A weird night for me last night at DTD. In short, I ran £200 up to £500 in a Hold-'Em Cash game in which I sat whilst awaiting a DC seat, then ran that £500 up to £2,500 in short order, before dribbling most of it back over the next 4 hours, & ending up a mere (but grateful) £300 up. Still, I suppose it beats losing. Just.
When I first sat at the DC Table, it was - for me, anyway - a living nightmare. The first 3 Pots, in which I sat out, were all over £3,000, & in each case, multi-handed - 5 or more - with ALL the money in as soon as the cards were dealt (pre flop or downcards). That's not poker & there's no skill in shoving the lot in pre, though playing Roulette makes marginal more economic sense. IMO. I'm never - EVER - going to play that sort of "poker", because while I know my skillset is limited, I have a regard for money, & it just makes no sense to shove the lot in pre, every hand, hoping we hit. Where is the skill in that? Do these peeps have a money tree, I'm thinking?
But, thankfully, it calmed down later, & I was hitting a lot of nice cards, & beter still, getting paid off by two players time after time. They both eventually went Busto, the Table toughened up - Kim Costa arrived, Moody was there, and Latif, good players all of them, especially Kim. And my cards went the other way, bad starting hands, bad calls, & I suppose, those guys are, if not too good for me, at least a very tough proposition. I suppose a better player would have got up & left when £2k up, but I just enjoy sitting there & playing, so it never crossed my mind to leave early. Daft, really. So, not best pleased that I lost most of my profit, but happy I came out ahead - I actually drifted into negative territory shortly before stumps were drawn, but the cards turned happy in the last half-hour.
So, tonight I'll have another try. Tomorrow, I'm doing the Sky Show, so no poker, & on Sunday, subject to confirmation still, I may be doing some TV work at the Brighton GUKPT, fingers xxx'd. Failing that, I'll play the Sunday £100 at DTD I imagine.
Had a lovely chat with Simon "slo-mo" Hawksworth last night, he's popped into DTD a few times recently. He introduced me to poker, & is a scratch golfer & a very old mucker. Be nice to see more of him down there.

I guess lowball does have straights and flushes... its just that they are considered hi and therefore not desirable!
Only in the now rarely played "London Lowball" afaik.
Straights and flushes do not exist in the normal (US standard) lowball nor in any hi-low games that I am aware of, apart from Padooki where flushes are not desirable, but which tikay does not consider to be "poker"
2-7 triple draw has straights..or am I missing something about this discussion? (very possible as it's friday afternoon)

Poker players defy all logic. Part 47.
Two players were sat next to each other in last night's DC. Been pals for donkeys years, close pals too.
One is a great player, tight, rock, & if he bets, he has the goods, & everyone runs for cover. The other is a loose-goose calling station.
Mr Tight bets £200, (half the Pot), on the end. Mr Goose says "OK, I'll pay you off, just to see what you've got". Mr Tight had the nuts, job done.
And I'm thinking, would it not have been easier just to ask yer old buddy to show? He'd do so, for sure. Still, it's only £200, eh?
Those money trees must be in fruit at this time of year.

I am quite sure you are right, boldie.
This is a long-running (3 years) debate between my very good & learned friend, & sly old fox, Karabiner, & myself, & we are strategically maneouvering each other nto a position to deliver the
coup de grace
. He's currently 2 sets & 5-1 up, but my head is up my arse, & I can't hear him.
He thinks, you see, that Padooki is a form of poker.......

I went to DTD last night for the comp but mainly the cash and i had the pleasure of siting with Greg hill (AKA Junior on Blonde).
We where having a good old chin wag and Greg said-
"have you seen Tikay recently?"
"no" i reply, "not for a couple of months"
Literally 10 seconds later the Old man walks in the front doors (followed of course by people with autograph books..)
As usuall the place is swarming with beautiful Valets and dealers and as one walks past our table someone gives a cheeky wolf whistle, just audible to a few people near buy, EVERYONE ignores this apart from Tikay who has a huge grin on his face as he turns to see which of his adoring fans fancies him..

Tikay, I think you are being rather harsh on yourself with regard to the Aces fold. I see lots of peeps slow-play Aces pre-flop only to spaz all their chips away post flop when they are toast...now that's stupid. In this hand the sb uses the psychology of the 5's to play his jacks well....and you being sensitive to that situation is not as bad as you are trying to convince yourself it is. The small error of not raising pre-flop has put you in predicament where you MUST be wary of sb/bb magic...and you are. Furthermore, you flat-call the small boy bet on a
3-5-5
flop and the sb STILL finds the balls to c-r. Upon first glance he looks like a 5 to me.
That said, I think the most basic of post flop questions is "What does my oppo want me to do?" and in this hand I think a c-r to a massive 2,500 suggests he wants me to fold. Slow-play the 5 then batter the 5 always raises an eyebrow with me.
The psycology of poker is powerful and this affected your decisions later in the tournament. I think having the ability to shrug off bad decisions and leave them in the past is the mark of a good player and is something we should all strive for.
The bottom line is....
We are people and so we will play bad sometimes.

MANTIS I hear what you are saying, but myself (and alot of other people) will bet out super strong with a strong hand to get the reaction you have above, and hence get paid very nicely

Yes, tis why Tikay's fold with Aces is not as bad as he feels it is.
