This is what I most miss about golf - playing in this sort of scenery. This is a view of Mentmore's 9th. I think. Or it might be the 13th.

Spotted waddling across a fairway - I think (not sure) this might be a partridge.

No, I'm pretty sure it' not a grouse Ralph. I'm more than 45% but less than 50% sure it's a partridge.
By the bye, Chili say she's a "grouse" - a Greek Scouser.

Mum & Dad & Uncle Goose stepping out for their daily constitution with their gooselets.
It's the duty of every goose, on every golf course, to evacuate their bowels entirely on every single green. Trust me, it's true.

After the Golf Dinner & Prizegiving, we had the Golk/Poker £100 Freezeout, & I was determined to Cash, to keep up my good recent run, but I made a complete pigs ear of it & exited in Level two. Worse still, 5 of us had a £100 Last-Longer - Dave Courteney, Jeff Buff,
Paul
Alterman
, Ambro, & me, so I mangled that, too.
There was a little Raise from early pos, called in 3 spots, & I button-called with......
It came.....
Original Raiser Bet out, everyone Passed, & I discounted the flush draw, thinking - well, guessing really (what else can you do but guess?) he was not on the flush-draw, & probably had a big Pair, or big Ace, so I decided to play it for value, & flatted.
He bet bigger on the Turn, but he'd doubled up early, so when I now, belatedly, shoved, he was pot-stuck, had the correct odds, & called - I was horrified to see he was on the flush-draw, which duly rivered, & that was that, I was toast.
I was well overdue a setback, & the Poker Gods delivered. Shocking outdraw though, he had 9-T, & my 3-4 failed to stand up. I run so bad. I think I prob play it the same in future, to be honest though. Once I make the pre-flop call, the die is cast.
I'm not sure who won, I departed, tail well & truly between legs, but I believe
Paul
Alterman
, Simon Galloway &
Paul
Garnham
all Finalled.

On Tuesday, arriving in Harrogate for a brief North Yorkshire Moors & Yorkshire Dales Wonder-Tour, I spotted this bloody great stone by the roadside, on the edge of The Stray. (The inscription on the Stone is to follow).
Why so big? How did they get it there? From where? When was it put there?
It must weigh a ton.

What is, or was, a Turnpike, & what date do you think this stone was placed there? (Not a trick question, I don't have a clue).

A turnpike is a toll road
as to when, no idea
but presumably at some stage the road was on private land and thus people had to pay the toll when going through on horse and cart etc etc
Turnpike trusts from the 1700s would administer the collection of the fees and the upkeep of the new roads
from google
"The name turnpike is said to originate from the military practice of placing a pikestaff across a road to block and control passage. This pike would be "turned" to one side to allow horsemen through. Contemporary illustrations show that a wide gate was normally constructed across the road at a toll collection point. The term bar was also used to describe the point at which the gate was erected.
Turnpike was originally the barrier used to stop travellers while the toll was collected, but came to be used both for the location of the gate and for the road itself"

dates: turnpikes 1700s and system ended in mid 1800s
hazard a guess at early 1700s but you could probably cross reference with Harrogate.

LOL. Leaving tikay to cross reference though. Unless he asks nicely.

It took from 9am this morning until 6pm this evening to get from Harrogate to Hickstead (just North of Brighton), & I start work at 10.30 in the (Saturday) morning setting up Sky Live Three at Brighton Rendezvous. For all sorts of reasons, I need the day to go smoothly, but the planning was meticulous, & I'm hopeful.
It was sold out a good while back, but I got a call from the Casino tonight, could we squeeze Mick Clark (something of a Brighton standing-dish) in? Sadly not, though I suppose if there are a few no-shows, it might be possible. But really, it's for Sky Poker players, plus a few local faces we've invited, & it's them I need to try & keep happy.
We shall see.
I switch Hotels tomorrow, from the Hickstead Lodge to Jurys, in Brighton, though it will be the early hours of Sunday before we are done at the Rendezvous. Then, on Sunday afternoon, I drive up from Brighton to DTD in Nottingham for Day Two of the 3-2-1 Weekend, & I'm much looking forward to the inugural £200 Freezeout at 5pm, though curious as to the numbers it will attract. Anyway, whatever the field size, it should be a great comp. I've not played since Monday, & not missed it either, but I'm looking forward to Sunday. (I won't be playing the Sky Event, duty calls & all that).

Hence the oft-seen expression "TollBar" I assume?
