The Dark Net book had a whole chapter on Bitcoin, of which I know nothing, so I went over to Wiki to have a bit of a look.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin
I'm not one bit the wiser for reading that. Love all the stats & numbers, just as I do in Baseball, but I can't realy say I understood much of it.
Can anyone explain in a few crisp sentences & short words?
I mean, where do you begin with explanations like this?
For example, between 1 March 2014 and 1 March 2015, the average number of nonces miners had to try before creating a new block increased from 16.4 quintillion to 200.5 quintillion
I did manage to work out that a Bitcoin is currently worth around $450, & that there will be a finite number of them eventually - 21 million, & not a Bitcoin more.
Also, as far as I can tell, Tesco don't accept Bitcoin.

Did anyone watch the Hillsborough documentary last night?
Pretty depressing stuff.
I did not really want to watch it, but I could not bring myself to switch it off.
Apparently, it was "acclaimed" on Twitter.
It really was harrowing wasn't it. Last week My wife and I took the kids to lay some flowers at the memorial at Hillsborough. My parents house is just at the other side of Hillsborough park from the memorial side of the ground and in the past the kids have asked a few questions as to why it is there. So after letting them watch some of the news footage the week before after the findings of the inquest we decided they knew enough now to come with us tho I was a little concerned they might get upset.
After each laying their bunch of flowers they were asking questions about the pictures and scarves and Caitlin counted every one of the faces on a picture of all the victims.
About two minutes after explaining some things to her she only asked me one question 'Dad, if I died would you come and take me home' (she told me later she had heard a man talking about that on the TV coverage the week before) At that moment I wasn't sure if we had judged it right by taking them.
My wife was reading the cards and I could see she was upset so went to stand with her and she pointed at one of the cards left on a bunch of flowers. It said roughly (tho I've taken the name out.)
RIP xxxxxxxxxx
I did everything I could that day, I'm so very sorry I couldn't do more.
Retired Former PC xxxxxxxxx (he had used his police number)
Really upsetting stuff and it encapsulated my only small sadness after the jurors delivered their verdicts the week before which was there were few mentions of the people of Sheffield and Nottingham in the articles written and the speeches made.
It was ghastly, Phil.
So many scenes - assuming they were faithfully represented - were just beyond my imagination. That Saturday night & Sunday morning must have been dreadful for those awaiting news - sitting in a School Hall, being bussed here & there, taken to a Mortuary etc.
And that chap who chaired one of the subsequent inquiries making a quip to reporters outside the Court as to "You can never rely on Liverpool folk to turn up on time" must have been lucky to escape with his job. What an insensitive thing to say, especially considering his position.
I had recorded it, too, but deleted it afterwards, not sure I could ever watch that again.
I do think that many regular folks, Policeman included, deserved more mention for the things they did that day.
The Police Authority, of course, deserve lambasting, but my impression was that many of the regular coppers behaved bravely, & with honour.

Truly awful wasn't it, how could anyone who truly believed he was impartially chairing an inquiry ever say something like that.

His credibility was shattered at that very moment. He should not have been allowed to continue in that role.

Meanwhile Frank Field chairs the inquiry in to the BHS collapse and its pension deficit.

After The Road to Little Dribbling, I started my next read, "The Dark Net".
Oh my word, you could not begin to imagine a more stark contrast from the easy read of Bryson's pleasant ramblings.
This is real life stuff, not fiction, & it's quite the scariest, most frightening & depressing thing I've come across in a very long time. It actually gives me nightmares if I read a chapter before bed.
If anyone here thinks they have seen, or been the wrong end of, trolling & flaming, read this book, & you are in for a very nasty surprise indeed.
Seriously, there are some bad bad people out there, who will stop at nothing to revel in the distress of others.
Barry Carter, in particular, probably understands this subject more than most, & I hope he reads it & shares his views with us more eloquently than I can.
Well written, & I can't put it down, it's like watching a car crash in slow motion. But it's just horrible in every way.
Read it, really enjoyed it (well not enjoyed, horrified, but interesting). There are some chapters about paedophiles which are uncomfortable reading.
Very much like this book, which I recommend as the best book of last year
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0196HJ6OS/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1
In both instances, the saving grace in each book is how well the author captures the humanity of the people involved, without that they would be very dark reading.
The author, Jamie Barlett, is worth following on twitter, he is doing a new book atm about people who find themselves in extremist political groups.
I'm currently reading this, which is on our favourite subject - entitlement. Its from someone who has studied it for 20 years and has 11 million surveys worth of data, a real treasure trove of the stuff
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Generation-Americans-Confident-Assertive-Entitled--/dp/0743276981/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1462465825&sr=8-3-fkmr0&keywords=joan+twenge
Prior to that I was reading a few books on the Cold War, fascinating stuff
Thanks for all that, Barry. Don't start me off on "entitlement", please....
Think I'll get that "You have been publicly shamed" book. Quite a topic, that.
Recommend all of his books, he is like Louis Theroux but on paper instead of the screen.
I have followed Jon Ronson for a while. He used to be a late night broadcaster on KFM in Manchester/Stockport, which is the station I spent much of my 20s listening to. The station was like a smaller version of XFM/6Music and failed commercially. Despite that, what must be an unusual proportion of their deejays went on to achieve fame elsewhere. Craig Cash and Caroline Ahern went on to star in the Royle Family. I am fairly sure he worked with her on Mrs Merton too. Terry Christian also started there, and his show was my favourite. He managed to mix Madchester favourites, indie tunes, rap and old soul classics in one show. It was really odd that he ended up getting absolutely panned on The Word.
Jon Ronson has produced a string of documentaries in the style of Louis Theroux. When I first saw a Louis Theroux program, I thought he was copying Jon Ronson's style. Having looked back, they both appeared about the same time, so maybe they just independently settled on the same style. He also has a film credit for The Men that stare at goats, which stars George Clooney. It isn't that great a film, and I enjoyed his documentaries more (including The Men that stare at goats). He has also written articles for the Guardian for many years. Despite reading lots of his stuff over the years I haven't read any of his books. I must make a start.

