A myriad of recreational options is not a "demand" on time, it's just we have so many more varieties of time to spend on leisure pursuits these days. Work is a demand on time, girlie or wifey matters is a demand on time, sleeping is a demand on time. We MUST do them.

We are, generally, less patient.

I think part of it is about participation or watching. If you playing in a game then generally the longer it goes on the better, yesterday we had a lad at football asking if we could play 20 minutes extra time and then announce that he wanted to carry on playing all day. I think if he was watching and not playing you have a maximum period of time that he would be prepared to watch before he wants to do something else.  

I also think there are more influences to divert people these days but the main reason I don't play golf any more is that with a young family can I really justify spending 4-5 hours of the weekend on my own and not with the kids. Poker can of course take the same amount of time but generally it is at night and therefore has less of an impact.

There was some research recently that looked at the length of You Tube videos measured against how many people clicked them. Sub-3 minute appears to be easily the most popular. I may not be typical, but if a You Tube Vid is more than 3 minutes duration, I never open it, except if it is music of course. 

I was looking at my "Most-Viewed" Music Vids the other day, as part of my sort of personal "review of my year" on my Birthday. "Eclectic" would be fair. If anyone went for the trifecta, the odds would be aboiut a zillion to one.

Based on my sons usage 20min plus you tube clips are very popular if they relate to some bloke showing what he does on Minecraft!!! it appears to be almost more popular than actually playing the game for kids of a certain age! The only times I have ever used you tube is to show my kids some quality music.

I'd say the reason we are more impatient now than we used to be isn't because life is more demanding now but because pretty much everything is more accessible now than in the past. The Internet, Mobile Phones, Technology advancements etc etc means we just aren't willing to wait for things anymore, because we don't have to. That seeps through into peoples overall mentalities resulting in being more impatient than we used to be.

One thing I am increasingly start to think is that the fact that we can all access google in our pockets and answer pretty much ANYTHING within 30 seconds of it being posed, is actually a bad thing. Yes we can quickly recall what year Roy Orbison died or the name of the actor who played Ralph from Happy Days, but at a cost. It's made us really impatient when we don't know something and probably has caused us to lose our sense of wonder. It also likely means we are losing a vital component in learning, because we no longer make mistakes then get better, we jump right to the answer.

Don't you think mobile phones and internet make life more demanding Ray? Before mobiles I could leave work and hit the golf course for 4 hours without a care in the world or any interruption. Now when I'm on the course the phone rings about a thousand times, text messages, facebook stuff. Last time I played the Brabazon my boss called just as I kicked off saying there was an emergency at work forcing me to rush off the course, gg day off, gg £130.

Tikay neatly tries to seperate work from leisure pursuits but stuff like mobile phones mean that simply isn't the case any longer. Mobiles have resulted in work and leisure merging into one with lots of grey areas. If you're in any position of responsibility not answering your work phone on your day off is seen as neglectful and personally I would feel guilty. So Tony, if work is a demand on your time as you state, and you accept that modern technology means that work can more easily encroach into leisure time, then life these days must be more time demanding. And don't tell me when you have a gazillion pm's to answer you don't see that as time demanding.

And don't get me started on Sundays. When I was a kid there were tumbleweeds blowing down my street on a Sunday and you couldn't even buy some gravy for Sunday lunch cos everywhere was closed. Now Sunday is one of the busiest days of the week and loads of people work on the traditional day of rest. People are infinitely more accessible due to technonolgy these days, and we have an extra working day in the week innit, hence life is more demanding.

Hey Marky, as I said if you're in a position of responsibility, as many people are, it's rather difficult to ignore the phone when it rings these days. Sure, you could put it in the car while you play golf and let the people who rely on you go swivel, but I'd say that's somewhat indicative of your character. Personally that's not something I could do.

Hey Everyone, just thought of another thing about the internet. It makes it much easier to get money out of people and rack up large poker debts. Again personally that's not something I could do. Especially because it must be extremely time demanding trying to pay everyone back.

Pretty irresponsible if you swan off playing Golf, where there might not be a signal, and then somebody who relies on you as the big boss man can't get hold of you.
