Not a bird watcher Tony, but grew up with breeding parrots and budgies, on a small scale. Always think they are very eloquent.

With impeccable timing (see Red's Diary) I spotted a sign similar to this one this morning. It did set me thinking - it was in Luton.

I spared myself that pleasure - I'm not a geek you know.

Just got one of those "look twice" texts in, from the usually inebriated Thewy, who's playing Day 1A at the Bristol GBPT. It reads.....

"Tom (Red-Dog) is on my table, I'm on the water, he on the red wine. wtf?"

wtf indeed. World's gone mad.

Seeing as Thewy runs like God in comps, he'll have turned his water into wine by the end of level 2.

A classic AndrewT Post.

Thewy was in "push-more" earlier than usual in Bristol yesterday, & shoved at least once a round for hours on end. He eventually Raised with Sevens, got Re-Raised, decided it was time to gamble, & Called for his Tourney against A-J. And lost.

He received counselling later, & remains traumatised that he could go in ahead & lose. Maybe he is, after all, mere flesh & bloodl?

"The Wonder of Woolies"........

...ran one of the most famous advertising slogans of all time. The wonder, in fact, is how long will they survive? They are due next year to celebrate 100 years since their first British Store was opened  - it's odds against they will still be here then, the end is nigh.

Their Share price, despite the occasional dead-cat bounce, has shuddered down to 9p. The Company has a net worth of £85 million. (Tescos, ruthlessly & superbly efficient, has a net worth of £300 billion).

The family silver - the freeholds of it's 800+ High Street Stores - were sold years ago. They rent most of their properties now, & that Rent equates to 10 per cent of their income. (Tesco, like Sainsbury, own the freeholds to most of their Stores. Freeholds sit on land, & no matter how inefficient you are, the value of prime land rises inexorably over time, as they've stopped making it).

I visited a Woolies recently, & it's a crying shame, so easily rectified - there was almost no merchandise on show. You can't sell what you ain't got. Snat, judging by his superb Diary, could sort them out in a few months.

Frank W Woolworth, by the way, was the father of Barbara Hutton, the famous "Woolworths heiress", & she's a story in her own right. At the age of 6, she discovered the body of her Mother who'd just committed suicide, & it sort of sent her off the rails for life. She married about 8 times, the most famous being to Cary Grant in the early forties, but she had a whole bunch of grandly-titled hubbies in between - Prince Alexis Mdivani, Count Kurt von Haugwitz-Reventlow, Prince Igor Troubetskoy, Porfirio Rubirosa, Baron Gottfried von Cramm, & the last, Prince Pierre Doan. That's some Hubby CV!

Anyway, Woolies are dead in the water, & I think that's rather a shame.

This is a rather quaint Woolies Website - but it probably says it all.

The pic of an old-style Woolies above looks "just right", wheras I never could get comfortable with their "new" image.

Ahh you went to Grassington. Walked around there last month. Such a lovely centre with shops and cafe's down the hill. Hope you went to the river where all the worn out lime stone is.

It's one of the few places I have been to were its like stepping back in time.

Yes, & I've still not Posted the rest of the Holiday Pics yet. Consider you may have been spared them, lack of time being what it is.....

Grassington was something else, & tea & cake was partaken of at a beautiful little cafe perched right above a little river, which was babbling away just below. A memory forever, that Cafe. Above the Cafe (the 'photo is in the Lappuie, not with me right now) is a sort of Foundation Stone for the Cafe - inscribed "TK".  The Town also has a famous butchers shop - proper butchers shop - which rejoices in the title of "Tony Kendall Butchers".

The Town Square seems to be unchanged from this beautiful pic. (Can anyone name those lovely cars?).

Sadly, time did not permit Eden Camp, but it will next time, which will be a longer holiday - much longer.