He was also the keyboardist for Frank Sidebottom's band, from that Manchester-ish bunch of people.
In his book Them: Adventures with Extremists, which is IMO his funniest book, he actually talks about his similarity with Louis Theroux, which he very funnily uses at a time when he literally though he was going to get killed by the Bildeberg group (Side note: He almost certainly is the reason why the Bildeberg group is now publicly known).
FYI his Joe Rogan interview is brilliant and neatly covers all his writing career (including the Louis Theroux story):
I met him at a book signing last year, proper fan boy me obviously.

It is weird how you can now put the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle together with the help of the internet. It turns out he was the manager of The Man From Delmonte who were one of the bands I expected big things of back in the day. It now dawns on me I was probably manipulated by his radio show into liking them. I had a pretty good record of going to see bands who went nowhere.
I really disliked Frank Sidebottom for a long time, before getting him in the end. Inevbitably, it was likely to be just before he gave up on his career.

The dark web has been a bit of a fascination of mine for the past year or so. Particularly the online drug/weapon 'markets' like Abraxas, Alphabay etc. Something so 'off limits' but so easy to access. It's the virtual equivalent of your dodgy mate who knows a bloke who knows a bloke.
I have no interest in getting nicked, being a junkie, or staging a Coup D'etat so I'm just a curious browser, but seeing the amount of stuff you can have delivered to your door the next day is mind blowing. Couple of grenades, $1000 in counterfeit $20 bills and some Class A drugs? Sure.
To make one bitcoin, your PC needs to solve ultra-complex equations. Each time you solve a 'block' of them, you get one bitcoin.
I don't know too much about bitcoins, but from what I understand is you can either buy them from a bitcoin exchange online, or 'mine' for them yourself on your computer. They don't come easy though, and to make one bitcoin in a reasonable amount of time you'd need a seriously powerful set of PCs all churning at once. A calculator online says a $600 bitcoin mining computer would make $4.50 worth of bitcoin a day. The more bitcoin that become available, the more difficult mining bitcoin becomes. Got to pay your electricity bill as well, so you'd probably operate at a loss.
There's lots of different cryptocurrencies about now, all with the same sort of concept. Dogecoin was one, and they got popular enough to sponsor a NASCAR team for a little bit. The D in Vegas takes Bitcoin, I know that much as they had a big sign for it outside last year and they had a sort of cashpoint where you could transfer bitcoins to them and get money out. Probably ripe for money laundering.
Some online poker places take bitcoin, and I've seen some cafes in London make a point of accepting bitcoin too.
Did you hear about that bloke who bought a couple of hundred bitcoin back in it's infancy for a few quid, and then got rid of his computer which he stored them on? Bitcoin shot up to $1000 each a couple of years later, and he'd binned 6 figures of virtual currency.

I managed to watch that whole Joe Rogan video last night whilst getting mugged by stars. I was familiar with some of it, but it was still pretty intersting and genuinely funny in parts. I would recommend it to others.
I have ordered a couple of books, though I worry I might be familiar with a lot of the content now.

No all his books are very densely packed with lots of good stuff.
If you liked the Joe Rogan, Rogan's interview with Louis Theroux is pretty much three hours of the same kind of fun.

Rogan is great, and he absolutely coins it in from that podcast.
He's doing a show at MGM during the UFC weekend this summer, and I'm hoping that it doesn't clash with card that evening.

Love Rogan, it's not even so much him as much as his willingness to talk about anything and the fact his guests have a full three hours to really delve into some interesting topics. I skip the MMA ones but pretty much everything else I listen to. I think Jon Ronson is still my fave guest of his.
Rogan retweeted me yesterday, got well over 200 retweets in a single hour. Yep, he is coining it in. I think I heard he gets upwards of $15,000 an episode.

Yeah, he's very open about everything, and it leads to discussions on a wide range of interesting stuff.
The Joey Diaz ones are funny, especially when Rogan gets him ranting about something or other, but they're not especially enlightening
I read an article about podacsts last month, which said his was one of the biggest worldwide, and I think it suggested ~$30k per podcast, which is probably why all his pals are getting into it now.
I think it was down to Redban that it all started, and there are some of the really old ones on Youtube, which are just Rogan, Redban, and other comedians sat around a coffee table with a laptop.

I think Redban is dumb, and sucks, and tends to ruin every podcast he is on. However, it does seem like he is the bridge between Rogan and all the interesting stuff they talk about.
I highly recommend the Bill Burr podcast, its the funniest thing I've listened to by a mile, however its all one mad guy rambling and no interesting guests etc.
