Hey Marky, as I said if you're in a position of responsibility, as many people are, it's rather difficult to ignore the phone when it rings these days. Sure, you could put it in the car while you play golf and let the people who rely on you go swivel, but I'd say that's somewhat indicative of your character. Personally that's not something I could do.

Hey Ray, what was it about the normal mobile phone question that got under your skin?

Hey Everyone, just thought of another thing about the internet. It makes it much easier to get money out of people and rack up large poker debts. Again personally that's not something I could do. Especially because it must be extremely time demanding trying to pay everyone back.

Agree with Mantis.

There is a balance when playing golf that I would rather be able to nip something in the bud, workwise. If I answer that first call and kill it dead. More than likely, if I don't, by the time I am back to the car, fifteen other people are involved, all having tried to second guess me, and in all probability caused me twice as much work......and grief.

Hey Mantis, you'll be glad to know in no way did you get under my skin. Sadly for me you are far too articulate for someone of my intelligence to understand your wordings so to save myself from ending up in a fit of tears in a corner of my smallest, darkest room in my house due to my levels of stupidity, I just don't try most of the time, unless I'm feeling brave then they odd time I will give it a good go  thumbs up

Like I say above I'm too stupid to understand were you are going with your wonderful use of the English language so I can't get my head around your hey everyone text, I'll just have to leave that to everyone else to decifer.

Sorry for the derail tikay.

I get all that Adzy, I do, we'd rather, but we have a choice, it's not a "demand", we can't always do all the things we want - thats the point.

When I was working & I played golf, the phone stayed in the car - that's the rule. No phones on the Golf Course. Ever.

And when I got to the 15th or 16th, I'd start to dread how many missed calls I would return to.

We finish the round, tradition requires us to go have a drink with our group. But first, I'd sling the clubs in the locker, then collect my Moby messages. There'd be 16,  18, 20, messages about messages, do this, don't do this, I've done it, oh wait, did you do it. It did my head in. But I wanted to play golf, that's the bill I had to pay.

Now, I'm cutting back on these different things I want to do, there are not enough hours in the day to do them all, as we are spoilt for choice. Facebook became a burden, so I came off it. BIG plus that.

I can't spend enough time on Fred either, so I'm a bit part player these days.

Same with blonde, I want to spend more time here, but I don't have the time.

So now I turn everything off every evening & play some poker, & proper enjoy myself.

And I have trebled my daily book reading time, and I try & watch some nature TV for an hour every day.

And once a week, I try and have a non-internet day, free myself from the shackles, & do something different, go up to London, or take a walk along the river path.

We just can't do all the things we want to, but these are choices, not demands.

Less is often more.

I'd say the reason we are more impatient now than we used to be isn't because life is more demanding now but because pretty much everything is more accessible now than in the past. The Internet, Mobile Phones, Technology advancements etc etc means we just aren't willing to wait for things anymore, because we don't have to. That seeps through into peoples overall mentalities resulting in being more impatient than we used to be.

This.

One thing I am increasingly start to think is that the fact that we can all access google in our pockets and answer pretty much ANYTHING within 30 seconds of it being posed, is actually a bad thing. Yes we can quickly recall what year Roy Orbison died or the name of the actor who played Ralph from Happy Days, but at a cost. It's made us really impatient when we don't know something and probably has caused us to lose our sense of wonder. It also likely means we are losing a vital component in learning, because we no longer make mistakes then get better, we jump right to the answer.

That's an interesting angle Barry.

On balance, not sure I agree.

The internet alllows almost the whole world to be better educated, or more correctly, know more stuff.

That has to be good, right?

Don't disagree with anything you say Tikay. For me, as a closet "worrier", it helps me cope better. I may not take the call or listen to the message but by having the phone with me on the course, I am in control.

Leaving the phone in the car, almost generates a fear that spoils my game, and these days with my handicap sliding ever upwards, I need as few reasons as possible.

I do like some of your angles about just making time though.

Based on my sons usage 20min plus you tube clips are very popular if they relate to some bloke showing what he does on Minecraft!!! it appears to be almost more popular than actually playing the game for kids of a certain age! The only times I have ever used you tube is to show my kids some quality music.

