One last thing before I belatedly address Glasto, as requested & reply to a few PM's.

Last weekend I managed 3 min cashes in 3 nights, & Typhoon & Tom were both kind enough to mention it, modest as it was. They are part of my WhatsApp railing crew. See, there it is again, WhatsApp affecting our lives.

I returned to poker last night, this time with the Big Boys in a £560 thing. Incidentally, Rick Trigg was next to me for a good while & we had a good old catch up, everything from the old days, Barry Neville (running a private cash game in Sheffield apparently) to the WSOP, Will Kassouf & of course all the latest goss.

I seem to have earned a new nick at DTD, Mr Min Cash, or Min Cash Bloke. Meh.

So I turned over a new leaf last night & decided to try & up my aggression levels. After 7 levels I was over double average, though the cards were very kind to me. Then again you probably guessed that.

Then it all went a bit wrong, but even so, & when play finished I ended up sort of mid table, & of the 62 returnees from 276 runners I finished....60th.

I can sense the mockery, & that's fair comment. And so today, I've got a touch of the Kevin Keegans....

Glasto.

Too many comments to reply too individually, so I'll just try & do a quick summary.

Pokerpops

The Searchers? Crikey.  So I went to YT & had a look, & there they were, in their 60's rock band cashmere suits & everything. And all these years on & can remember every word of "Sweets for my Sweet" & "Needles & pins-err".

But after watching for 30 seconds, the magic had gone.

There is some 60's music that has stood the test of time thouigh - The Beatles (obv), Small Faces, Roxy Music, The Kinks, The Hollies etc. But, for me, not the Searchers, sorry.

karabiner & Supernova.

Sorry, Neil Young is not for me, always seemed to be angry & shouty. And yes, my music tastes are a bit shallow & narrow. I have widened somewhat of later though, BB King, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Derek Trucks especially, Magic Slim, Clapton & Beck, obv.

Elliott.

Elliott weas our Clapton Correspondent Next Door. EssexPhil did the more general music, though his taste in music was beyond dreadful. (Afternoon, Phil).

Anyway, question for Elliott - why has Clapton never appeared at Glasto, & do you think he ever will?

My own Glasto memories. Never watched much, caught most of what I wanted to see on YT.

Rather enjoyed Pulp. Jarvis can be a bit marmite but deep down he's a good man. And some of their stuff, light as it is, is rather nice.

Weird Jarvis fact. Did you know he was once EuroStar's "European Cultural Ambassador"? Huh? What that?

A little googling tells us at the time he lived in Paris, so maybe Cocker would have used EuroStar a lot & lent his name in return for free travel. At the time he was married to the grandly named  Camille Bidault-Waddington although they missed a trick there by not appending "Cocker", Camille Bidault-Waddington Cocker would have been epic.

Back to Pulp, I'm a huge fan of Candida Doyle, who despite positively horrific arthritic hands & fingers, still manages to press a few notes, repetitive as they may be. She's the most un rock band member ever, she looks like she should be a sub-Postmaster. And any lady in their early 60's who rocks up at Glasto in a backless full-length shimmering evening gown has to get a bit of credit.

Which just leaves my personal Glasto '25 highlight, a cameo appearance by Robert Smith. For oldies like Tom, he's The Cure frontman.

Rather oddly, he did two duets with some unknown bimbo - Oliver Rodrigo or somesuch? He has that lovely familiar voice, & she had a squeaky pre-pubescent girl's voice, never heard a worse harmonic blending & her screechings ruined it. I have no idea what she is famous for, but with the sole exception of her tits she hid her talents well.

Not sure. Don't think I've ever heard him mention it although there were mutterings of a possible headlining way back. One of the forums (now gone) was buzzing about it. I do remember it was when he had Derek Trucks in the band so must have been 2006 or 2007, so was quite excited for that but nothing ever came of it!
If he was going to do it I think he should have done it in the 90s during peak powers.

Good luck in today's pokerings!

Sometimes
you have to be there. Musically I’d agree that they were never a patch for the titans of their era, but then who was? the best bits of their set were the Buddy Holly and Beatles covers, but the whole moment stood as a celebration of their career. It was a joyous experience.

So I too retired last year and have taken up golf again. I hadn't really stopped, I was a member at Barlaston 20 years ago, playing twice a week. Then I found poker. Running a business, poker and golf meant something had to give so the golf took a back seat. The reasoning behind the choice was it meant me and Joo could do the pokering together. Also now only playing golf twice a month meant I couldn't justify the fee.

I've been playing at Onneley for the last 3 months, once a week. It's just 15 minutes from my home, playing with my neighbour who's a member. I have the bug back again and I am joining the club on Tuesday. Have broken 100 in the last 3 rounds playing off 28 at first now 26. My handicap 20 years ago was 18, not sure I'll get back there but thoroughly enjoying the game again.

Talking of phones, do any of you use golf apps? My tech son uses hole 19 app. I scored my round on it last week. It also has GPS of thousands of courses so you can get distances and hole layout.

Glastonbury. Loved the Pulp set. The Prodigy were absolutely amazing.

Been getting back in to live music again too. Trentham hosting a summer of outdoor concerts. Saw Ocean Colour Scene there in May, supported by the Enemy and The Clause. Last week went to see the brilliant Black Keys at the Castlefield bowl in Manchester. Also supported by 2 excellent  bands, 18 year old Alex Spencer and Miles Kane. Tikay check out The Black Keys, I think you would like them.

Fantastic diary update Tony. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I understand where you are coming from with your phone addiction post but my phone,  or more accurately it's ability to give me instant access to the Internet enhances my life no end, I wouldn't be without it. I'm forever Googling people, places and objects. It's like having my own personal guru in my pocket. That said, I never use it in situations where it would be a distraction, like when I'm walking the the dog or on the golf course. (Except to check yardage or to find out which bird is sining)

Inventions that have changed the world since my birth.

MRI and CT scans.

Contraceptive pill available on the NHS (Early 60s for married women & 1971 for all women.

Digital photography. No more waiting for your roll of 12, 24 or 36 photographs to be developed. Now you can take hundreds, review them instantly and save or discard them as you like.

GPS. Now you can have turn by turn, door to door directions to anywhere in the world. Missed your turning? No problem, it will re-calculate seamlessly. It's incredible, SO liberating. I use it every day.

Credit/debit cards. Access goods and services worldwide by waving a bit of plastic. Who would have believed it?

Podcasts and electronic books. Those who use them will understand without me explaining. Those who don't won't. Air fryers ditto.

I could go on... Isn't life wonderful and aren't we privileged to be living it now?

I got this email this morning

Hi Dave,

Your Handicap Index has changed.

Home Club: Renfrew

Old Handicap Index: 26.7

New Handicap Index: 27.0

I was 22 at the beginning of the year. If I can give any advice on the subject, it would be to only play courses with no greenside bunkers, if you suddenly lose the ability to get out of said hazards.

If you get the chance, watch the end of the Evian women's golf.

Dunno really, I just have a good memory for dates and numbers. Used to know 50 or 60 phone numbers off by heart back in the good old days before those pesky phones took over our life, and now I have to double check my own number when telling people it Smiley

The Cure topped the bill last year if memory serves which is not always the case..
