Does anyone have the picture editor Gimp. If so, how do you set it so that when you use the box icon to select a certain area of your picture, it forms a perfect square?

Mine is a perfect square.  But that is because someone else did it for me, who's not a, er, big poster - but if no white knight has come to your rescue by 7:30 tonight I can tell you without a doubt how to set it up.  And I might even pretend that I just 'remembered' how to do it.

If I'm understanding correctly what you want...

once you have selected the 'box tool', change the drop down menu to 'fixed aspect ratio' and set the height and width to the same value.

Perfect squares from then on.

The problem there is that I don't want a set size as the pictures I am using are different sizes themselves. What I want is for when you drag the corner of the box across your picture, for the box to remain a square as you move it. Then, after I have selected my area, I will scale down to the size I want. Unfortunately, if it's not an exact square, it distorts, which is a pain in the arse.

Does that make sense?

Hmmm, with mine if I set it to 100 x 100 (make sure it's in px not % also) I am able to adjust the size of the box, tiny to huge.

Hold SHIFT while dragging your box. Same as most programs, not just GIMP.
