I was so taken with that name - Ross Fronmette Ospovat Wells - that I googled it, but it came up a blank. Anyone know anything about him - or her?

His parents either had a sense of humour or hated their son.

I gotta go, I have some stuff to sort, & PTP at 7. I'll never catch up with this Diary, but I might die trying.

Before I depart, here's a curiosity.

This 'photo is NOT photo-shopped, or anyway messed about with. It's genuine.

Don't ask why I took it, I don't know. It was taken at Brighton GUKPT.

The tip of the brown shoe you can see is mine. The "giant" shoe belongs to Compo.

What size feet must he have? And what does this tell us?

Lol. I'm not very good (understatemnt) at filing/organising my photographs. That's Chili's fault, she's supposed to take care of these things.

One for the girls. This is Henrik Stenson, yesterday, in Miami, in the WGC-CA.

Henrik has lost more than his golf ball, as it happens - all his money was invested in Stanford. The grimmers are everywhere these days, it seems.

He has no spare money, now, but he does have a spare ball, apparently.

This drsss code woud never do at Royal Ormonde. Wollaton maybe, but not Omonde.

I think - I'm not sure - that Heathrow "reverse" the runways at 2pm every day, to alleviate noise disturbance to residents. Is this true? If so, it must be a neat bit of ATC juggling.

For approach and departure controllers I think it's quite simple. Whether they're landing on 27R or 27L there's no difference in the outbound radials the planes fly from Lambourne, Biggin, Ockham or Bovingdon to the point at which they turn to intercept the ILS. So in theory it's simply a matter of identifying which will be the first arrival to land at the alternative runway and telling them - it just means they have a slightly tighter (or slightly less tight) turn to intercept depending whether they're coming from the north or the south. For departures, the pilot will have a Standard instrument Departure route, via one or more beacons or points at fixed distances on radials from beacons, that takes him up to whichever airway he is heading for, and I don't think they're affected by whether he takes off from the southern or northern runway.

I gave Warren Lush the nickname "Lush the Gush", as it's his job to produce puff, PR guff, spammy stuff. A thankless task indeed. It's not meant to be rude, just a little fun, & I like him a lot. He & Compo have a special relationship, I think Compo worked with Warren's father, or somesuch, & they met up at Matchroom when we were filming there the other week.

Anyway, I just got an e-Mail from Warren - not spam, this was business - headed "Gush from Lush". It's amazing who reads this Diary. I'd better be careful what I say.

And Tighty, check your e-Mails, please. Wink

Finally, for the grammatical pedants. Why can we write "a mysterious hotel", but "a hotel" has to be "an hotel"?

I always wondered this. The answer is it doesn't have to be an

foud this in AskOxford:

The form an for the indefinite article is used before a spoken vowel sound, regardless of how the written word is spelt. If you say 'an otel' when speaking (which is now often regarded as distinctly old-fashioned), then it may be appropriate for you to write 'an hotel'; but most people say 'hotel' with a sounded 'h', and should write 'a hotel'.

By contrast, words such as 'honour', 'heir' or 'hour' in which the 'h' sound is dropped are written with 'an'. Americans who drop the 'h' in 'herb' may also prefer to write 'an herb', but in standard British pronunciation the 'h' is sounded, and 'a herb' is therefore correct in writing. Because 'European' is said with an initial 'y' sound, which counts as a consonantal sound in English speech, it is said (and written) with 'a' not 'an'. An abbreviation such as M.P., which is pronounced em pea, begins with a spoken vowel, and so it is 'an M.P.'

Many thanks - that sort of makes sense. It's always intrigued me.

"...distinctly old-fashioned..." eh? We can't have that, can we?

I'm grateful for the explanation. I once wrote a piece for a poker newspper, using "an hotel", & the sub-editor changed it, & wrote to me to point out my typo. He was Oxford educated. Wink

As a certified aeroplane geek, that's a breathtaking reply - thank you.

Radials, airways - the answer begs more questions the more I read it.

You seem very well infomed on all this - were you, or are you, involved with ATC?

I hope you are well, & had a good Cheltenham. Did you back Kauto?

The less said about last night, the better - what a nightmare! PTP went marvellous, but some stuff went off BTS in blonde, which took over a dozen PM's to unravel, & was still going back & forth at 3am.

I have a - sort of - day off today, but I need to drive down to London, groan, in readiness for working in Central London tomorrow (sunday).

So I'll find an - sorry, a -  Hotel somewhere convenient, so I can be in Leicester Square on Sunday lunchtime, as In-Poker are covering The Empire £1k Main Event. Then I stay over on Sunday night, too, as I'm in Feltham all day Monday, Blog writing, midday Vegas Telecon, a recording at 6pm, & the Live Show at 9pm, then stay over again.

I'll come back home on Tuesday, & my next Live Poker looks like Luton on Wednesday.

Have a good weekend.

Using 'an hotel' is just plain wrong.  It's never been correct English, and hopefully never will be.
