Not a big deal really, but Gill is a bit like Tom, she can be stubborn & difficult at times, (not as bad as Tom to be fair)



When it comes to being difficult, stubborn & obdurate she's not in Tom's League. He's the obduracy & pricklyness GOAT.

Yet again, he embarrassed us all on the golf course this week. Details soon on the Golf Thread.

Quick question for you.

Anyone recognize this chap?

Tom sent me the 'photo (hope I'm not stealing his thunder), it was taken by him at Goliath yesterday.

I used to be very close to this chap & some of you will remember him, as his star shone brightly for a while, although that was a long time ago.  

Name that man...

Clue - originally, he was a Gala Notts regular, & I know a few of you used to frequent that place.


PS - Tom is disqualified from answering.

PPS - I never even recognized the chap until Tom told me his name, & yet we were THAT close & I have much to be grateful to him for.

And one more "back in the day" story.

Some 20 years ago - give or take - Julian Thew & I used to run together so to speak, playing the poker circuit, most weeks we would head off somewhere, Vegas maybe, & often to places in Europe - Vienna, Dublin, Deauville, Amsterdam etc. He's another poker friend I have a lot to be grateful to have had. I've run SO well in life.

I'd drive to his home in Nottingham to pick him up, & at the time, his eldest son (only son at the time, though he later had 3 more boys) was called Reuben - "Roo" for short - would have been maybe 2 or 3 years old. And there was always a bit of a scene as we packed Julian's bags into my car, with Roo getting very upset & clinging desperately onto Julian, as Roo knew that Dad was going away for a week or whatever, as that always happened when I showed up.

Well time races by & I was chatting to Jules on WhatsApp yesterday, & he sent me this 'photo. That's Amanda, Jules wife, with the now grown-up Reuben, who graduated this week with a First in Accountancy & Finance.  

Jules will have been absolutely bursting with pride, & quite right too. I gather Roo is a "good kid", & in this day & age, it can't be easy bringing kids up to be decent members of society.

Sometimes I regret never having been a parent. Only sometimes though.

We went to London yesterday, just for a mooch & a spot of Afternoon Tea. Was proper lovely.

I really should have retired earlier, this is fun.

Don't give "legal advice" any more. Happily retired.

On the "practical advice" front, situation is likely this.

1. Check who your contract is with, and which law it is subject to (probably English, but might be French)
2. Check what sort of Card you made payment with. It it was a Credit (as opposed to Debit) Card, you will also have rights against the credit card company via s.75 of the Consumer Credit Act (provided the price paid was between £100-30,000)-at least, those were the numbers when my knowledge was up to date
3. Reason for 2 above is that Credit Card Companies are a whole lot easier to deal with than Suppliers. Not least cos they know they can bully the suppliers
4. On the assumption it is English Law, you are not obliged to accept a voucher. There is a clear breach of contract/failure to provide a service you had paid for. They need to be refunding the difference between the price of the service you paid for, and the one they actually supplied
5. Trick is to ensure that the supplier knows both that you won't be fobbed off and that you will cause them more administrative cost on arguing than paying

On a separate note, Gill looks very happy. Dies she have a hearing aid that she can surreptitiously turn off?

A month into retirement and it's all going rather wonderfully so far. I thought I'd struggle to fill my days but so far it's been non-stop, Paris last weekend, then golf every day this week & poker last night.

Seems to me that a variation of Parkinson's Law is in play here.

That continues to prove to be so, so true.

I'm now over 2 months into the Great Retirement Adventure & I've barely had a blank day yet. As a result, I'm behind with replies (sorry), with Updates, & with replying to PM's, WhatsApp Messages & e-Mails. Bear with me please.

It does not get any quieter in the next few days either. Poker at DTD later today, the Sunday Special or whatever it's called, Goliath at Coventry tomorrow, & "the Lads" annual Golf Day at Rushcliffe on Tuesday.

There's a private betting market for Tuesday's Golf Day, & despite being almost the highest handicapper, I'm also the outsider in the betting. Marv.

I asked Gill, & she said she used a Credit Card.

I'm shocked that you make Gill pay to take you to Paris.

Did she buy you any jewelery while you were out there?
