a quick persual, including of B Jennings (ed), A History of Harrogate and Knaresborough, Huddersfield, 1970.

and I find that "By Act of Parliament turnpike roads had to have milestones from 1767, but in Yorkshire most of these were replaced by the County Councils after they were formed in 1889."

So its at the earliest 1767

I also find

"The large, rough, upright boulder on the left hand (side of the Stray), about nine feet in height and two feet square, has been mistaken by a clever antiquary (Mr. Thomas WRIGHT, in his "Celt, Roman, and Saxon.") for a Druidical stone; it is merely the boundary of two Turnpike Trusts, which meet here. It was erected on the enclosure of the forest, about 1778, and in the "Award" then made it is styled "the great stone pillar erected at Harrogate corner." On the east side is inscribed, "The boundary of Leeds and Ripon Turnpike Road." In 1870 it was enclosed with an iron paling, to protect it from desecration. On the opposite side of the Stray (here called West Park,) is a line of elegant villas, called Beech Grove, which have all been built since 1848. On the enclosure this land was awarded to the king, as Duke of Lancaster, and it yet belongs to that duchy!

So 1778 is the answer

I thank you.

Wow, that's spot on Rich, stunning, thanks. The surrounding Iron paling remains, too.

This is interesting, too.....

Several places across the North Yorkshire Moors - I clearly recall it in Goatland - the verges have rather posh "No Parking - By Order of the Duchy of Lancaster" signage. Who is this Duchy chap - is it Prince Charlie?

Goatland, by the bye, not only has a wonderfully preserved 50's style Railway Station (North Yorkshire Moors Railway), but is the location for "Heartbeat", a TV Programme, for which it is re-christend, on Filming Days, as Aidensfield.

Which gives me the excuse to post this picture taken at Goatland Station on Wednesday. Don't worry, plenty more to follow..... (It's the bang-on-time 16.40 to Whitby).

As with Tom's "open your eyes & you will see" theme, I've become addicted to the beauty of trees.

This little beaut is in the grounds of The Old Swan Hotel, in Harrogate. Simply magnificent.

Glad to see you take a couple of days rest Tony.

You should do it more often with the amount of travelling/work/poker you do.

Spotted waddling across a fairway - I think (not sure) this might be a partridge.

It's a Red-Legged Partridge Tony, an introduction from France/Spain.

http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/r/redleggedpartridge/index.asp

BTW the map on the RSPB site's wrong, as we have a few residents around my folks' house in the west of Scotland. Escapees from one of the Duke of Buchleuch's shoots.

A bit of news from up our way http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/2085186/Stately-home-Dumfries-House-finally-opened-to-the-public.html the stately home has been bought and opened to the public - £15 for an hour tour (tea and cakes included I'm told) - amazingly this fantastic stately home is about a mile outside a rough tough ex-mining town.

From the Duchy website...

The Duke of Lancaster
Since 1399, the title Duke of Lancaster has been held by the reigning Sovereign. Revenue from the Duchy of Lancaster forms a vital component of the Sovereign's income, and is held separately from that of other Crown properties.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is the current Duke of Lancaster. During a reign which has lasted over 50 years, Her Majesty has taken a keen interest in the estate, paying regular visits to the Surveys.

The title Duke of Lancaster continues to be used, even for a female monarch. At gatherings of Lancastrians within the County Palatine and worldwide, the toast is: "The Queen, Duke of Lancaster!"

Thank you Paul.

To be honest, my "work" (TV & organising stuff for Sky & others, "Consulting" stuff) ) is almost a recreation, it's not "real" work, but it's stress that does me. One area of my life, just one, has become incredibly stressful, & I need to deal with it. Don't want any clouds in my sky, them days should have long gone, it's meant to be downhill from here.

Biut it was a lovely llttle break, & being away from poker for a few days was no bad thing.

Thanks Rod.

Did you see that a nesting pair of Ospreys had been spotted in Cheddar Gorge a few days back? It was claimed these were the first Ospreys to nest in England for centuries, but a letter in today's Times suggsts they have nested in a place in Cumbria - Bassenthwaite Lake - for many years, & they even have a viewing platform. I'm becoming besotted with birds & bird-life, & I may well go up there & take a look. tikay the twitcher?

I have some lovely pictures to Post from a Falconry, when time permits. Well worth a gander.

I wonder if buzzards are becoming more widespread?  I've seen several lately.
