keep thinking about one of those Kindle things, but it's not the same, is it? The only advantage, I suupose, is that the Kindle is small & light.

I have a business Meeting up in London today, so need to jump a train. Two trains each way there & back, 2 hours reading a book, & the Meeting is at the place below....how good does life get?

Shares in British bookmaker Ladbrokes rose sharply on Wednesday and continue to climb following an investor purchasing 21.8 million shares at 170p, worth £37.1 million.

As the amount of shares purchased were under the 3 percent disclosure limit – a publically listed company has to disclose information of any shareholder who holds 3 percent of the company – the details of the investor remain a mystery, but sources in the city suggest it is Playtech founder Teddy Sagi.

Ladbrokes hired Playtech earlier this year to aid in the overhaul of its digital betting business, an area of Ladbrokes that is massively underperforming and is the main cause of at least four profit warnings in the past 18 months. Two weeks ago, Ladbrokes CEO Richard Glynn caused an uproar among company shareholders when he revealed profits stemming from the group’s digital division would be up to £17.5 million lower than expected this year.

Analysts do not think a takeover bid from Playtech is imminent, but have not ruled it out. Ladbrokes’ current share price values the company at £1,731.66 million, almost £500 million less than Playtech’s current market capitalisation.

Playtech is cash-rich at present, having sold its 29 percent stake in William Hill Online in April for £424 million, five years after acquiring that stake for £170 million. The company has already bought PokerStrategy.com for €38.3 million and could see Ladbrokes as the perfect company to invest in next.

The failings at Ladbrokes have not gone unnoticed in the investment world and there are rumours circulating of a bid for the company from CVC Capital, who you may recall purchased a 75 percent stake in online payment processor Skrill in August and were cited as possible buyers of Betfair for $1.5 billion in May.

At time of writing, Ladbrokes shares have risen 4.84% on Thursday to 188.50p while Playtech’s have risen 1.25% to 727.50p.

Hope springs eternal......

Fingers crossed, but I think the Business is too far gone. Once a Businesses reputation is destroyed, it is very hard to recover it. And they are YEARS behind, the Industry is so competitive now, & moves so fast.

Do you know they still dont have a Common Wallet? I still have to transfer money around between their Poker site & their Sports Betting Site? How old hat is that?

Playtech would be a good buyer, CVC not so much. I guess CVC would break it up into component parts & try to flog them, but that's the wrong way for a gaming Site these days, they need to be integrated, so money flows (easily....) between each "arm".

Anyone heard, or experienced knowing someone with an ailment known as "BPD"?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borderline_personality_disorder

I was watching NFL last night, & a comment was made about a chap called Brandon Marshall, so I went googling.

It seems he is a high profile sufferer. Am struggling a bit to comprehend it.

Anyway, Brandon has been a bit naughty down the years, but - legitimately - it is all down to BDP. Who'd have thunk?

Mr Wiki says.....

According to Orlando-Orange County public records (case 48-2004-MM-012392-O), on Halloween 2004, while a student at UCF, Marshall was arrested in Orlando on charges of assault on a law enforcement officer, refusal to obey, disorderly conduct, and resisting an officer.

On January 1, 2007, Marshall was present at The Shelter, a nightclub in Denver, Colorado, along with teammates Javon Walker and Darrent Williams. The trio was attending a birthday party held for and by New York Knicks forward Kenyon Martin. As the players were leaving the club in a limousine, Williams was fatally shot in the neck after an unknown assailant opened fire on the vehicle. Willie Clark was later charged with the murder. Walker has stated in interviews that the shooter was likely a nightclub patron whose motive was retaliation after being involved in an altercation with Marshall's cousin earlier that night.

On March 26, 2007, Marshall was arrested in the Highlands Ranch suburb of Denver on suspicion of domestic violence after his girlfriend reported that following a domestic dispute, Marshall prevented a taxi she was in from leaving his house. Charges from the incident were later dismissed on May 25, 2007, after Marshall completed anger management counseling.

In the early morning of October 22, 2007, Marshall was arrested in the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area at the intersection of 14th and Blake St. for driving under the influence of alcohol. A trial was scheduled for September 16, but Marshall instead agreed to a plea bargain four days earlier; he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of driving while ability impaired. He was sentenced to one-year probation and 24 hours of community service.

On June 12, 2008, Marshall was ticketed for an illegal lane change, then found to be without his license and proof of insurance. The case was eventually dropped as part of a plea bargain for the October 22, 2007 driving incident involving alcohol.

A September 17, 2008 article on CompleteColorado.com stated that the solicitor's office in Fulton County, Georgia filed misdemeanor battery charges on September 10 for an alleged incident on March 4, 2008, in Atlanta, Georgia. Marshall was booked on March 6, then released the next day after posting a $1,000 cash bond. The case was assigned to Judge John Mather in Georgia state court. On August 14, 2009, a jury in Atlanta found Marshall not guilty.

On March 1, 2009, Marshall was arrested in Atlanta for disorderly conduct after allegedly being involved in a fight with his fiancee, Michi Nogami-Campbell. Marshall was released on a $300 bond. The charges were dropped the following day.

On April 23, 2011, Marshall was stabbed near his stomach by his wife, Michi Nogami-Marshall. He was taken to a hospital and was released two days later. He has since made a full recovery.

It was later revealed by police that Marshall's wife did make a brief 911 call, but it only described an unspecified emergency and no mention of a stabbing ever took place. She is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and is free on $7,500 bail.

In a South Florida Sun-Sentinel article published on July 30, 2011, it was revealed that Marshall was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder at Boston's McLean Hospital after his incident with Nogami-Campbell. He is currently pursuing treatment for his mental illness and filming a documentary about his struggle.

On early Sunday, March 11, 2012, two days before his trade to the Bears, Marshall was accused of hitting a woman in the face at a New York club and being involved in a melee. The New York Post stated that Marshall, his wife and some friends were at Marquee when a brawl ensued, and Marshall punched the woman below her left eye, although he may have been attempting to hit the woman's friends. The investigation later ended after a lack of evidence of Marshall's role in the incident

Probably best not to argue with him.

I do worry I am turning into you. I love my little worky trips to London, not because of the bright lights of the big city, but because it means I have a guaranteed four hours of reading on the train (two there, two back, three on Sundays).

Regarding Kindles, I still have not made my mind up. They are so convenient, and its amazing I can go 'click' and have the book right there and then. But I am infinitely more likely to finish a paper book, I like the feeling of accomplishment looking at an almost complete book.

Here is an interesting nugget for you. Being in the old book game myself, in 2011 and the first half of 2012 our book sales were 2 ebook sales for every 1 softcover, but in the second half of 2012 and all of 2013, its gone the opposite way. It's partly because we have more people selling the softcover, but given 99% of our sales are through Amazon anyway, it does suggest that paper books are not totally dead yet (I'm sure Amazons own sample of billions of sales probably suggests otherwise of course).

When we changed to digital photography, lots of people wanted to cling to the old 35mm film method. I'm told some still do.
