Feltham, Thursday.
Desperately tired, way too many all-nighters. Might take a few days break next week. My own fault, candle both ends & all that, but I'm jaded.
Was due in London for a Tele-Conf Call at Noon, & then was going across to Hammersmith to meet Joe Legge to finalise some stuff for the Virgin Fessie. Woke up at 11.45am. In Derbyshire. Don't you just hate getting up all of a tither?
Terminal 5 opened today, to much fanfare & chest-thumping by all involved. Well played them. Tonight's News was almost wholly from T5, where the Baggage handling Boat broke good & proper. And of course, my beloved BA got it in the neck, though the PR Frontman they offered up was about as far removed from a good communicator as it's possible to get. When will companies realise that good communication skills are a pre-requisite? He read, stony-faced, from a pre-prepared Statement, no smile, no eye-contact, no questions from the floor, sounding like an 80's Trade Union Officer, or a Policeman in front of TV Cameras. ("...We therefore proceeded in a Westerly direction to reports of a RTI at 23.17..."). Once he'd finished the Statement, he turned on his heel & stomped away. FFS.
Staying at Days Inn Luton tonight, & tomorrow night, gonna try & hook up with Compo, who has a weekend Pass as Mrs Compo is away.
OK, the Show awaits.

I've not forgotten I need to answer Simon Galloway's Post, & Question, that'll be later.
For now, though, a Question for everybody.
In any well run CardRoom - I'll use DTD as an example, where the Dealers are perfectly trained & consistent - but it applies to any good Poker Playing Venue.
When the Dealer is about to be changed at a Table, he/she fans the deck of cards out, face-down, in that sort of semi-circle-arcy thing. And THEN they do an odd thing - they turn ONE CARD face up.
Today's question is - why?
I've asked almost every Dealer I ever saw do it, & not one knows the answer - except, often, "because that's the way we are trained to do it". Fair enough - but why?
Oh - I don't know the reason either. I'm just curious. Some would say I'm very curious. Odd, even.

Well I reckon that it's simply an extension of that clap hands thing that the dealers do when counting or changing chips just to show that they haven't palmed one, except that this time it's with cards.

I played in the first event of this Nottingham "festival" the £100 NLH Freezeout if it's the same one.
The tourney was scheduled to start at 7pm, eventually got going at around 7.20pm and at around 8pm I tried to order some food.
"Sorry sir, we're not serving food as there's a buffet at 9.15pm" I was told.
"But I want to order something now and pay for it" was my riposte, and I asked to speak to a manager.
"No sir we are not serving any food on the gaming/poker floor as there's a buffet later at 9.15pm." was the management's response.
i.e. You eat when we tell you to and not before or after was the message. Come again ? I doubt it.
Let's leave the Notts Stanley discussion untill I get home shall we?..I still have to play there for 3 days

I just read the initial post of this thread believing I was reading the latest. I was bemused as to why you were going to Vegas, in particular with Poker Week, but I assumed that maybe you were heading down early for the WPT Grand Final or something. I almost quoted your post and corrected your "This will be my second visit to Vegas" comment, but then it dawned on me...

Simple really? Sorry Ralph, but I think not!
We all know why Dealers/Croupiers/Cashiers do that clap hands thing, but I fail to see the connection between that, & it's quite obvious purpose, & a Dealer turning over a single card from a face-down "fanned" deck.
But at least you came up with an answer, & in that, you were unique. Which implies that nobody knows the answer, or, more likely, a total indifference to my, I readily accept, fairly geeky question.
But everything I see or do in life prompts a series of simple questions in my arguably child-like, inquisitive mind, viz, "what?/why?/how?/when?".
Those Dealers turn that Card over every single time they change Tables, & yet not one of them has yet been able to answer the question I have asked so many of them - "err, excuse me, but why did you just do that?". At best they say "no idea", or "because we are trained to do it". If you were a good Dealer, well-trained, would you not want to know why you were asked/instructed to do something, if the reason were not plainly obvious? Clearly not, but I know I would!
I suppose we are all different, but I just need to know why, in life, or in poker, certain things are the way they are.

Just the 267 pages to go then, & you'll be up to date. I'd skip most of 'em if I were you. You'll be as old as me before you get up-to-date.

Next daft question.
In Tournament Poker, when both or all players are all-in, we have to turn our cards face up on the table. It's pretty much, so far as I know, a Universal Poker Rule, one of the few which is consistent everywhere, certainly in Europe.
In Cash Games, we have no such obligation. Again, Universally observed, no question, so far as I am aware.
Why is that? What makes one so very different to the other?

I don't know why, but i do disagree with it, i think if you are all in then the cards should be on there backs, regardless of tournament or cash game.

Neat try, no cigar. How would that prove or show that the Dealer had nothing in their hands? They flip the card over with their finger, not their hands, & could so so with their palm concealing anything.

Dunno if this the reason they do it, but I know a couple of the dealers at DTD were betting on whether they could find the Ace of spades? Bit of fun maybe?