I had never heard of Minecraft, so I went to Wiki and had a peruse.

I need to lay down now in a dark room to absorb some of that. I may just be a while.

So, this Minecraft thing blew me away.

Been going since 2009, sold millions of copies, biggest selling this that & the other. In the nature of these things, it must have passed it's peak now, surely?

But no.

Two weeks ago, Mr Microsoft purchased the whole thing, lock stock & barrel.

On September 15, 2014, Microsoft announced a deal to purchase the game's developer, Mojang, granting the company ownership of the game's intellectual property. The all-cash deal is worth $2.5 billion.

So we can assume there is still plenty of exploitave mileage in Minecraft, Microsoft don't pay 2.5 Billy for a dead duck.

I had a good read of the Wiki page, too.

I can't even begin to understsand it all, sounds like a sort of internet lego to me.

For those of my vintage or older, Ralphy Boy, Tom & Co, some extracts from the Minecraft Wiki page are below. And think about poor Booder, ooh-ahh-ing out there in East Anglia, where they still have Early Closing day every Wednesday, what must he make of all this?

Minecraft is a sandbox indie game

Non-hostile animals—such as cows, pigs, and chickens—spawn during the daytime

By contrast, hostile mobs—such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies—spawn during nighttime and in dark places, such as caves

As of April 29, 2014, the game has sold 15 million copies on PC, becoming the best-selling PC game of all time. As of June 25, 2014, the game has sold almost 54 million copies across all platforms. On February 25, 2014, the game reached 100 million registered users.

As of April 4, 2014, the Xbox 360 version has sold 12 million copies. In addition, Minecraft: Pocket Edition has reached a figure of 21 million in sales. The PlayStation 3 version sold one million copies in five weeks.

In July 2010, PC Gamer listed Minecraft as the fourth-best game to play at work

MineCon is an official Minecraft convention. The first one was held on November 18–19, 2011, at Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. All 4,500 tickets for MineCon 2011 were sold out by October 31

The next MineCon will be held in fall 2015 in London, Great Britain.

First of all, let me clarify some things about the "infinite" maps: They're not infinite, but there's no hard limit either. It'll just get buggier and buggier the further out you are. Terrain is generated, saved and loaded, and (kind of) rendered in chunks of 16*16*128 blocks. These chunks have an offset value that is a 32 bit integer roughly in the range negative two billion to positive two billion. If you go outside that range (about 25% of the distance from where you are now to the sun), loading and saving chunks will start overwriting old chunks. At a 16/th of that distance, things that use integers for block positions, such as using items and pathfinding, will start overflowing and acting weird.

I struggled to get past Line One - a sandbox indie game.

A what?

I fear it must be frightfully addictive.

Can't say I've ever had a convo anywhere, anytime, with anyone, about Minecraft.

I think I need to get out more.

TOTALLY understand all that Adzy. And I'm as guilty as anyone of trying to do everything. Like you, I'm Lord Worryguts, can't help it, we are made that way, it's in our DNA.

But eventually, wayyyy to late perhaps, the penny dropped, & now I'm trying to cure my addictions to all these wonderful choices we have.

Anyway, how you doing with the old Minecraft thing, you built any new frontiers, or met any non-hostile cows lately?

Thanks John, someone told me about this chap.

I'll have a watch tonight, thank you.

I employed a young lass with cerebal palsy once, she effectively only had use of one arm, & even that was wobbly. JNK went apeshit at first. To be fair, I did employ her as a typist.......

Anyway, she was the best kid you could ever dream of employing. She wanted to PROVE she was as good as anyone else, & she typed as fast as anyone, but with one hand, & just spent all day trying to help others. In 5 years with me, she went into hossie 11 times to have her "useless" arm re-set, but she never once complained.

I don't exactly know what "salt of the earth" means but she was proper salt.

There's been a positive shift in language in recent times from "disabled people" to "people with disabilities" (from the active to the passive voice, if you will). It reinforces the point that we are all people first, before anything else.

Imagine the furore if Claire Balding were to refer to the summer Olympics today as the "normal Olympics". In times past, any resistance to such a description would have been met with "well, what else could you call it?!"

Interestingly that has two rather contradictory meanings.
