This is a cormorant, or as Red thinks, a Heron. There are lots of them in the Serpentine, in London, where I first saw them on a Poker Week gig one Sunday. I don't know, but I think they are designed for diving, for fish.

The Chinese train cormorants to fish for them. They take the cormorant out in a fishing boat to which it is attached by a thin rope and then they dive in and return to the boat and spit the fish out time and time again. I believe a well trained one would be worth a fortune to local fishermen.

Tell me that's your version of Wainwright's Duck, Ralph, please......

What an extraordinary thing!

The bird is actually fitted with a collar that is too tight to allow the fish to pass through. The cormorant has no choice but to let its owner take the fish and accept the entrails as payment.

When The Times does Spam, it does it well.

The Times ran an interesting piece yesterday.

They quoted Sir David Attenborough's views on the budget cuts in the BBC Natural History Unit. You can imagine Sir David's views.

The same article also spammed Sir David's latest epic, which begins later this week - "Life in Cold Blood", being a detailed look at the world of reptiles & amphibians, on the same scale, & a follow-up to, Planet Earth, & Blue Planet. Not to be missed, clearly.

But as a footnote, this little rider caught my eye.

Sir David was asked why he never mentions God in any of his epic & much-loved Nature Series. He replied......

"I tend to think of an innocent child sitting on the bank of a river in Africa, who's got a worm boring through his eye which will render him blind. Now, presumably you think this Lord created this worm, just as he created the hummingbird. I find that rather tricky.

they got the education
I hold the record for detentions though

tikay re the Saturday Main Event

Be careful its 7500+7500 double chance

so you won't be in the building to take the second set of chips at end level 2. Make sure on the phone that they will place the second set on your stack!

comp starts at 8pm

you arrive 2am

6 hours late

take off 1 hour for dinner

take off 30 minutes for breaks

so you miss 4.5 one hour levels

assume 3 orbits per level, 30 hands per hour

you lose

75 x 3
150 x 3
300 x 3
450 x3

=2,925 chips

leaving you with 12,000 or so

with blinds at 200-400 on your arrival

30x bb in a small field with an average stack by then of 20,000 or so?

doesn't strike me as great value for money!

OK, I gotta disappear now, I'm heading South, to Feltham, to do tonight's show.

I may be a while, Rich........

If you wanna do tree puns in my Diary, you gotta be prepared to pay the bill. Wink

Not booked my Hotel yet, I'm so tired I can't think straight. Probably stay in Feltham tonight, or maybe Luton, & tomorrow I'm going to Luton for the £250, the only Fessie Event I can play this week, so I'll stay there I think on Thursday night.

Thursday's £250 at Luton is a corker. £250, with one rebuy OR add-on. 6,000 starting chips, first two levels one hour, thereafter 45 minutes. Compo is playing it too, so there's value.

Can't play Friday or Saturdays Luton Event, as I'm working Saturday night. So dtd on Sunday for the £100 I guess.

Next week I'm doing the Show on both Thursday & Friday, so will be free at the weekend - but that's a good weekend to be free, as it means I can play the dtd Monthly £300. I'm also meeting virgin next week, in London, to finalise details for their Fessie in April, at Aspers, in Newcastle. I've had the good fortune to get the "Emcee & Host" job for that, & following their stunningly successsful Broadway Weekend, this is a prize plum for me. And the greengages are good.

I need some time on blonde, too, to addrsss some "issues". I need to reply to ChunkyMick's interesting Post - the Mick McCool one. It's settled down now, but I have to make a few points, & I can't allow the slur on the Mods, or on Chili, to go unanswered. But fair play to Chunky - who's a long-term cardroom acquaintance  - he did at least put his points across in a measured & polite manner. For that, he deserves a decent reply, even though I disagree with much of what he said. A good debate amongst civil grown-ups is fine by me. But personal abuse is a no-no. Well done to Chunky for not descending to the abuse level.

I also intend to explain, at some length, (seperately), the thinking behind blonde Live Updates - what we set out to achieve with blonde Live Updates. Some people don't seem to "get" where we are coming from. I'm a little tired of the personal abuse the Updaters have received in the last few weeks. I've bided my time, & we won't be fighting, but the blonde Updaters deserve & are entitled to be defended. But there's one mystery I won't be able to solve, because I just don't grasp it. If folks don't like our Updates, nobody forces them to read them. They are free to go elsewhere. So why do they get so upset? It's a freebie! And I'm fine with constructive criticism of the blonde Updates, but if they want to abuse the Updaters personally, they should have the decency to do it via PM, or e-Mail, not publically, when the Updaters are flat-out busy, & just trying to do their job. Which they do, precisely & totally to the "design spec". Take me on, not them.

I so wish there were more hours in the day, so I could kep up with everything.

OK, the M1 awaits.

That's a bit near the hedge Tom.

Have you ever visited, by the bye, a "Box Garden"?
