OK, am in my Luton Hotel, & am about to set off for Sky at Feltham, down the M1, round the M25, & a 3pm meeting with Mr Sky Big Suit. I've been summoned. Oops.....Ah well, it's been emotional.

I may be a while.

Probably in line for a promotion to run Sky or something..you run good, TK.

Beadle has died....

Well I guess I'd better say something as I had a Beadle avatar for the last couple of years.  I took it down first thing this morning out of respect when I read the paper.  I did smirk when I first saw the avatar and apathy as much as anything stopped me changing it.

On the subject of mocking misfortune, well it happens, most people deal with it very well, but I accept that some don't.  I feel for those that don't, as long as they aren't the sort of people that throw loads of mud but then cry foul when they get some back.

I pick up a lot of heat for my size, Tikay you pick up a lot of stick on ageist stuff etc etc.  Others get picked on for bubbling every week!  Of the (admitedly small) sample size of people who I have spoken to with a bad affliction, they don't want to be excused or left out - they want to feel normal and included.  So, they are as fair game as the next person IMHO.  As far as I am concerend, something is funny or it isn't.  If it is a fat joke and it's funny - then it's funny.  Even if it gets personalised and specifically aimed at me, then it is still as funny as it was before.

I'm sure someone will be quick to reply with an example of where that doesn't hold true, but for the most part, I will happily trade jabs with others who I believe have a strong enough constitution to take it on the chin.

Anyway, RIP Mr Beadle, it turns out that you weren't as bad as your shows...

theres an old saying in this world "if you dont laugh you cry"

i think most people go through life a butt of many jokes for some reason or another, whether there appearance, there religeon (sp) or whatever. its human nature to mock others in one way or another.

i grew up with jokes about the size my nose still get them, but i give just as much to my ginger mates, my fat mate and my bald mate etc.

even on here we refer to some of our own in this way for example kev for having wonky eyes. and im sure if i troll deep enough tony i can find a post or thread where you have joined in with the couch kev bashing.doesnt make any of us a bad person for doing so.

i admire people like mr beadle, yes like others some of his shows make me cringe, like ericstoner and ironside on here, people who were either born with or somehow tragically struck down with a disability. people who have been given a rough hand by dealer in the sky.

these guys are bigger men than il ever be with the way they cope laughing and joking  and respect to them all.

i hope my post doesnt come across  at all condesending and is seen in the way i meant it.

rip mr beadle

I Posted a few weeks back that whether Capello picked Beckham or not would be the litmus test of his managerial ability, & ruthlessness to succed at the job. Test 1, passed with flying colours. At last, an England Manager with the guts to do his own thing, & to stand up to the media bully boys.

He has a great chance now, & the overpaid Premiershp Prima Donnas have been sent a message. And if they ain't bright enough to receive it loud & clear, they'll be out of the Team.

I hope Capello succeeds. I think he has a chance.

I get enough of your football stories at the poker table   havent you got anything else to talk about?

So, Jeremy Beadle has died, & before his body is cold, the "hand" jokes have started, by text, & in Foras across the Web.

I never liked his Shows, in fact, I loathed them, making fools of people seems a fashion these days, & Edmonds also exploited that to the full with the stunningly predicatble, dull & entirely unfunny Gotcha's.

But, I gather, he done much for Charity, & ironically, one of his charities was actually for Leukemia Reserch, & he'd been asociated with it for years - only to then fall victim to it himself, quite recently. And it's more likely the loss of his immune system due to Leukemia, rather than Pneumonia, as reported, being the real cause of his death. He had no body defence against Pneumonia because Leukemia, or the treatment of it, had taken it's toll.

But I always had a little place in my heart for the guy, on two grounds.

His Father left his Mother when she got pregnant with Jeremy, & never supported the subsequent Son financially. Jeremy refused to meet the Father in later years, feeling that would be a slight on his Mum.

And, of course, there was his hand, the butt of so many jokes. Who'd be born, or become, disabled or imperfect in some way in this cruel & cynical world, where it's freely accepted that the world & his wife can take the piss out of any defomity/ailment? As a kid, I stuttered terribly, & kids being kids thought that was hilarious, but that's just kids, they don't understand. But adult piss-taking of deformities always seems a bit coarse & unthinking to me. I bet it was never said to his face.

He had something called Poland Syndrome, which, bizarrely, was not named thus until 1962, some 13 years after Jeremy was born with the problem. The illness  had been discovered a century before by Alfred Poland, but never named until it was properly diagnosed in the 60's.

During pregnancy, blood supply to the feotus is briefly interrupted at a crucial stage of development, & hey presto, you have a withered or webbed hand, & a lifetime of being laughed at as a freak ahead of you. And, I might add, missing chest muscles on the right side, which may or may not have been another factor in his inability to combat a regular bout of normally treatable pneomonia. It affects more males than females, & it's usually the right hand, & chest muscles, which are affected.

Would those who mocked his affliction be so cynical if their own children were, God forbid, similarly afflicted? I think not.

His Shows were crap, & he made millions, but I bet those jokes about him still hurt him, light as he tried to make of them.

There's a fashion these days to make humour out of tragedy. When did that suddenly become OK? After those poor cockle-picking "slaves" died in Morecambe Bay I got a spate of "joke" texts, ditto 9/11, ditto an earthquake in Pakistan. I have had three "Beadle hand" jokes sent to me this morning by text. Do me a favour. Don't send me any more. I don't like them. Not even a tinsy-winsy bit

And yes, old people get crusty & tetchy in the morning. Wink.

Tikay after reading this post i feel i have to say something,

When does comedy/jokes stop being just that and turn into a swipe at someones affliction?surely this has happened for centuries does comedy have to be censored? there will always be someone somewhere who will always take offence at a certain subject. whether it be an Englishman/Irishman/Scotsman type of joke, religious jokes, a joke against an individual who has recently died ( like when Natalie wood died and straight away the joke came out about what wood doesn't float)comedians throughout time have used certain individuals circumstances to make comedy. And with modern technology as it is jokes go round in nano seconds as apposed to the old days when it was by word of mouth.

I for 1 attempted a joke regarding Mr Beadle and didn't look at it at having a swipe at him personally or mocking him,
you stated above"Would those who mocked his affliction be so cynical if their own children were, God forbid, similarly afflicted? I think not."Well just to inform you my son was born autistic which makes him disabled although not similarly afflicted still disabled and unfortunately i dont know any jokes that contain autistic references but if there were any i wouldn't find them offensive and if they were funny i would laugh.I know we live in PC times but who decides what jokes are offensive is there a list so to speak(no thats silly) i hope you see the point of my post and if i have upset you for making what i thought was a joke/comical comment as it was never intended in that way and i offer my apologies,
please don't take this as a pop at your good self as it is no way intended.

Believe me i have taken enough flack for a previous post to last a lifetime....
